A customer service job description for a resume is the duties of the role turned into short bullets that say how many, how fast and with what result. Copying the employer's job description word for word is the usual mistake. Below are the standard duties in plain language and six complete resumes that use them, from a first call centre job to a team lead, checked in November 2026.
A job description says what the company hoped someone would do. A resume bullet says what you did. The gap between the two is where interviews come from.
Example 1: a first customer service job
Start with the real daily work: how many contacts, which channels, what you fixed. Leave out the company's wish list.

What the standard duties are
The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET entry for customer service representatives describes the job as "Interact with customers to provide basic or scripted information in response to routine inquiries about products and services." It then lists tasks you can turn into bullets. Three of them: "Keep records of customer interactions or transactions, recording details of inquiries, complaints, or comments, as well as actions taken." And "Resolve customers' service or billing complaints by performing activities such as exchanging merchandise, refunding money, or adjusting bills." And "Refer unresolved customer grievances to designated departments for further investigation."
Read those as a checklist: inform, record, resolve, refer. A good customer service entry covers at least three of the four with a number on each.
MIT's career office says in its resume guide that "When applying for a job you want to build a resume that targets a specific position or employer." So take the verbs from the job post. Harvard's career services, in its guide to a strong resume, says "Within headings, list information in reverse chronological order (most recent first)". Put your most recent customer service role first, with the most bullets.

Turning a duty into a bullet
- Pick the duty from the job post. Answering inquiries, resolving complaints, processing returns.
- Add the volume. Calls, chats, returns or cases per day.
- Add the outcome. First contact resolution, time to respond, a repeat issue you flagged.
- Name the tool. CRM, Zendesk, POS, Salesforce.
- Drop duties anyone would assume. "Answered the phone" is not a bullet.
For the metrics you can honestly use, see our customer service resume guide and the customer service resume keywords. The customer service skills for a resume page covers the skills line. If you want the full role resume, see the customer service representative resume and the customer service cover letter. Our resume summary examples help with the opening.
What to leave out
- The employer's entire job description pasted in.
- Numbers you do not track. Describe the work in words instead.
- Duties from jobs more than ten years ago. One line is enough.
- Soft skill labels with no proof. Show them in a bullet.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write a customer service job description for a resume?
List four to six bullets that start with a verb and include a volume and an outcome. Use the duties from the target job post as your guide.
What are the main duties of a customer service representative?
Answering inquiries, resolving complaints, keeping records of each contact, processing orders or returns and referring unresolved cases.
How many bullets should each customer service job have?
Three to five for the current or most recent job, two or three for older ones.
Should I include metrics on a customer service resume?
Yes, if you track them. Contacts per day, first contact resolution and customer satisfaction scores are common ones. If you do not have numbers, describe the process and what improved.
