Sales Cover Letter Examples: 6 Samples by Sales Role

A sales cover letter works when it opens with one number you moved, names the product or buyer you sold to, and asks for the meeting in the last line, the way a good sales email does. The constraint is that a sales manager reads your letter as a sample of your pitch: if it is vague, long or all about you, that is how they assume you sell. O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, describes the core sales representative job as "Sell goods for wholesalers or manufacturers to businesses or groups of individuals. Work requires substantial knowledge of items sold." The six cover letter examples below, checked in October 2026, cover entry level to sales manager. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Every sales cover letter says "I am a natural closer". Then it ends with "I look forward to hearing from you", which is the one sentence a closer would never write.
Entry level sales representative cover letter
With no sales job behind you, sell the jobs you did have. Waiting tables, retail and call work all involve persuading strangers, and a number from any of them beats a promise about your drive.

Entry level: graduate applying for a B2B sales representative role (197 words)
Dear Ms. Patel,
I am applying for the Sales Representative role at Northfield Office Supply. For two years I worked the floor at Voltline Electronics while finishing my business degree, and I was the associate my manager sent to customers who were "just looking". I sold the protection plan on more than one in four of my laptop sales, the highest rate in our store for three straight quarters.
What I learned there is that people do not buy a laptop. They buy the end of a problem, like a son who needs it for college on Monday. I ask about the Monday first and the specs second. I want to do the same with office managers who are tired of running out of toner the week of the board meeting.
I have read your product catalog and your reviews, and I noticed customers praise your next-day delivery but complain about reordering. I would like to talk about how I would use that in my first territory.
Can we set up 20 minutes next week? I am free any morning, and I will bring the sales log I kept at Voltline Electronics.
Sincerely, Jordan Ellis (555) 214-8830
Sales development representative cover letter
SDR hiring managers screen for activity and resilience. Give them the volume you can sustain and the ratio you got from it, because those are the numbers they will hold you to.

Entry level: SDR applying to a software company (176 words)
Dear Mr. Okafor,
I am applying for the Sales Development Representative opening on your mid-market team. In my current role as a customer service representative at Lumen Telecom, I handle around 60 inbound calls a day, and since January I have also been running the team's outbound win-back list: 40 calls a day to customers who cancelled in the last six months.
From that list I have booked 31 retention meetings for our account managers, and 18 of those customers came back. I keep my own tracker of every call, so I know which opening line gets someone to stay on the phone past ten seconds. It is the one that names their old plan.
Your company sells to the same small business owners I speak to every day. I know their objections, mostly price and switching effort, and I know which ones are really a request for a call back next month.
I would like to show you my tracker in an interview. I can start with two weeks' notice.
Best regards, Maya Chen maya.chen@example.com
Account executive cover letter
Mid-level sales candidates lead with quota attainment, deal size and cycle length. Pick the one deal that looks most like the deals at the company you are applying to, and tell it in three sentences.

Mid level: account executive moving to a larger company (175 words)
Dear Ms. Rivera,
I am applying for the Account Executive role on your healthcare team. I have spent four years selling scheduling software to clinics and small hospital groups at CareSlot, and I finished last year at 118 percent of a 900,000 dollar quota, second of fourteen reps.
The deal I am proudest of is a seven-clinic dermatology group that had already chosen a competitor. I asked for one meeting with their front desk leads instead of the owner, learned their real problem was no-shows on Monday mornings, and built the proposal around that. We signed a three-year contract eight weeks later.
Your platform sells to larger systems with longer cycles, and I have prepared for that. Over the last year I ran two deals with procurement committees and security reviews, and I have completed MEDDICC training, which I see your team uses.
I would like to talk about how my pipeline habits would fit a six-month sales cycle. I am available for a call any afternoon this week.

Retail sales associate cover letter
Retail managers hire for reliability and the ability to sell on the floor. O*NET's summary of the retail salesperson role is short: "Sell merchandise, such as furniture, motor vehicles, appliances, or apparel to consumers." Show that you do exactly that, and that you turn up.

Entry level: retail sales associate for a furniture store (157 words)
Dear Store Manager,
I am applying for the Sales Associate position at Hartwell Furniture. I have worked at Brightway Home for 18 months, mostly in home goods, and I have not missed a scheduled shift. My department manager asks me to cover the weekend floor because I can walk a customer from a lamp to a full room.
Last spring a couple came in for a rug and left with a rug, a coffee table and two side tables, because I asked what the room looked like and showed them a photo of our display. I like that part of the job most: helping someone picture the finished thing.
Furniture is a bigger decision than anything I sell now, and I would like to learn the financing and delivery side properly. I am available evenings and weekends.
Thank you for reading. I would welcome the chance to meet you in the store.
Sincerely, Aaliyah Moore (555) 772-0418
Career change into sales cover letter
Career changers win by translating. A nurse, a teacher or a server already persuades people every day. Name the moment you did, and connect it to the buyer you will now be selling to.

