A retail assistant CV gets you an interview when the first lines show you can serve customers, handle the till and stock, and work the days the shop needs, with one real number from a job, a club or a school role. The constraint is time: a store manager reads these between deliveries, so availability and till experience belong near the top, not on page two. The National Careers Service lists the job as answering customer questions, serving at tills, handling refunds, stocking shelves and keeping the store tidy. Below are six complete CV examples for a retail assistant, from a first Saturday job to a key holder, checked against that profile in October 2026. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Every retail CV says "excellent customer service skills". The shop manager reading it has 40 of them, a delivery at the back door and a rota with two holes in it. The CV that mentions Saturdays is the one that gets the phone call.
Retail assistant CV with no experience
For a first shop job, the manager reads for three things: you will turn up, you can count money, and you will talk to strangers. A sports team, a school role or helping at a family business covers all three if you write what you did.

The layout of a retail assistant CV
A retail CV follows the standard UK order, with one extra section that most other jobs do not need: availability. The National Careers Service CV guide says "Your CV should include a section for your contact details, an introduction, your education history, your work history and references."
- Contact details: name, town, phone, email. No photo, no date of birth.
- Profile: three lines. The job you want, the retail or customer work you have done, and the days you can work.
- Experience: paid jobs, volunteering in charity shops and Christmas temp work, each with the tasks a store manager recognises.
- Education: GCSEs with English and Maths grades, then anything after. Some employers, the National Careers Service says, "may want you to have GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), such as English and maths."
- Skills: tills, refunds, stock, languages, any certificate.
- Availability: the days and hours you can work, in one line.
Skills to put on a retail assistant CV
The National Careers Service skills list for the role starts with "customer service skills", "the ability to work well with others" and "excellent verbal communication skills". Do not paste those words in. Write the thing you did that proves each one: the queue you served, the new starter you trained, the complaint you sorted out. A retail CV is an answer to the advert, so match its words where you honestly can.
Prospects gives the same advice for first CVs: "Presentation and being easy to read are essential; don't use fancy fonts, columns, icons, or anything in the header or footer."
If you have no shop work at all yet, start with our CV example with no experience. For other UK layouts, see the CV examples page. Applying to an American store? Frequently asked questions
How do I write a CV for a retail assistant?
Open with a three-line profile naming the job, your customer or till experience and the days you can work. Then list experience with tasks a store manager recognises: tills, refunds, stock, fitting rooms. Add GCSEs with English and Maths, specific skills and an availability line. Keep it to one page.
What should a retail assistant CV say with no experience?
Use school, college, clubs, volunteering and family business help. Anything where you handled money, served people or were trusted with responsibility counts. Charity shop volunteering is the closest match, and the National Careers Service names it as a way to pick up customer service and retail skills. Put your availability clearly.
What skills go on a retail assistant CV?
Customer service, till and card payments, refunds and exchanges, stock replenishment and rotation, visual merchandising, age-restricted sales, teamwork and any language you speak. Prove each one with a task from a job, club or school role. A skill with no example under it reads as a claim.
Is a sales assistant CV the same as a retail assistant CV?
Yes. The National Careers Service lists shop assistant, store assistant and retail sales assistant as alternative titles for a sales assistant. Use the exact title from the advert at the top of your CV so the manager, and any screening software, sees a direct match.
How long should a retail assistant CV be?
One page for most applicants, two at most for key holders and supervisors with several jobs. Store managers read CVs quickly, so the profile, recent experience and availability should all fit on the first page. Cut older jobs to one line each before you cut any detail from the recent ones.
