An entry level human resources resume shows the HR tasks you have already done, even if none had HR in the title: scheduling interviews, keeping records, answering employee questions, running onboarding or handling payroll data. Below are six complete samples for graduates, interns and career changers going for HR assistant, coordinator, recruiting and payroll jobs, checked in November 2026. Copy the closest one, keep the structure, and use your own numbers.
An HR manager reads the resume of someone who wants to "work with people." Everyone wants to work with people. Show the part where you handled a file, a deadline and a person who was cross about both.
Example 1: recent graduate, HR assistant
With no HR job on the resume, the HR internship or the coursework project leads. Education sits near the top because it is your strongest line.

What the work is, in the government's words
The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET summary for human resources specialists lists the tasks you can borrow verbs from. Among them: "Hire employees and process hiring-related paperwork." and "Schedule or conduct new employee orientations." and "Prepare or maintain employment records related to events, such as hiring, termination, leaves, transfers, or promotions, using human resources management system software." Your resume should show you have done a small version of at least two of these.
MIT's career office says in its resume guide: "Record accomplishments and contributions, not just responsibilities." In HR, the accomplishments are counts: hires processed, interviews booked, records updated, errors found.
Harvard's career services, in its guide to a strong resume, puts it plainly: "By articulating why you are a fit for a particular role, you can increase your chances of being interviewed." So match the order of your resume to the posting.

How to build the resume in order
- Summary. Two lines: your training, your HR-related experience and the role.
- Education. Up top if you are new to the field. Add the HR certificate or relevant courses.
- Experience. Lead with HR tasks, even in non-HR jobs: scheduling, onboarding, records, employee questions.
- Skills. HRIS, applicant tracking, Excel, payroll tools, and confidentiality.
- Keywords. Use the words from the posting, such as onboarding, employee relations or compliance.
Keep it to one page. For the keyword list, see HR resume keywords and HR skills for a resume. For a letter to send with it, see the human resources cover letter. For the role page, see the human resources resume and the HR assistant resume. For the layout of a first resume, see the first job resume guide.
What to leave out
- Working with people. Name the task instead.
- Confidential details of past employees. Describe what you did, never who.
- A skills list with no tools. Name the HRIS or ATS you used.
- Unrelated jobs in detail. Keep one line for each.
- Claims about hiring decisions you did not make. Say you screened or scheduled.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write an entry level human resources resume?
Put your education and any HR internship near the top, then list HR-type tasks with counts, then skills and tools. Keep it to one page.
What if I have no HR experience?
Use scheduling, onboarding, records, training, payroll data or customer service from other jobs. Those are the same tasks at a smaller scale.
What skills should an entry level HR resume list?
HRIS and applicant tracking systems, onboarding, employee records, scheduling, Excel, payroll basics, confidentiality and communication.
Do I need an HR certificate?
Not to apply for an assistant role, but a certificate or relevant course shows commitment. List it with the school and the year.
Should I put an objective or a summary?
A two-line summary that names the role and your closest experience is enough.
