Sales keywords for a resume are the terms hiring managers and applicant tracking systems scan for: prospecting, cold calling, pipeline management, quota attainment, closing, negotiation, CRM and account management. The one constraint is the number beside the word, because a sales keyword without a figure reads like a sales pitch without a price. O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, lists this among the sales representative tasks: "Contact regular and prospective customers to demonstrate products, explain product features, and solicit orders." Below are 48 keywords in six groups and six complete sales resumes, SDR to director. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Every sales resume in the pile says "consistently exceeded quota." Not one says by how much. The person reading it sells for a living, and he knows exactly what a missing number means.
A sales resume with the keywords in place
This is a mid-level account executive's experience section. Watch where the keywords sit: next to a figure, a stage of the deal or a tool.

Mid level: account executive, B2B software (100 words)
Account Executive, Fieldline (field service software), Denver, CO | 2022 to present
- Closed $1.1M in new business in 2025 against a $900K quota, 122% quota attainment - Run the full sales cycle from discovery call to signed contract for HVAC and plumbing companies with 20 to 200 technicians - Build my own pipeline through outbound prospecting and inbound leads, holding 3x pipeline coverage every quarter - Lead product demos and negotiate multi-year terms with owners and operations managers - Keep every opportunity and forecast current in Salesforce; forecast landed within 10% for six straight quarters
Twelve keywords, and none of them is floating in a list. The software finds each one, and so does the sales manager.
48 sales keywords, grouped by what they prove
Pick the terms that appear in the posting and that you could defend for two minutes in an interview. Open each bullet with one of the resume action verbs and put the keyword in the middle, with the result at the end.

O*NET's description of the same job backs up the prospecting group almost word for word. One listed task is to "Identify prospective customers by using business directories, following leads from existing clients, participating in organizations and clubs, and attending trade shows and conferences." Found customers at trade shows or through referrals? Say so in a bullet.
Example 2: Sales development representative, entry level
An SDR resume is judged on activity and meetings booked, because closing is not the job yet. The keywords come from prospecting and qualification.

Entry level: sales development representative, first sales role (125 words)
Jordan Ellis | Charlotte, NC | jordan.ellis@email.com | linkedin.com/in/jordanellis
Sales Development Representative, Brightdesk (HR software), Charlotte, NC | 2025 to present - Make 60 cold calls and send 40 personalized cold emails a day to HR leaders at companies with 50 to 500 staff - Booked 41 qualified meetings for two account executives in my first two quarters - Qualify inbound demo requests with a five-question needs analysis before handing off - Run outbound sequences in Outreach and research accounts in LinkedIn Sales Navigator

Education B.A. Communication, UNC Charlotte | 2025
Example 3: Retail sales associate
Retail resumes use the same vocabulary at a smaller scale, with sales targets and upselling ahead of CRM names.

Entry level: retail sales associate, furniture store (88 words)
Sales Associate, Oakline Home Furnishings, Columbus, OH | 2023 to present - Met or beat monthly sales targets in 17 of 20 months, selling sofas, mattresses and dining sets - Cross-sell delivery, fabric protection and warranties on most large orders - Handle customer objections on price by walking buyers through financing and frame construction - Follow up with past customers by phone, which brings in repeat business and referrals - Process sales, returns and special orders at the point of sale and keep the floor displays current
Example 4: Inside sales representative
Inside sales reps close over the phone and on video, so tools and conversion numbers carry the page.

Mid level: inside sales representative, industrial supplies (96 words)
Inside Sales Representative, Midwest Fastener Supply, Milwaukee, WI | 2021 to present - Manage a territory of 180 accounts across Wisconsin and Minnesota by phone, email and video - Grew territory revenue 18% in 2024 by reaching dormant accounts with a reorder program - Turn about one in four quotes into orders, tracked in HubSpot, against a team conversion rate near one in five - Build quotes and proposals for bulk orders and negotiate volume pricing within approved margins - Work with the outside sales team on key accounts that need a site visit
Example 5: B2B sales manager
At manager level the keywords move from your own deals to the team's numbers, hiring and coaching.

