Printed Resume: 6 Print-Ready Samples and Paper Tips

A printed resume is the same one-page resume you send online, set up so it survives a printer: black text on plain white or ivory paper, a clean font, margins that do not clip, and one page per person. Below are six print-ready samples for a career fair, a walk-in, a trade site and an interview, checked in November 2026, then the paper, printer and copies advice from college career offices.
Somewhere there is a hiring manager holding a resume that came out of a printer with a grey stripe down the middle, and he is not going to ask what the stripe is hiding. Print yours first and look at it.
Example 1: a student at a career fair
At a career fair you hand over paper to someone who has already met forty people. Put the degree, the date and the one thing you want remembered at the top, and keep everything on one page.

What career offices say about paper and printing
College career offices give almost the same advice on printing. Marist University's career services page says: "Use high quality paper of at least 20-pound weight." Capital University's résumé guide is stricter and says "Make sure you use résumé-weight paper, at least 24# (copy paper is 20#)." Its résumé checklist asks for "Plain, heavyweight (24#) résumé paper, white, grey, or ivory." Vaughn College's resume guide adds that plain paper "is more professional then paper with cute borders" and suggests avoiding very heavy stock that jams and marbled stock that photocopies badly.
On the printer, Capital University says "Use laser printing, or a very high quality copy." On copies, Marist is plain: "Always carry extra copies of your resume to the interview." Get the layout checked first. Marist suggests having a career office critique it before you make copies, and that advice is cheap.

How to print it
- Check it on screen at 100%. What clips or wraps on screen will clip or wrap on paper.
- Print one test page on plain paper. Look at margins, the footer and any page break.
- Use a laser printer. Ink on cheap paper smudges, and a smudge reads as carelessness.
- Pick resume weight paper. The career offices above point to 20-pound as the floor and 24-pound as the better choice, in white, light grey or ivory.
- Do not fold, staple or clip it. Carry the copies flat in a folder or portfolio.
- Bring more copies than people. A panel can turn into three people on the day.
Keep the file you print from as a PDF so fonts and spacing do not move. Our guides to resume fonts, the one page resume and resume length cover what fits on the sheet. If you also send it online, check the ATS friendly resume guide so the same file works in both places.
What to leave out of a printed resume
- Colour blocks and dark backgrounds. They eat toner and photocopy as grey.
- Tiny type. Under 10 points is hard to read on paper, and nobody holds a resume at arm's length.
- A decorative border. Plain paper wins.
- Links you want clicked. Paper has no click. Write the address in full.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to print a resume?
Print from a PDF on a laser printer, on white or ivory paper heavier than copy paper. Do one test print before you make the full set.
What paper should I use for a printed resume?
Career offices point to resume weight paper, at least 24-pound, in white, grey or ivory. Standard 20-pound copy paper is the floor, not the goal.
How many copies of my resume should I bring?
Bring more copies than the number of people you expect to meet. Five or six in a flat folder is a sensible number for most interviews and fairs.
Do I still need a printed resume?
Often yes, for a career fair, a walk-in or an interview with several people. For online applications, send the digital file.
Should a printed resume be different from an online one?
The content is the same. Only the format changes: no clickable links, no dark backgrounds and margins checked on a test print.
Can I print my resume in colour?
A touch of colour for headings is fine on a good printer, but black on white is safer, since it photocopies cleanly.
