Resume keywords for customer service are the words employers search for in a support or front-line resume: de-escalation, first call resolution, CSAT, ticketing systems, order processing, complaint handling, upselling and the volume you handled. The one constraint is the metric, because "excellent customer service skills" appears on every application and proves nothing. O*NET, the US Department of Labor's database, lists this core customer service representative task: "Keep records of customer interactions or transactions, recording details of inquiries, complaints, or comments, as well as actions taken." Below are 48 keywords in six groups and six complete examples. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

You have spent eight hours being polite to a man shouting about a parcel that was already on his porch. Your resume says "people person." That is not a keyword. That is a hostage situation described as a hobby.

A customer service resume with the keywords doing the work

Here is a call center agent's experience section, written so each keyword sits beside a number or a system.

Mid level: call center customer service representative, utility, complete example, 110 words

Mid level: call center customer service representative, utility (110 words)

Customer Service Representative, Prairie Gas and Electric, Omaha, NE | 2022 to present - Handle 70 to 90 inbound calls a day on billing, outages and move-in requests - Hold a 4.7 out of 5 CSAT score over the last 12 months, against a team average of 4.4 - Reach first call resolution on most billing questions by explaining meter reads and setting up payment plans - De-escalate calls from customers facing shut-off notices and route hardship cases to the assistance team - Document every contact in Salesforce Service Cloud with notes that meet the QA checklist - Keep average handle time under six minutes without dropping quality scores

Eleven keywords, each one next to a figure or a tool a supervisor can confirm.

Two of the groups map straight onto O*NET's task list. One task reads "Resolve customers' service or billing complaints by performing activities such as exchanging merchandise, refunding money, or adjusting bills." Another reads "Recommend improvements in products, packaging, shipping, service, or billing methods and procedures to prevent future problems." The second one is where most resumes go quiet, and it is the bullet that gets a team lead promoted.

Example 2: Retail customer service associate

Retail resumes need the counter work: returns, exchanges, loyalty sign-ups and the line at the register.

Entry level: retail customer service associate, home improvement store, complete example, 92 words

Example 4: Help desk technician

Help desk resumes blend customer service with technical keywords. The ticket numbers and system names matter as much as tone.

Example 5: Customer service team lead

A team lead resume should show the team's numbers and your coaching, not only your own calls.

Turning soft skills into keywords a reader believes

The two most claimed customer service skills are listening and handling conflict. NACE puts the first one plainly in its career readiness competencies: "Listen carefully to others, taking time to understand and ask appropriate questions without interrupting." It frames the second as the ability to "Effectively manage conflict, interact with and respect diverse personalities, and meet ambiguity with resilience."

Neither of those belongs in a skills list as a single word. Write them as what happened:

Phones are the center of the job. On O*NET's work context survey for this occupation, for telephone conversations, 100% responded "Every day." That is why call volume and handle time are such strong keywords: every reader knows what they mean.

Where to put customer service keywords

Use the posting's exact phrases. If it says "ticketing system," name yours. If it says "first contact resolution," use that phrase rather than "first call." Our page on ATS keywords in real job ads shows how literal that matching is.

Put metrics in the bullets, tools in a short skills line and one or two soft skills in the summary, proven by the bullets below. For more skills to choose from, see customer service skills for a resume and the full customer service resume guide. The Bureau of Labor Statistics customer service representatives profile is useful for the duties of your exact setting. The same method runs through our pages on sales keywords for a resume and financial analyst keywords.

Frequently asked questions

What are good resume keywords for customer service?

Strong choices include customer satisfaction, CSAT, first call resolution, de-escalation, complaint handling, troubleshooting, order processing, upselling and the software you used, such as Zendesk or Salesforce. The right set comes from the job posting itself. Use its exact phrases and put each one inside a bullet that shows a result.

How do I show customer service skills on a resume with no metrics?

Use volume, scope and outcomes instead of scores. Write how many calls, tickets or customers you handled per shift, which problems you solved most often and what changed because of you. "Answered 50 calls a shift on billing questions" proves more than "strong communication skills" ever can.

Should I put customer service keywords in my summary?

Yes, two or three of the most important ones. A summary such as "Customer service representative with four years in high-volume call centers, strong on de-escalation and first call resolution" gives the reader the match at once. Then prove each keyword in the experience bullets below it.

What keywords work for a call center resume?

Inbound and outbound calls, call volume, average handle time, first call resolution, CSAT, QA score, de-escalation, scripting, CRM and the phone system you used, such as Five9 or Genesys. Add the type of calls you took, such as billing or technical support, since employers filter by the work itself.

Are customer service keywords different for healthcare jobs?

The core words stay, but healthcare adds patient scheduling, insurance verification, HIPAA, check-in and check-out, copays and the electronic health record system, such as Epic. Front desk readers look for privacy and accuracy as much as friendliness, so show both in your bullets.
