Covering Letter Example for Retail: 6 Letters for UK Shops

A good covering letter for a retail job fits on half a page and tells the store manager three things: that you can serve customers well, that you can work the hours on the rota, and that you chose this shop for a reason. The constraint is time. Store managers read applications between deliveries and the next shift, and Prospects says the length consensus among recruiters is "the shorter, the better". Below are six complete covering letter examples for retail, tagged by level: no experience, a Christmas temp, an experienced sales assistant, a career changer, a supervisor and a short email version. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
You know the letter you are tempted to write. "I am a people person with a passion for retail." The manager reading it has also served a customer who returned a used candle, and she has stopped believing in passion. She believes in Saturdays.
Retail covering letter with no experience
You do not need shop experience for most sales assistant jobs. The National Careers Service says "It will be helpful if you have retail or customer service experience though this is not essential." Show the qualities it lists instead, such as "customer service skills" and "patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations", through things you have actually done.

Entry level: student with no paid work, weekend sales assistant (177 words)
Dear Ms Collins,
I am applying for the weekend Sales Assistant role at your Kingston store, advertised on your careers page. I am in Year 12 at a sixth form in Kingston and can work every Saturday and Sunday, plus full weeks during the school holidays.
I have not had a paid job yet, but I have volunteered at a hospice charity shop every Saturday morning since last summer. I serve customers at the till, sort and price donations, and keep the rails tidy between the morning and afternoon rush. When the manager is in the back, I am often the only person on the shop floor.
I shop in your store with my family, and I like that staff are trained on the products rather than just the tills. I would enjoy learning the ranges well enough to recommend something, not just point to an aisle.
I am available for an interview after 4pm on weekdays or at any time at the weekend. Thank you for reading my application.
Yours sincerely,
Amelia Brooks 07700 900127 amelia.brooks@example.com
Christmas temp covering letter
Seasonal roles are a common way in. The National Careers Service notes "You could start as a temporary sales assistant and work at the weekend or during a busy season like Christmas." Say exactly which weeks you can work, because that is the first thing a manager planning the rota needs.

Entry level: university student applying for Christmas temp work (171 words)
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for a Christmas Temporary Sales Assistant role at your Manchester Arndale store. I am home from university from 12 December to 10 January and can work any shift in that period, including early mornings, late nights and Boxing Day.
Last summer I worked for eight weeks at a festival food stall. We served long queues for twelve hours at a time, I ran the card machine and the cash float, and I learned to keep smiling at a customer who has waited forty minutes for chips. The pace of a shop in December will not surprise me.
I chose your store because I already know most of your stock from buying gifts there, and I would be comfortable helping customers who are looking for something specific at the last minute.
I am happy to do any induction or training sessions before the season starts. I am available for an interview in person or by video at any time.
Yours faithfully,
Ryan Patel 07700 900845 ryan.patel@example.com
Covering letter for an experienced sales assistant
With a year or more on the shop floor, move from qualities to evidence. Name the tasks the advert lists and show you already do them.

Mid level: two years in fashion retail, moving to a department store (177 words)
Dear Mr Hughes,
I am writing to apply for the Sales Assistant position in the homeware department of your Edinburgh store. I have two years of experience at a high street fashion retailer, where I work on the tills, the fitting rooms and the stockroom on a full-time rota.
In my current role I am trusted to open the tills, handle refunds and exchanges up to the supervisor limit, and process deliveries when we are short of stockroom staff. I am one of three people trained on our click and collect system, and I usually cover it on Saturdays, which is our busiest day for online orders.
I want to move into homeware because customers spend longer choosing and ask more questions, and I enjoy that part of the job most. I have read your advert carefully and I am comfortable with the weekend and late night shifts it describes.
I can start with two weeks' notice. I would welcome the chance to meet you and talk about the role.
Yours sincerely,
Chloe Robertson 07700 900592 chloe.robertson@example.com
Retail covering letter for a career changer
Hospitality, call centres and care work all build the skills a shop needs. Name the overlap in one paragraph and do not apologise for the change.

