Certifications for Jobs: 7 With the Exact Resume Line

Pick the certification the job adverts name, then write it as body, credential, number and date. The filter that matters is whether an employer can verify the credential, which is why the seven below are chosen from bodies that publish their exam rules and issue a number to every holder. Each entry gives the body's own wording, the cost or validity where the body states it, and the resume line, checked in September 2026. Seven certifications, and the line each one earns

1. CompTIA A+, for IT support and help desk roles. CompTIA calls it "the industry standard to start your IT career", and it is two exams: "Core 1 (hardware and networking) and Core 2 (operating systems and security), which you can take in any order."

2. CompTIA Security+, for security analyst and systems roles. CompTIA publishes the whole shape of it: "maximum of 90, a mix of multiple-choice and performance-based questions", 90 minutes, passing score 750 on a 100 to 900 scale, with recommended experience of "CompTIA Network+ and two years of experience working in a security/ systems administrator job role".

3. AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, for cloud and cloud-adjacent roles. AWS states the exam is "90 minutes", "65 questions; either multiple choice or multiple response", costs "100 USD", and answers the renewal question directly: "This certification is valid for 3 years."

4. PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technician, for pharmacy work. PTCB states that "Employers prefer, and many require, their pharmacy technicians to be PTCB CPhTs", and that "the legal scope of practice for CPhTs is defined by individual State Boards of Pharmacy", so the state registration belongs on the line too.

5. ServSafe Food Protection Manager, for supervisory food service roles. It is the proctored tier: ServSafe states the certification "must be provided to you under the supervision of a registered ServSafe Proctor", and that proctors may not administer exams remotely by web application.

6. EPA Section 608, for anyone touching refrigerant. The EPA sets it in rule, not preference: technicians "who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants into the atmosphere must be certified", and the credentials "do not expire".

7. OSHA 10 and 30, for construction and general industry, with one caveat. Write it as training, not certification. OSHA is unusually blunt: "None of the courses within the Outreach Training Program is considered a certification." It also warns that "Cards cannot be issued if completed 5 years ago."

How to choose between them

Read six live adverts for the job you want and count which credential appears. That is the whole method, and it beats any ranked list, because certification demand is local and sector specific.

Where the adverts disagree, use CareerOneStop's Certification Finder, which lets you search "by Certification Name, Organization, Industry or Occupation". CareerOneStop is sponsored by the US Department of Labor and states plainly that a certification is "an item that hiring employers may look for on resumes", and that "Some employers may also require workers to be certified in their fields."

Then check three things on the body's own page before you pay: whether the exam is proctored, whether the credential expires, and whether the body issues a verifiable number. A credential that fails all three is a course, and a course goes in a training block.

How to list them so a recruiter can check

Four parts on one line: full name, issuing body, credential number, date. Add the expiry when the body sets one, as AWS does with its three-year validity. Add one clause of context when the credential changed your work, as the cloud and beer service lines above do.

Order the block by relevance to the advert, not by date. Put it above Education when the certification is a stated requirement, and below Education when it is a bonus. Keep training courses in a separate block so the certifications block stays clean.

What the credential number actually buys you

A name is a claim and a number is a fact. Bodies build verification because employers ask for it: CompTIA and AWS both issue a unique holder identifier, PTCB registration sits beside a state board record, and ServSafe certificates can be validated from its own site.

So the number does two jobs. It tells a screener the credential is real without a phone call, and it tells them you knew that. Candidates who print the number get fewer "can you send proof" emails and reach the interview stage sooner.

Mistakes that make a real certification look fake

• Writing acronyms with no body, so a keyword search for the full name misses you.
• Listing OSHA 10 as a certification when OSHA says it is not one.
• Naming a bootcamp or prep course as the credential.
• Leaving the credential number off when every holder gets one.
• Keeping an expired AWS or CompTIA line with no renewal date.
• Stacking five overlapping certificates from one vendor to fill space.

What certifications should i get?

The ones named in the adverts for the job you want, in your area. Read six postings and count the credentials. In IT support that is usually CompTIA A+, in cloud the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, in pharmacy the PTCB CPhT, and in any refrigerant work the legally required EPA Section 608.

Are it certifications worth it?

They are worth it when the advert asks for one and the body issues a verifiable credential. CompTIA and AWS both publish exam length, question count and passing standards, and AWS states its Cloud Practitioner certification "is valid for 3 years". Without a number and a date on the resume, the same certification proves little.

What are technical certifications?

Credentials awarded after a technical exam, often with a hands-on component. CompTIA uses "performance-based questions" alongside multiple choice, and the EPA requires a proctored core test for Universal certification. Vendor certifications such as AWS sit here too, and they expire, which is why the renewal date belongs on the line.

How to get certifications?

Choose the credential from live adverts, read the body's own exam page, then register directly with the body or its test provider. Check the cost, the proctoring rule and the validity period first. AWS lists its Cloud Practitioner exam at 100 USD with 65 questions in 90 minutes, which is the level of detail to expect.

How to list certifications on resume examples?

Use one line per credential: full name, issuing body, credential number, date, then the expiry if there is one. The seven examples above show the shape for IT, cloud, pharmacy, food service, HVAC and construction training. Keep course completions in a separate training block.
