Artistic Director Resume: 5 Examples and What to Include

An artistic director resume has to prove two careers at once: the art you have made and chosen, and the organization you have kept alive while making it. Boards and search committees hire the second as much as the first. The one constraint is length: a long list of every production you have directed buries the seasons, budgets, audiences and funding that a board reads for. O*NET groups the role with producers and directors, quoted below. Five complete examples follow, from artistic associate to the head of a dance company. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Your production history is four pages long and lovingly formatted. The board chair reads the first line, then flips to find the word "budget". It is on page three, under a revival of Our Town from 2014.

What an artistic director resume needs to show

The O*NET profile for producers and directors lists Artistic Director among its job titles and describes the creative side: "Responsible for creative decisions, such as interpretation of script, choice of actors or guests, set design, sound, special effects, and choreography." For an artistic director, that is only half the job. You also plan seasons, hire directors and designers, work with the managing director on the budget, speak to donors and represent the company in the community.

So the first half of page one should answer five questions:

Here is a resume for the first step up: an artistic associate applying to be associate artistic director.

Artistic director vs creative director: different resumes

Search results mix the two titles, but they are different jobs. A creative director runs the creative output of an agency or a brand: campaigns, design, video. An artistic director leads a performing arts organization's artistic program, usually a nonprofit with a board. If you have worked in both worlds, say which one this resume is for in the headline and the summary, and move the other to a short section further down. Our producer resume sample and film industry resume cover the screen side of the same skills.

At director level the summary should read like a board briefing: size of the company, the budget, the direction you set and what changed while you led it. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes how people reach these roles: "Producers and directors typically need a bachelor’s degree." The degree is the least interesting line on your resume by then, so it goes last.

Funding belongs on the resume

Almost every artistic director works inside a funding cycle, and boards want to see that you understand it. Name the grants and partnerships you helped win, and your part in them: the artistic narrative, the program design, the donor event. The National Endowment for the Arts grants page describes its main program: "Grants for Arts Projects (GAP) is our principal grants category, providing project-based funding for organizations." If your company received one while you led the program, it belongs in your experience bullets.

Frequently asked questions

What should be on an artistic director resume?

A summary naming the type and size of company you lead or want to lead, your current role with seasons programmed, premieres, budget and audience results, earlier artistic roles, funding and partnerships you helped secure, a short selected credits list, education and board or panel service. Keep the full production history for an appendix.

How long should an artistic director resume be?

Two pages for most experienced candidates, one for associates and artistic associates. Search committees read many applications, so the first page must carry your current role, the company's size and your results. A complete directing or choreography list can go in an attachment or on your website.

What skills does an artistic director need on a resume?

Season planning, directing or choreography, casting, hiring and leading artists, new work development, budget management with the managing director, grant and donor support, community partnerships and public speaking. Show each one in a bullet with a result instead of listing them in a skills box.

How do I write an artistic director resume with no director title?

Use the leadership you already have: programming a reading series, running a festival, leading a youth program, founding a small company or acting as associate. Describe seasons, artists and budgets you were responsible for, and apply first for associate artistic director or artistic director roles at smaller organizations.

Is an artistic director the same as a creative director?

No. An artistic director leads the artistic program of a performing arts organization, usually a nonprofit with a board. A creative director leads creative work in an agency, studio or brand. The skills overlap, but the resume should use the language of the field you are applying to.
