Product Management Keywords: 48 Terms and 6 Resume Examples

Product management keywords are the terms hiring teams and applicant tracking systems look for on a product manager resume: roadmap, prioritization, user research, stakeholder alignment, product strategy, go-to-market, A/B testing, KPIs and the tools you use. The one constraint is proof, because a keyword only counts when a bullet shows you did it. Atlassian's product manager guide sums up the role this way: "A product manager defines product strategy, roadmap, and features, balancing business, technology, and user needs." Below are 48 keywords in six groups and six complete resume examples. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Every product manager resume says data-driven, customer-obsessed and cross-functional. Read three in a row and they turn into one person. The keywords below only work with the proof attached.

A product manager resume with the keywords in place

Here is what it looks like when the keywords sit inside results instead of a list. A mid-level product manager at a software company.

Complete Mid level: Product manager, B2B software example, 105 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Mid level: Product manager, B2B software (105 words)

Product Manager, Ledgerly (accounting software), Austin, TX | 2022 to present

- Own the roadmap for invoicing, used by small business customers, and set quarterly OKRs with engineering and design - Ran 30 customer interviews and a usage data review that showed late payments, not invoice design, were the real problem - Prioritized an automatic payment reminder over three requested features, using a simple RICE score shared with stakeholders - Launched reminders with a go-to-market plan agreed with sales and support; tracked adoption and churn in Amplitude - Ran an A/B test on reminder timing and shipped the winning version to all customers

Eleven keywords, and not one of them is in a list of adjectives. Each sits next to the thing it did.

48 product management keywords, in six groups

Discovery and research (8)

Those four map to the discovery, prioritization, leadership and strategy groups above. A strong resume shows at least one bullet from each.

Example 2: Associate product manager resume, entry level

An associate product manager has little or no PM title history. The keywords come from projects, internships and adjacent work.

Complete Entry level: Associate product manager after a PM internship example, 158 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

At this level the reader wants portfolio decisions, team building and business results.

Example 5: Engineer moving into product management

Career changers already hold many of the keywords; the work is to rewrite the bullets around users and decisions instead of code.

Complete Mid level: Software engineer moving into product management example, 126 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Summary line for the switch: Software engineer with four years in logistics software, moving into product management, with hands-on discovery, requirements and launch work on a returns module.

Example 6: Product manager summary and skills section

If the posting is keyword-heavy, your summary and skills section are where the exact terms go. Keep the summary to three lines and the skills to one block.

Complete Mid level: Summary and skills section for a product manager example, 61 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

How to use product management keywords without stuffing

Harvard's career services office asks for resume writing that is "Fact-based (quantify and qualify)". That is the rule for keywords too:

NACE defines leadership, one of its career readiness competencies, as "Recognize and capitalize on personal and team strengths to achieve organizational goals." For a product manager that is influence without authority, and the bullet that proves it names the teams you aligned and the decision they agreed on.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most important product management keywords for a resume?

The most common are product strategy, roadmap, prioritization, user research, stakeholder management, A/B testing, KPIs, OKRs, go-to-market and Agile, plus tools such as Jira, Figma and an analytics product. Use the ones in the posting you are applying for, each inside a bullet that shows what you did with it.

Where should keywords go on a product manager resume?

Put the most important ones in your summary and experience bullets, where they sit next to results. Then repeat the tools and methods in a short skills section. Applicant tracking systems read the whole document, and human readers trust a keyword more when they find it in a bullet with an outcome.

What are product manager buzzwords to avoid?

Avoid self-descriptions that cannot be checked, such as visionary, data-driven, customer-obsessed or rockstar. They describe every applicant. Replace each one with a bullet that proves it: a customer interview that changed the roadmap, an A/B test you shipped, or a metric you moved.

How many keywords should a product manager resume have?

There is no fixed number. Cover the main requirements in the posting, usually ten to fifteen terms, and make sure each appears at least once in context. Repeating a keyword many times does not help a human reader, and it makes the resume read like a list.

What skills should an associate product manager put on a resume?

User research, writing user stories, basic SQL or analytics, Agile and tools such as Jira and Figma are the usual core. Show them through internships, class projects or a side project, with one bullet each that names what you learned from users and what changed because of it.
