Engineering Cover Letter Examples: 6 Samples by Discipline

An engineering cover letter works when it names one project, your part in it, and the result in engineering terms, then ties that to the role in the advert. The constraint is length: Prospects, the UK graduate careers service, says cover letters "should not exceed one A4 page", so you get room for one project told properly, not five told badly. The Engineering Council's UK-SPEC standard is the other reference worth knowing, because it defines the competences behind EngTech, IEng and CEng, and those are the words senior engineers use when they shortlist. Below are six complete engineering cover letter samples, checked in October 2026, for a civil graduate, a mechanical engineer, an electrical engineer, a software graduate, a placement student and a chartered engineer. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Engineers write cover letters the way they write method statements: thorough, correct and in the order things happened. That is very good for a bridge and very bad for a letter that has to be read in one go by someone with forty others to get through.
Graduate civil engineer
Graduate schemes get hundreds of letters that say "I have always been fascinated by infrastructure". Replace that sentence with the most technical thing you have actually done, even if it was a university project.

Graduate level: civil engineering graduate scheme (190 words)
Dear Ms Adeyemi,
I am applying for the Graduate Civil Engineer post on your highways scheme, reference GCE-2026-14. I graduate in July with a MEng in Civil Engineering from the University of Leeds, and my final-year project was a drainage redesign for a section of the A64 that floods most winters.
For that project I modelled the existing drainage in MicroDrainage, found that two gully outlets were undersized for the catchment, and proposed a filter drain alternative. My supervisor at the council said the design was close to one they had shortlisted themselves. I also spent a summer placement with Harlow Construction on a junction improvement, where I checked temporary works drawings and ran the site diary for six weeks.
Your scheme description mentions working towards IEng or CEng through an accredited training programme. That is exactly why I am applying to you rather than a contractor without one. I want my first three years to count towards registration.
I have attached my CV and a two-page summary of the drainage project. I am available for interview at any time in May.
Yours sincerely,
Thomas Okafor 07700 900 241 thomas.okafor@example.com
Mechanical engineer, three to five years
At mid level, the letter should show you can own a problem from fault to fix. One cost, one tolerance, one lead time. That is the language a chief engineer reads fluently.

Mid level: mechanical design engineer, four years (183 words)
Dear Mr Patel,
I am writing to apply for the Mechanical Design Engineer role at Corvell Pumps, advertised on your website. I have four years in rotating equipment design at Brayford Engineering, where I am responsible for the impeller and casing design on our mid-range centrifugal pumps.
The project I would bring to the interview is a casing redesign I led last year. Warranty returns showed cracking at the volute tongue on one model. I ran the FEA in ANSYS, found a stress concentration the original design had not modelled, and changed the radius and wall section. The revised casing passed the hydrostatic test first time, the returns for that failure stopped, and the new casting was also lighter, which our supplier priced lower.
Your advert asks for SolidWorks, FEA and experience with design for manufacture. I use SolidWorks daily, and I now sit in on every foundry review because the cracking taught me to.
I am working towards IEng registration with the IMechE and would value a role with a mentor already in place.
Yours sincerely,
Hannah Collins 07700 900 318 hannah.collins@example.com
The paragraph engineers skip is the third one: the link between your project and their advert. Prospects puts it directly: "Use keywords that appear in the job advert", because it "lets the employer know that you've read and understood the job description." Two sentences are enough.
Electrical engineer, senior
Senior letters can be shorter than graduate ones, because the CV carries the evidence. Use the letter for scale, responsibility and the regulations you sign off against.

Senior level: electrical engineer, building services (164 words)
Dear Ms Grant,
I am applying for the Senior Electrical Engineer role in your building services team. I have twelve years in electrical design for commercial and healthcare buildings, the last five as lead electrical engineer at Morland Consulting, and I am a Chartered Engineer with the IET.
Most recently I led the electrical design for a 240-bed hospital extension: HV intake, standby generation, medical IT systems and the lighting strategy. I coordinated four design engineers and two CAD technicians, sat on the client's weekly design team meetings, and signed off the design against BS 7671 and the HTM guidance for healthcare buildings.
Your advert mentions a growing healthcare portfolio and the need for someone to mentor graduates. I have supervised six graduates through to IEng or CEng submissions, and I would welcome doing the same at Grant Daniels.
I have attached my CV with a project list. I am on three months' notice.
Yours sincerely,
Daniel Hughes CEng MIET 07700 900 455 daniel.hughes@example.com
Software engineering graduate
Software letters fail in a specific way: a list of languages. The reader wants one thing you built, what it did and how you know it worked. Link to the code if it is public.

