Wendy's Interview Questions: Crew and Manager Answers

Wendy's interview questions for crew roles come down to four things: when you can work, how you treat customers, how you cope when the line is out the door, and whether you pull your weight on a team. Shift manager interviews add questions about running a shift, handling no-shows and keeping the restaurant clean and safe. The one constraint is availability: a great answer to everything else cannot fix a schedule that does not fit the restaurant's hours, so know yours before you walk in. Job duties below are quoted from O*NET and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the page has eight full sample answers. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

You are about to be interviewed at a table near the window by someone holding a clipboard and, quite possibly, a Frosty. They have done this many times this month. Your job is to make the next fifteen minutes easy for them.

Why do you want to work at Wendy's?

This is almost always the first question. The weak answer is "I need a job", which is true for everyone in the room, including the manager. A better answer connects something real about you to something real about the restaurant.

Wendy's own values page says that "Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy's restaurant with an unwavering commitment to serve fresh food, at a fair price, in a comfortable atmosphere." You do not need to quote it, but if you mention fresh food or a clean, friendly restaurant, you are speaking their language.

Question: Why do you want to work at Wendy's?

Answer: I want my first job to be somewhere busy where I learn fast, and I have been coming to this Wendy's with my family for years. The staff here are quick but they still say hi, and that is the kind of place I want to work.

I am also saving for a car, so I want steady hours I can count on. I play basketball at school, so I am used to practice schedules, showing up on time and being told what to do better by a coach. I think that carries over to working a shift.

What does a Wendy's crew member actually do?

Knowing the job makes every answer sharper. O*NET OnLine lists the tasks of fast food and counter workers, including "Accept payment from customers, and make change as necessary," "Communicate with customers regarding orders, comments, and complaints," and "Clean and organize eating, service, and kitchen areas."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics adds two points that matter in the interview. First, these workers "typically have no requirements for formal education or work experience to enter the occupation. They learn their skills on the job." Second, "work shifts often include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays." So the manager is not testing experience. They are testing reliability, attitude and availability.

Availability questions at a Wendy's interview

Expect "What is your availability?", "Can you work weekends?" and "Can you close?" Answer with specific days and times, and do not promise hours you cannot keep.

Complete Entry level: student availability example, 94 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Entry level: student availability (94 words)

Question: What is your availability?

Answer: During the school year I can work Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4 until close, and all day Saturday. Sundays I have church in the morning, so I can start at noon. I cannot work Tuesdays because of team practice, but that ends in March and then Tuesdays are open.

In summer I am free almost every day and I would like as many hours as you can give me. If my schedule ever changes, I will tell you at least two weeks ahead so you can plan.

The last sentence is what managers remember. A clear, honest schedule beats a vague "I'm flexible" that falls apart in week two.

Customer service questions

These questions check how you speak to people when things go wrong. The answer that works is short: stay calm, listen, fix what you can, and get a manager for what you cannot.

Entry level: an angry customer (117 words)

Question: A customer says their order is wrong and they are getting loud. What do you do?

Answer: First I would stay calm and apologize, because even if it was not my mistake, they are having a bad experience at our restaurant. I would ask what was wrong and repeat it back so they know I heard them.

If it is something I can fix, like a missing item or the wrong drink, I would fix it right away. If they want a refund or it is getting out of hand, I would get the manager on shift instead of arguing. At my last job at a movie theater concession stand, that approach worked almost every time.

If you have never had a job, use school, sports or volunteering. The situational interview questions page has more of these "what would you do" questions with full answers.

Questions about rush hours and speed

Lunch and late night rushes are where a restaurant is won or lost. The manager wants to hear that you stay accurate under pressure and help where you are needed.

Mid level: experienced crew member, handling a rush (121 words)

Question: How do you handle it when the restaurant gets really busy?

Answer: I focus on one order at a time and keep talking to the team. At the burger place I worked at for a year, I was usually on drive-thru at lunch. When the line backed up, I would let the kitchen know what was coming before the screen showed it, and I would repeat every order back to the customer so we did not have to remake anything.

If I had a spare second, I restocked cups and sauces, because running out in the middle of a rush slows everyone down. I actually like busy shifts. The time goes faster and you can see the team working together.

Teamwork questions

A typical version: "Tell me about a time you worked with someone who was not doing their share." Do not trash the coworker. Show that you kept the work moving and dealt with it fairly. For "tell me about a time" questions, the STAR interview questions guide shows how to keep the story short.