Senior: B2B sales manager, logistics (91 words)
Regional Sales Manager, Crossdock Freight, Atlanta, GA | 2020 to present - Lead eight account executives across the Southeast; team hit annual quota in four of five years - Hired five of the eight and built a 30-day onboarding plan with call reviews in Gong - Run weekly pipeline reviews and the monthly sales forecast for the VP of Sales - Coach reps on discovery and objection handling, with role-play on recorded calls - Personally closed the region's two largest contracts, a grocery distributor and a building supply chain
Example 6: Sales director, summary and experience
Director resumes need strategy keywords: go-to-market, revenue plans and sales operations.

Senior: sales director, medical devices (110 words)
Summary Sales director with 14 years in medical device sales, leading regional teams that sell to hospitals and surgery centers. Built the sales strategy and annual revenue plan for a $40M territory and led a go-to-market launch for a new surgical product.
Director of Sales, East Region, Corvent Medical, Boston, MA | 2019 to present - Own the revenue plan, territory design and compensation plan for 22 sellers and 3 managers - Led the go-to-market launch of a surgical stapler with marketing and clinical education - Introduced MEDDIC qualification and a shared forecasting process in Salesforce - Built strategic accounts program for the region's 12 largest hospital systems
How to use sales keywords without sounding like a brochure
O*NET defines the core sales skill, persuasion in plain terms, as "Convincing others to buy merchandise/goods or to otherwise change their minds or actions." Your resume is the first sale, and only the proven features count.
- Copy the posting's exact terms. If the ad says "pipeline management," do not write "funnel work." The software and the reader both match the literal phrase. Our page on ATS keywords in real job ads shows how that matching works.
- Pair every keyword with a number. Quota, revenue, accounts, meetings, deal size. If you cannot share a dollar figure, use a percentage or a rank.
- Keep soft-skill words out of the skills list. "Persuasive" and "driven" belong in the bullets as results, not as labels.
NACE describes communication, one of its career readiness competencies, as the ability to "Clearly and effectively exchange information, ideas, facts, and perspectives with persons inside and outside of an organization." In sales that is a demo or a renewal call, so write about the call.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics keeps a sales occupations overview worth reading for the duties of the exact title you want. For more on the skills side, see our salesman resume skills page, and if this is your first sales job, start with entry-level sales. The same method works for customer service resume keywords, financial analyst keywords and product management keywords.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best sales keywords for a resume?
The strongest are quota attainment, pipeline management, prospecting, cold calling, closing, negotiation, account management, revenue growth and the CRM you use, such as Salesforce or HubSpot. The best list for you is the one in the posting. Use those terms, and attach a number to each one so the claim can be checked.
Where should sales keywords go on a resume?
Put the important ones in your summary and in the experience bullets, where they sit next to results. Repeat tools and methods once in a short skills section. Applicant tracking systems read the whole page, and a sales manager trusts a keyword far more when it sits beside quota or revenue figures.
What if I cannot share my sales numbers?
Use relative figures instead of dollars: percent of quota, rank on the team, growth over last year or number of accounts managed. A line such as "ranked second of nine reps for new business" proves the keyword without exposing confidential revenue. Leaving numbers out entirely is the weakest choice.
How many keywords should a sales resume include?
There is no fixed count. Cover the main requirements in the posting, usually ten to fifteen terms, and make sure each appears at least once in context. Repeating the same keyword five times does not help a human reader, and it makes a sales resume read like a keyword list.
What sales skills keywords work for an entry-level resume?
Cold calling, prospecting, lead qualification, customer service, upselling, CRM basics and communication are the usual core. Pull proof from retail, serving or call center jobs, where you already sold, upsold or handled objections. One bullet with a check average or a sales target says more than a list of traits.