Graduate level: software engineering graduate (170 words)
Dear Hiring Team,
I am applying for the Graduate Software Engineer role at Fenwick Payments. I graduate this summer with a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Bristol, and I spent my placement year in the platform team at Northgate Bank.
At Northgate I wrote the retry logic for a payment notification service in Java and Spring Boot. Notifications had been silently failing when a downstream system timed out. I added idempotent retries with a dead letter queue and alerting, and wrote the tests that now run on every merge. Failed notifications that nobody noticed went to zero in the three months before I left.
Your advert mentions Java, Kafka and a team that owns its services in production. I used Kafka at Northgate, and I was on the team's support rota for my last four months, which taught me more than any module did.
My final-year project, a load testing tool for REST APIs, is on GitHub at github.com/example/loadline.
Kind regards,
Aisha Rahman 07700 900 522 aisha.rahman@example.com
Engineering placement or internship
For a year in industry or a summer internship, the employer is hiring potential. Show the modules and the project that match their work, and show you know what the company actually makes.

Student level: engineering placement year application (145 words)
Dear Mr Chowdhury,
I am a second-year Aerospace Engineering student at the University of Southampton and I am applying for your 12-month industrial placement in the structures team.
This year I led the structures work for our university's entry in the IMechE UAS Challenge. I designed the wing spar in carbon fibre, tested coupons to failure in the department lab, and kept the airframe under the weight limit with eleven grams to spare. Our aircraft passed the flight readiness review first time.
Your placement description mentions composite repair and stress analysis on wing components. Those are the two modules I chose this year, and I would like to see how the methods hold up on a production aircraft rather than a student one.
I have attached my CV and a one-page summary of the UAS structures report.
Yours sincerely,
Oliver Grant 07700 900 677 oliver.grant@example.com
The intern cover letter guide covers placements outside engineering in the same format.
Chartered engineer moving into management
At this level the letter answers one question: can you lead engineers and still be trusted with the engineering? Give one example of each.

Senior level: chartered engineer applying for engineering manager (156 words)
Dear Ms Whitfield,
I am applying for the Engineering Manager role at Halden Water. I am a Chartered Engineer (CEng MICE) with fifteen years in water infrastructure, and I currently lead a team of nine engineers delivering treatment works upgrades at Pennine Consulting.
As a manager, I took over a team with two open grievances and a programme four months behind. I reset the programme with the client, moved two engineers onto the critical path, and we delivered the last three works on the revised dates. Both grievances were closed within the quarter.
As an engineer, I still review every process design my team issues, and I was design lead on the phosphorus removal upgrade at Kirkby, which met its new permit limit from the first sample.
Your advert asks for both. I would welcome the chance to discuss how I would approach your AMP8 programme.
Yours sincerely,
Rachel Moore CEng MICE 07700 900 734 rachel.moore@example.com
How to structure an engineering cover letter
| Paragraph | What it does | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Role, reference, who you are in one line | Two sentences |
| Project | One project: problem, your part, result in engineering terms | Five to seven sentences |
| Match | Two or three words from the advert and where you have done them | Two to three sentences |
| Registration | IEng, CEng or EngTech status or progress, if relevant | One sentence |
| Close | What is attached, availability or notice | Two sentences |
Prospects also says "cover letters should complement your CV but not duplicate it", so the project paragraph should be the story behind one CV bullet, not a summary of all of them. If you are still deciding between registration routes, the Engineering Council's professional registration page explains each title, and UK-SPEC lists the competences in full. Prospects' own guide to cover letters has the general rules.
I read applications for my own company where the advert asked for two specific things, and most letters described a third. The posting is the brief. Read it twice, underline the nouns, and make sure two of them appear in your letter with evidence next to them.
What to leave out
- "I have always been passionate about engineering." Everyone applying has.
- Every module you took. Pick the two that match the job.
- Software lists. They belong on the CV.
- A second project. One told well beats three told in passing.
- Salary. That comes at offer stage.
For the general format, see the cover letter format guide, and if the advert asks for something very short, the short cover letter examples show how to cut this to five lines. For the full process, start with how to write a cover letter.
Frequently asked questions
How do you write a cover letter for an engineering job?
Open with the role and who you are in one line. Spend the middle on one project: the problem, what you did, and the result in engineering terms. Then match two or three words from the advert to your experience, mention registration progress if relevant, and close with what is attached.
How long should an engineering cover letter be?
No more than one A4 page, which is what Prospects recommends for cover letters generally. In practice that is 180 to 250 words in three to five paragraphs. Senior engineers can go shorter because the CV and project list carry the detail.
What should a graduate engineer put in a cover letter?
Your degree and university, your strongest technical project or placement, and why this employer's graduate scheme suits you. If the scheme is accredited towards IEng or CEng, say that registration is part of the reason you are applying. Skip the line about always loving engineering.
Should I mention chartership in an engineering cover letter?
Yes, if you hold it or are working towards it and the role is in the UK. Put CEng, IEng or EngTech after your name in the sign-off, and one sentence in the letter about your progress. Employers with accredited training schemes look for it.
Do engineers still need a cover letter in the UK?
Many engineering employers still ask for one, especially graduate schemes and consultancies. Even where it is optional, a short letter that names one relevant project is read before the CV and decides how carefully the CV is read.