Mid level: barista moving into a supermarket customer assistant role (176 words)
Dear Store Manager,
I am applying for the Customer Assistant role at your Leicester superstore. I have worked as a barista for three years, and I am looking for a role with more regular hours and a clear route to a supervisor post.
Coffee shops and supermarkets ask for many of the same things. I serve a queue quickly without rushing the person in front of me, handle cash and card payments accurately, and follow food safety rules on date checks and allergens every shift. I also open the café alone two mornings a week, which means I am used to responsibility before anyone else arrives.
I know a supermarket is bigger and faster, and I would like to start on the checkouts and the shop floor and learn the stock side properly. Your advert mentions training towards team leader roles, which is exactly why I am applying here rather than elsewhere.
I am available for early, late and weekend shifts and can attend an interview at short notice.
Yours faithfully,
Marcus Bennett 07700 900233 marcus.bennett@example.com
Covering letter for a retail supervisor
At supervisor level the manager wants to know whether you can run a shift. The National Careers Service describes the next step up as people who "look after stores, motivate staff to achieve sales targets, organise promotional events and monitor industry trends", so show that you already do some of it.

Senior: sales assistant applying for a supervisor post (181 words)
Dear Mrs Ahmed,
I am applying for the Retail Supervisor position at your Cardiff store. I have four years as a sales assistant with your competitor across the road, and for the last year I have been the key holder who opens and closes the store on Sundays.
On those shifts I brief the team of six at the start of the day, cover breaks, cash up and complete the safe and banking paperwork. I also run our window and promotional displays from the head office plan each month, and I train new starters on the till and the returns policy in their first week.
What I have not done yet is manage staff absence or hold formal reviews. I would like to learn both properly, and your advert says supervisors complete a management training programme in the first six months, which is one of the main reasons I am applying.
I can give one month's notice. I would be glad to come in and meet you, and I am available any weekday morning.
Yours sincerely,
Natalie Evans 07700 900764 natalie.evans@example.com
Short email covering letter for a retail job
Many shops ask you to email a CV or hand one in. Prospects suggests that when sending electronically you "put the text in the body of the email rather than as an attachment, to avoid it being detected by spam filters." Keep the email to four short paragraphs.

Any level: short email to send with your CV (92 words)
Subject: Sales Assistant application, Rachel Green
Dear Mr Taylor,
I would like to apply for the part-time Sales Assistant role advertised in your shop window. My CV is attached.
I have eighteen months of experience at a bakery counter, where I serve customers, handle cash and keep the display stocked through the day. I am available Thursday to Sunday, including evenings.
I live ten minutes from the shop and can start straight away. I would be happy to come in for a chat at any time.
Kind regards,
Rachel Green 07700 900389
How to write a covering letter for retail
Prospects suggests a structure of up to four paragraphs. In the first, "Begin by stating the position you're applying for, where you saw it advertised and when you're available to start." For a shop job, add the shifts you can work in the same paragraph.
- First paragraph: the job title, the store, where you saw it, and your availability.
- Second paragraph: customer service, tills, stock or displays, with something specific you have done.
- Third paragraph: why this shop, in one or two honest sentences.
- Last paragraph: when you can start and when you can come in for an interview.
Sign off "Yours sincerely" when you have used the manager's name and "Yours faithfully" when you have not, which is the rule Prospects gives. Send the letter with a CV built for the same job; our retail CV template shows six to copy. If the shop is in the US, the retail sales associate cover letter follows American conventions. For an email application, our guide to the job application email has more subject lines, and if you are applying for a retail apprenticeship, the apprenticeship cover letter examples fit better.
Frequently asked questions
What should I write in a covering letter for a retail job?
State the job and store, where you saw it and the shifts you can work. Then give one or two examples of customer service, till work or stock handling, say why you want this shop, and close with when you can start. Keep it to half a page; store managers read quickly between shifts.
How do I write a retail covering letter with no experience?
Use volunteering, school, clubs or caring at home as your evidence. The National Careers Service says retail experience is helpful but not essential. Show patience, reliability and friendliness through something you did, such as charity shop volunteering, and make your availability very clear. Weekend and holiday availability matters a lot to shop managers.
How long should a covering letter for retail be?
Three or four short paragraphs, around 150 to 200 words, on less than one page. Prospects says cover letters should not exceed one A4 page, and for shop roles shorter is better. A store manager wants your availability, one good example and your reason for applying, not your life story.
Should I hand in a covering letter with my CV in store?
Yes, if you can. Print a short letter addressed to the manager by name, fold it with your CV and ask to hand it to the manager directly. Dress as you would for a shift. If the store only takes online applications, paste the letter into the form or the email instead.
What is the difference between a covering letter and a cover letter?
None in meaning. Covering letter is the more traditional British term and cover letter is the American one, but UK employers use both. Write the letter the same way whichever word the advert uses, and use UK spelling and the Yours sincerely or Yours faithfully sign off for a UK shop.
