Engineer Curriculum Vitae Example: 6 Full UK Engineering CVs

An engineer curriculum vitae example for a UK job has five parts in this order: contact details, a three line profile, your projects or employment with one scope line each, education, and a short technical skills block with your registration status. Keep it to two pages. The constraint is that an engineering manager reads for scope before skill, so every role needs the size of the thing you worked on. The National Careers Service says a CV "should include a section for your contact details, an introduction, your education history, your work history and references." Below are the order, the registration line, and six complete engineering CVs from placement student to chartered engineer. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Most engineers write their CV the way they write a test report: thorough, accurate and in an order only the author understands. The examples below fix the order and keep the accuracy.
The engineering CV order a UK hiring manager expects
Use reverse chronological order and the same five blocks at every level. What changes with seniority is how much space each block gets, not the order.
- Contact details. Name, town, mobile, email and a LinkedIn link. No photo, no date of birth.
- Profile. Three lines: discipline, years, the type of project and the one thing you are known for.
- Experience or projects. Job title, employer, dates, then a scope line (project value, team size, standards, site or plant) before four to six bullets.
- Education. Degree, university, classification and dates. Graduates put this above experience.
- Technical skills and registration. Software, codes and standards, and your Engineering Council status.
A CV is the UK word for what the US calls a resume. If you are applying to an American firm, our CV vs resume guide shows what to change; the US version of this page is our engineering resume examples hub.

A placement CV is how you get there.
The professional registration line, and where it goes
Engineering Council titles are the UK credential every engineering reader looks for: Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Chartered Engineer (CEng). The Engineering Council puts it this way: "The engineers and technicians who achieve professional registration (registrants) are skilled professionals who have chosen to have their expertise independently verified."
- Registered: put the letters after your name in the header, for example Priya Shah CEng MICE, and repeat the title with the institution in the skills block.
- Working towards it: write "working towards CEng, IMechE, mentor assigned" so the reader knows you are on a recognised path.
- Not started: leave it out. An empty line reads worse than no line.
On the CEng page, the Council adds that "Being professionally registered demonstrates your commitment to enhancing your knowledge, skills and competence for the engineering needs of today." That is the sentence a hiring manager has in mind when the title is missing.
Graduate engineer CV example
A graduate engineer CV puts the degree first and treats the final year project as a job. The civil engineer job profile notes: "You can do a foundation degree, higher national diploma or degree in civil engineering." Whichever route you took, name it and give the classification.

Mistakes that sink an engineering CV
- A skills list of forty software packages. Name the five you use weekly and the standards you design to.
- Bullets about the project, not your part in it. Write what you designed, checked or ran.
- No scope line. Without project value, team size or plant size the reader guesses low.
- Registration letters you do not hold. A chartered title is checkable on the Engineering Council register.
- Three pages. Two is the ceiling, even at associate level.

Frequently asked questions
What should an engineer CV include in the UK?
Contact details, a three line profile, your experience or projects with a scope line for each, education with the classification, and a technical skills block with software, standards and Engineering Council status. Graduates put education first. Leave out a photo and date of birth, and keep the whole CV to two pages at most.
How long should an engineering CV be?
Two pages at most. Students and graduates usually fit on one, and a chartered engineer with fifteen years fills two by shrinking older jobs to a single line. A third page usually means project descriptions have turned into paragraphs, so cut those back to scope lines and four to six bullets.
Should I put CEng or IEng on my CV?
Yes, if you hold it. Put the letters after your name in the header, for example CEng MIMechE, and repeat the title with the institution in the skills block. If you are working towards registration, say so with the institution named. Never list a title you do not hold, because employers can check the public register.
How do I write an engineering CV with no experience?
Treat projects as jobs. Give the university team, design project or dissertation a title, dates and bullets about what you designed, tested or calculated, with real numbers. Add any placement, apprenticeship or part time job, and list the software you have actually used. The placement and graduate examples above show the layout.
Is a curriculum vitae the same as a CV for engineers?
Yes. CV is short for curriculum vitae, and in the UK both mean the same two page document. In the US an engineer sends a resume instead, which is usually shorter and leaves out personal interests. An academic engineering CV for a research post is longer and lists publications and grants.