Mid level: teacher moving into education technology sales (169 words)
Dear Mr. Lindqvist,
I am applying for the Account Executive role selling to school districts. I have taught middle school math for seven years, and for the last two I have been the teacher my district sends to pilot new software. I have sat on the buyer side of your demo three times.
Last year I persuaded our principal and the district technology director to adopt an adaptive practice tool after two other teachers had tried and failed. I did it by running a six-week trial with my own classes, tracking homework completion, and presenting the results at a department meeting. The district bought licenses for all four middle schools.
I know how a curriculum director decides, who signs the purchase order, and why a demo that runs past 3:15 loses every teacher in the room. I am finishing a sales fundamentals course this month.
I would like to meet and talk about your district territories. I am free after school any day next week.
Sincerely, Rachel Kim rachel.kim@example.com
Sales manager cover letter
A sales manager is hired to build a team that hits a number without them on the call. O*NET lists the sales manager job as including "Coordinate sales distribution by establishing sales territories, quotas, and goals and establish training programs for sales representatives." Write about your team's results, how you hired and coached, and what you changed. For a first step into leading people, a shift or team lead role, our application letter for a supervisor position has six worked letters.

Senior: sales manager applying to lead a regional team (179 words)
Dear Ms. Harper,
I am applying for the Regional Sales Manager role for the Southeast. For the past five years I have led a team of nine field reps at Corvane Industrial, selling packaging equipment to food manufacturers, and the team has hit its annual target four times out of five.
When I took over, two reps carried most of the number and the rest were waiting for leads. I rebuilt the territories around customer size instead of geography, introduced a weekly pipeline review, and started joining every rep on one customer visit a month. Within a year, seven of the nine were at or above quota, and I have promoted two of them since.
I have also hired eleven reps, and I hire for curiosity over confidence. The best questions in an interview usually come from the person who will ask the best questions in a customer's plant.
Your expansion into the Carolinas is the kind of build I enjoy. I would like to talk about my first 90 days in the role.
Sincerely, Marcus Webb (555) 640-2275
How to write a sales cover letter
Use the same four moves in every sales cover letter, whatever the level:
- Open with a number: quota percentage, conversion rate, calls a day, deals closed, or a rate from a non-sales job. One number, stated plainly.
- Tell one deal or one customer: the problem the buyer had, what you asked, and how it closed. Three sentences.
- Show you researched them: one detail about their product, buyers or market that you could only know by looking.
- Ask for the meeting: a specific ask with a time. A sales letter that does not close is the weakest sample you could send.
Keep it under 250 words. A sales leader who has to scroll will assume your emails are the same length. If you are new to sales, our entry level sales guide covers how to get the first role, and the sales representative resume and sales manager resume pages show the resume that goes behind the letter. For retail, the retail sales associate cover letter has annotated versions. For the general rules on layout and length, read how to write a cover letter, and for tighter versions see short cover letter examples.
Sample sales cover letter phrases to cut
These lines appear in almost every sales cover letter and tell the reader nothing:
- "I am a natural closer." Show the close instead.
- "I am a people person." Every candidate is.
- "I thrive in a fast-paced environment." Give your daily call or meeting volume.
- "I look forward to hearing from you." Ask for the meeting.
- "I have excellent communication skills." The letter is the test of that.
When I wrote job adverts for my own company, I knew exactly which three things I needed. The letters that got a call named those three things, in my order, with a number next to each.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good cover letter example for sales?
A good sales cover letter opens with one result you achieved, such as quota attainment or a conversion rate, tells one short customer story, shows you researched the company, and ends by asking for a meeting at a specific time. It stays under 250 words, because the letter is read as a sample of how you sell.
How do I write a sales cover letter with no experience?
Use the selling you already did in retail, hospitality, customer service or fundraising. Give one number, such as add-on sales or calls handled a day, and one story of persuading a customer. Then show you know the company's product and buyers, and ask for an interview. Hiring managers for entry level roles hire for effort and curiosity.
How long should a sales cover letter be?
Under 250 words, in three or four short paragraphs. Sales managers read cover letters as samples of your prospecting emails, so a long letter suggests long emails. Lead with your strongest number, keep one story, and end with a direct ask for a meeting rather than a polite sign-off.
What should a sales manager cover letter include?
Your team size, the target the team carried and how often it was hit, one change you made to how the team sold, and your record of hiring and promoting reps. Leave personal deal stories out unless they show how you coach. The reader is hiring someone to build a team, not to close the deals personally.
Should I put my quota numbers in a sales cover letter?
Yes, if you can share them. Quota attainment, rank on the team and average deal size are the numbers sales leaders check first. Use percentages or rank if dollar figures are confidential, and make sure the same numbers appear on your resume so the two documents tell one story.
