Retail Resume Keywords: 48 Terms and 6 Resume Examples

Retail resume keywords are the terms a store manager or an applicant tracking system scans for: customer service, sales, upselling, cash handling, point of sale, inventory, merchandising, loss prevention, opening and closing, and the numbers that go with them. The one constraint is the figure beside the word, because a retail keyword without a number reads like a name tag. O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, lists this among a retail salesperson's tasks: "Greet customers and ascertain what each customer wants or needs." Below are 48 keywords in six groups and six complete resumes, cashier to store manager. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

A retail manager reads a pile of "friendly, hardworking and reliable" in about the time it takes a customer to find the fitting rooms. What they hunt for is the opposite: a number, a shift, a till.

A retail resume with the keywords in place

Now the terms inside real shifts. A mid-level sales associate at a home goods store.

Mid level: Sales associate, home goods retailer (107 words)

Sales Associate, Hearth and Home, Raleigh, NC | 2022 to present

- Deliver customer service on a busy floor, greeting every customer within a minute and recommending products by need rather than price - Averaged $2,400 a shift in sales and finished above the store's weekly sales goal in 31 of 52 weeks - Handle cash and point of sale transactions, balancing the till at close with no overage or shortage logged in the last year - Restock and merchandise two aisles, rebuilding the seasonal display each month using the planogram - Trained six new hires on the register, returns policy and loss prevention steps

Thirteen keywords, each tied to a till, a shift or a display.

48 retail keywords, in six groups

Take the terms from the posting and keep the ones you can prove at a counter or on a floor. Start each bullet with an action verb from our resume action verbs list, and put the term beside the number it earned.

Team and leadership (8)

O*NET's retail salesperson entry also includes "Maintain knowledge of current sales and promotions, policies regarding payment and exchanges, and security practices." That one line contains four of the keywords above, which is why product knowledge, returns and loss prevention show up so often in postings.

Example 2: Cashier and sales associate, entry level

An entry-level retail resume has few titles. The keywords come from a first job, a seasonal role or a school store.

Complete Entry level: Cashier, first retail job example, 146 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Example 3: Visual merchandiser

Merchandising resumes are screened for display and planogram terms. Photos belong in a portfolio link, not the resume, so the bullets carry the evidence.

Example 5: Store manager

Store manager resumes move to P&L, labor and people. Use the numbers a district manager reads.

Example 6: Retail summary and skills section

When the posting is keyword-heavy, the summary and skills block carry the exact phrases. Keep the summary to three lines and the skills to a single block.

Mid level: Summary and skills section for a retail associate, complete example, 62 words

How to use retail keywords without stuffing

Harvard's career services office says resume language should be "Fact-based (quantify and qualify)". Retail makes that easy, because tills, shifts and sales goals all produce numbers.

MIT's career office adds in its resume guide that "Employers may use keyword scanning on resumes, so know what words are relevant to the industry and position and ensure they appear in your resume." Retail postings are short and plain, so the match is easy to do by hand.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best keywords for a retail resume?

The most common are customer service, sales, upselling, cash handling, point of sale, inventory, merchandising, loss prevention, opening and closing, and team training. Use the ones in the posting, each inside a bullet that shows a number, such as transactions a shift or sales above goal.

What retail keywords should a cashier use?

Cashiers should use point of sale, cash handling, balancing the till, credit card processing, customer service, bagging, returns and loyalty program. Add one count for each, such as transactions per shift or the months you went without a variance, so the keyword is backed by something a manager can check.

Where do retail keywords go on a resume?

Put the main terms in your summary and in the experience bullets, next to a number such as transactions per shift or sales above goal, then list systems and certifications in a short skills section. Software reads the whole file, and a store manager trusts a number more than an adjective.

How many retail keywords should I include?

Cover the main requirements in the posting, usually eight to twelve terms, each used once or twice in context. Repeating a term many times does not help a store manager, and it makes a short retail resume feel padded instead of showing the shifts and sales behind it.
