Problem solving skills in a resume work only when they come with a story: what broke, what you did, what changed. The words "problem solver" on their own tell the reader nothing, because every applicant owns them. Below are six complete resumes, checked in November 2026, where the problem solving is shown inside the bullets, from a first job to a senior role, plus a method for writing your own.
"Excellent problem solver" is the I love a challenge of resumes. Everyone has it, nobody can check it, and the software scoring your resume has already seen it ten thousand times today. A broken process you fixed, with a number, beats it in one line.
Example 1: a first job, school and part-time work
With little experience, use the small fixes. A cashier who found why the till was always short has a real problem solving story.

What a problem solving skill actually is
The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET database lists Complex Problem Solving as a transferable skill and defines it as "Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions." That definition has four moves: spot the problem, gather facts, weigh options, act. Your bullets should show at least two of them.
MIT's career office, in its resume guide, says "When applying for a job you want to build a resume that targets a specific position or employer." So read the job post for the kind of problem the employer has (late orders, angry customers, broken data, slow releases) and pick the story that matches.
Harvard's career services also publishes a guide to a strong resume. The format below is plain advice, not a quote from it: a problem solving bullet is a verb, the problem, the result.

Write your own problem solving bullet
- Start with the problem, in plain words. Weekend discharges were delayed is a problem. Challenging environment is not.
- Say what you did that was yours. Mapped, traced, rewrote, tested, escalated.
- End with a change you can defend. A number is best. If you do not have one, say who noticed and what stopped happening.
- Match the job post. Pick the problem type the employer mentions.
- Keep the skills list short. One line, "root cause analysis" or "troubleshooting", with the proof sitting in your bullets.
For more on the skills list itself, see our guides to resume skills, soft skills for a resume and hard skills for a resume. To place them on the page, see the skills section guide. Our customer service resume guide shows the same method with support metrics.
What to leave out
- The phrase "problem solver" in the summary with nothing behind it.
- Invented percentages. If you cannot back the number, describe the change.
- A problem you were not part of. Write what you did, not what the team did.
- Five different problems in one bullet. One story per bullet.
Frequently asked questions
How do I show problem solving skills on a resume?
Put a short story in your experience bullets: the problem, your action, the result. Add one line in the skills section with the matching skill name.
What are examples of problem solving skills for a resume?
Root cause analysis, troubleshooting, critical thinking, data analysis, process improvement, decision making and escalation judgement. Pick the ones the job post names.
Should problem solving go in the summary or the skills section?
Both can carry it, briefly. The proof belongs in the experience bullets, because that is where a reader looks for evidence.
What if I have no work experience?
Use school projects, volunteer work or part-time jobs. A cashier who ended a recurring shortage has a better story than a long skills list.
Is problem solving a hard skill or a soft skill?
It sits closer to a soft skill, but it is shown through hard evidence, such as tools used and results reached.
