How Many Jobs Should Be on a Resume: 6 Real Examples
By CVBooster Team · Published · Updated
6 min read
List the jobs that prove you can do the one you are applying for: for most people that is three to five, newest first, and for a first-job applicant it can be one or two. There is no legal or technical limit. The number is a side effect of one rule, relevance, and of a second one, space: if a job does not help this application, it loses its place to one that does. Below are six complete work history sections, from a student with two jobs to a senior manager who cut a 14-job history to four, and a quick test for every job you are unsure about.
You are not being asked for a confession. A resume is not a court record of every shift you ever worked, and no one will check that the 2011 summer at the car wash is still in your file.
The short rule by career stage
This is our rule of thumb, not an official number.
- First job or student: one to three entries, and include internships, volunteering and projects.
- Early career (up to about 5 years): two to four jobs.
- Mid career: three to five jobs, mostly from the last 10 to 15 years.
- Senior: four to six roles, with the older ones compressed to a line each.
- Federal and some public sector jobs: read the posting. If it asks for a complete history, give a complete history.
Example 1: a student with two real jobs
Everything is listed because there is not much to cut.

What the career offices say
MIT's career office says to treat the resume as a targeted document, in its resume guide: "When applying for a job you want to build a resume that targets a specific position or employer." Keep the master list for yourself. Send the short version.
The same guide adds that "Look at the skills required for the position and select experiences where you demonstrated those skills." That is the selection method: list the skills in the posting, then choose the jobs that show them.
Harvard's career services lists the order inside each section in its resume guide: "Within headings, list information in reverse chronological order (most recent first)". Berkeley's career center, in its resume advice, tells applicants to "Identify relevant skill areas" first. All three start with the target job, not with your history.

A test for every job you are unsure about
Ask these questions in order. Stop at the first yes.
- Does the posting ask for something this job shows? Keep it.
- Is it within the last 10 to 15 years? Keep it if it adds anything, and cut it if it repeats a stronger job.
- Would a gap in time look strange without it? Keep it with one line, or explain the gap in your summary.
- Does it show the title or level you are aiming for? Keep it.
- None of the above? Cut it, or move it to an Earlier experience line.
For how to format dates and entries, see employment history on a resume. If a gap worries you, the guide to employment gaps covers the wording. For length, see resume length. To see a full layout, open the resume examples.
What to cut first
- Jobs older than 15 years that do not add a new skill.
- Short roles under a few months that do not fit the story (unless they close a gap).
- Duplicate roles where you did the same work at two employers. Keep the stronger one.
- Unrelated side jobs once you have enough relevant ones.
- Bullets on old jobs. Give them one line, or none.
Frequently asked questions
How many jobs should I list on my resume?
Three to five relevant jobs for most people, newest first. Students and first-job applicants can list one or two. Senior applicants can list more but should keep the older roles short.
How far back should a resume go?
About 10 to 15 years is a sensible limit for most jobs. Go back further only when an older job is directly relevant, or when the application says it needs a complete history.
Should I list every job I have ever had?
No, unless the application asks for it. Pick the jobs that prove you can do the one on offer, and leave the rest for the interview.
Is it okay to leave jobs off a resume?
Yes. A resume is a selection, not a record. Leaving off a job that is old, short or unrelated is normal. Do not change dates or titles, and do not hide anything the application form asks for.
What if I have only had one job?
List it in full, with three to five bullets, and add internships, volunteering, school projects and relevant coursework to fill out the picture.
