Business development resume keywords are the terms a hiring team or an applicant tracking system looks for: pipeline, lead generation, partnerships, new markets, proposals, negotiation, revenue growth, CRM and the deals you closed. The one constraint is the figure, because business development is judged on what it added, and a keyword without a number reads like an invitation to a meeting. O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, lists this among a sales manager's tasks, the nearest official match: "Monitor customer preferences to determine focus of sales efforts." Below are 48 keywords in six groups and six complete resumes, development representative to director. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Business development is the job title that means "sales, but with lunches". The resume has to prove the lunches turned into contracts.

A business development resume with the keywords in place

Now the terms inside real deals. A mid-level business development manager at a logistics company.

O*NET adds this task to the same occupation: "Direct and coordinate activities involving sales of manufactured products, services, commodities, real estate, or other subjects of sale." Business development postings borrow that language, then add the words partnership and market, which is why those two show up so often in the groups above.

Example 2: Business development representative, entry level

An entry-level resume has few titles. The keywords come from prospecting volume, tools and early wins.

Example 5: Career changer into business development

How to use business development keywords without stuffing

Harvard's career services office wants resume language that is "Fact-based (quantify and qualify)". In business development the figures are deals, meetings, revenue and partners.

MIT's career office says to "Quantify if you can" in its resume guide. In business development, that is rarely hard: deals, meetings, revenue and partners are all countable.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best keywords for a business development resume?

The most common are pipeline development, lead generation, outbound prospecting, proposals, negotiation, strategic partnerships, market expansion, revenue growth, forecasting and CRM, plus tools such as Salesforce and LinkedIn Sales Navigator. Use the ones in the posting, each inside a bullet that shows a deal or a number.

What is the difference between sales and business development keywords?

Sales keywords centre on closing, quota and accounts. Business development keywords centre on creating the opportunity: pipeline, partnerships, new markets, proposals and strategy. The two overlap in negotiation and CRM, so check the posting and lean towards whichever list its first paragraph uses.

Where do business development keywords go on a resume?

Place the main terms in the summary and in the experience bullets beside a deal size or a count, then list tools in a short skills section. Software reads the full document, and a sales leader trusts a term more when a signed contract or a meeting number sits next to it.

How many keywords should a business development resume have?

Cover the main requirements in the posting, usually ten to fifteen terms, each used once or twice in context. Repeating a term many times does not help a sales leader, and it makes a business development resume read like a script.