Mid level: a coworker not pulling their weight (110 words)

Question: What would you do if a coworker kept leaving their work for you?

Answer: I would talk to them first, privately, not in front of customers. Something like, "Hey, I noticed the fry station has been left for me a few times. Can we split the closing tasks?" Most of the time people just did not realize.

If it kept happening, I would tell the shift manager, but I would make it about the work, not about the person. At my last job we had a closing checklist with names next to each task, and that solved most of these problems because everyone could see who had done what.

Wendy's shift manager interview questions

Shift manager candidates get the crew questions plus questions about running people, cash and standards. Use numbers where you have them: team size, sales, speed, audit scores.

Complete Senior level: shift manager, a no-show at lunch example, 133 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Senior level: shift manager, a no-show at lunch (133 words)

Question: Two crew members call out before the lunch rush. What do you do?

Answer: First I call the people on my list who have said they want extra hours, because one call often fixes it. While I wait, I rework the positions: I put my strongest person on drive-thru, because that is where most of our lunch sales come through, and I jump onto the front counter myself.

I tell the team the plan in one sentence so nobody is guessing. After the rush I write up what happened for the general manager and check whether the two call-outs follow a pattern. At my current restaurant I ran shifts of eight to ten people for two years, and the first five minutes of a short-staffed shift decide how the whole lunch goes.

Complete Senior level: shift manager, food safety and cleanliness example, 118 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Senior level: shift manager, food safety and cleanliness (118 words)

Question: How do you make sure the restaurant stays clean and food stays safe during your shift?

Answer: I use the checklists every shift and I walk the restaurant myself at set times, not only when it looks dirty. Temperatures get checked and logged on schedule, and I sign off on them.

The habit I am proudest of is teaching new crew why we do things, not only what to do. When someone understands that holding times are about keeping customers from getting sick, they follow them even when I am not watching. On my last two inspections we had no critical violations, and I give the crew credit for that because they were the ones doing it.

How to prepare for a Wendy's interview

If they ask for a resume, the fast food worker resume page shows a one page version built for crew roles, and the restaurant skills resume guide lists the skills worth naming. Applying for a shift lead role? The fast food manager resume shows how to put team size and sales on the page.

A Wendy's interview answer for a career changer

Complete Career changer: returning to work after time at home example, 101 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Career changer: returning to work after time at home (101 words)

Question: Tell me about yourself.

Answer: I have spent the last six years at home raising my two kids, and they are both in school full time now, so I am ready to go back to work during school hours. Before that I worked three years as a cashier at a grocery store, where I handled a register, opened the store on weekends and trained new cashiers.

Running a house with two small kids taught me to stay calm when five things happen at once, which I think is useful at lunch rush. I can work weekdays from 8:30 to 2:30.

Frequently asked questions

What questions do they ask at a Wendy's interview?

Most Wendy's interview questions cover why you want the job, your availability, how you would handle an upset customer, how you work during a rush and how you get along with coworkers. Shift manager interviews add questions about running a shift, covering call-outs, handling cash and keeping food safety standards. Prepare short, honest answers with one real example each.

How old do you have to be to work at Wendy's?

Federal law sets 14 as the minimum age for most non-farm jobs, and the Department of Labor limits 14 and 15 year olds to no more than 3 hours on a school day and 18 hours in a school week. Each restaurant and state can set stricter rules, so ask the location you are applying to.

What should I wear to a Wendy's interview?

Wear clean, neat, simple clothes, such as dark pants or jeans without holes and a plain shirt or polo. Avoid strong perfume and anything you would worry about getting dirty. You are not expected to wear a suit. Looking tidy tells the manager you will take the uniform and hygiene rules seriously.

Is a Wendy's interview hard?

Usually not. The questions are about your attitude, reliability and availability rather than experience, since the Bureau of Labor Statistics says most fast food workers learn their skills on the job. Answer honestly, give one real example per question, show up a few minutes early and know your schedule, and you will be in a strong position.

Do I need experience to work at Wendy's?

No. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says food and beverage serving workers typically need no formal education or work experience to start. Many crew members are in their first job. Use examples from school, sports, volunteering or family responsibilities to show you are dependable, friendly and able to follow instructions, which is what the manager wants.
