Entry Level IT Resume: 5 Examples for Your First Tech Job

An entry level IT resume, also called an entry level tech resume or entry level information technology resume, gets interviews when it proves you can already solve the problems a help desk sees every day: password resets, printers, laptops, accounts and slow networks. The one constraint: with no IT job behind you, the proof has to come from somewhere else, so projects, a home lab, certifications and the IT tasks you did in other jobs take the place of experience. O*NET describes computer user support specialists as people who "Provide technical assistance to computer users." Below are five complete examples, tagged by starting point, plus the section order that works. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
The entry level IT posting asks for two years of experience, and the IT job where you would get those two years asks for two years as well. The loop is real. The way out is showing work you did without anyone paying you for it.
Entry level IT resume example for a new graduate
A recent graduate leads with the degree or certificate, then a projects section that reads like experience.

New graduate: associate degree in IT applying for a help desk role (148 words)

EXPERIENCE Retail Associate, electronics store, 2022 to 2025 Set up phones and laptops for customers at checkout
Put the home lab in its own section with a name. "Projects" is read. A home lab mentioned inside a hobby line is not.
What an IT hiring manager reads first
A help desk lead screening entry level resumes is checking three things: can you troubleshoot, can you talk to an annoyed user, and do you write things down. O*NET's task list for the role includes "Answer user inquiries regarding computer software or hardware operation to resolve problems" and "Maintain records of daily data communication transactions, problems and remedial actions taken, or installation activities." Your resume should show both: fixing and documenting.
The section order that works for a first IT job:
- Header with LinkedIn or a GitHub link if it shows real work.
- Summary, three lines, naming the role you want.
- Certifications, near the top, because screeners search for them.
- Technical skills, grouped: operating systems, accounts, networking, hardware, tools.
- Projects or home lab, written like jobs with bullets.
- Experience, any job, with the IT-adjacent tasks first.
- Education.
On certifications, CompTIA says A+ Core 1 "is the first of two exams required to earn the industry-standard A+ certification, designed to launch your tech career." If you are still studying, write "CompTIA A+, Core 1 passed, Core 2 scheduled" with the month. Never list a certification you have not passed as if you hold it.
Entry level IT resume example for a career changer
Career changers have something graduates do not: years of dealing with people and pressure. Lead with the transferable part and show the IT skills are real.

Entry level IT resume example from a non-IT job with tech duties
Many people already do part of an IT job inside another title. Pull those tasks to the top.

Entry level IT resume example for a first networking role
If you want to head toward networking, the projects should show subnets, switches and documentation, not only desktops. O*NET's network support profile lists tasks such as "Configure security settings or access permissions for groups or individuals" and "Back up network data," so a lab that does both is worth a bullet each.

Entry level: IT graduate targeting a NOC or junior network technician role (120 words)

How to write each section with no IT job yet
Summary. Name the role, your strongest proof and one certification. Three lines.
Skills. Group them so a screener can scan: operating systems, accounts and identity, networking, hardware, tools. Only list what you could do in front of an interviewer.
Projects. Write each one with a verb, the tools and the result, the way you would write a job bullet. A home lab, rebuilt laptops, a church network or a family business setup all count.
Experience. Every job counts. Move the IT-adjacent tasks to the top of each role: fixing the POS, setting up accounts, training people on software, keeping an inventory.

Mistakes on an entry level IT resume
- A skills list of twenty tools with nothing on the page that shows you used any of them.
- Certifications listed as held when they are only planned.
- Hiding the IT tasks you already did in a retail or office job at the bottom of the bullets.
- A two column design with icons for skill levels. Screening software often reads it badly, and "four stars in Linux" means nothing.
- No documentation anywhere. Help desks live on notes; show that you write them.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write an entry level IT resume with no experience?
Replace the missing job with proof: a home lab, rebuilt laptops, a network you set up, coursework projects and certifications such as CompTIA A+. Write each project like a job with bullets, then list any job where you fixed tech, set up accounts or trained people on software, with those tasks first.
What should I put on an entry level information technology resume?
Put a three line summary naming the role, certifications near the top, grouped technical skills, a projects or home lab section, any experience with IT tasks first and your education. Show both fixing and documenting, because help desk work is troubleshooting plus writing down what you did.
Is CompTIA A+ worth putting on an entry level IT resume?
Yes, if you hold it or have passed part of it. CompTIA describes A+ as an industry standard certification for starting a tech career, and screeners search for it. If you are mid way, write which exam you passed and when the next one is scheduled. Never list it as held before you pass.
What is a good objective for an entry level IT resume?
Use a three line summary instead of an objective: the role you want, your strongest proof and a certification. For example, "IT graduate with a Windows Server home lab and CompTIA A+, looking for a Tier 1 help desk role." It tells the reader what you can do, not only what you want.
Is an entry level tech resume different from an entry level IT resume?
Mostly no. Postings say tech, IT or information technology for the same first jobs: help desk, IT support, desktop support and junior network roles. If the posting is for a software or data role instead, lead with code projects and a portfolio link rather than a home lab, and keep the same one page, projects first structure.
