Sorority on Resume: 7 Examples of How to List Greek Life
By CVBooster Team · Published · Updated

To put a sorority on a resume, list it like a job: the organization's full name and chapter, your role, the dates, and the one to three bullets that the University of Rochester's Greek life resume guide suggests. It goes under Leadership if you held an office, or under Activities if you were a member. The same rules apply to a fraternity. Below are seven complete entries, from a first-year member to a chapter president and a graduate a few years out.
A resume line that only says "Member, sorority" tells the reader you paid dues. A line that says you ran recruitment for 180 potential new members tells them you can run a process with a deadline. Same chapter, very different resume.
All chapter, council and university names below are invented. Use your organization's real legal name.
Example 1: general member, no office
You do not need a title for the entry to count. Committees, philanthropy events and chapter projects are all experience.

Entry level: Sorority member, no officer role (48 words)
ACTIVITIES Xi Psi Theta Sorority, Iota Chapter, Brennock State University | Member, Sept 2025 to present - Served on the philanthropy committee for a spring 5K that raised $6,200 for a local literacy nonprofit - Planned and staffed two campus study nights per semester for 40+ members

What university career offices say
The University of Rochester's fraternity and sorority office and career center publish a resume guide for Greek life. Its first formatting rule: "Put the legal name of your organization, and include the chapter." It also says: "When describing responsibilities, steer clear of pronouns." And on length: "Limit your responsibilities to 1-3 bullets for your responsibilities depending on position and space."
WPI's career development center, in its tip sheet on marketing Greek life on your resume, encourages including it and gives one reason: "Many recruiters and employers may have been involved in Greek life and connect with your involvement, or be aware of the strong transferable skills that come from being involved in Greek life."
MIT's career office makes the wider point in its resume guide: "Remember: experience comes in many forms." A chapter office is one of those forms. Describe it in terms of the job you want.
Example 2: recruitment chair

Mid level: Recruitment chair (63 words)
LEADERSHIP Recruitment Chair, Xi Psi Theta Sorority, Iota Chapter, Brennock State University | Jan 2025 to Dec 2025 - Ran fall recruitment for 180 potential new members across four rounds, with a team of 12 recruitment counselors - Built the event schedule, room bookings and a shared tracking sheet; every round started on time - Extended 38 bids; 36 new members accepted
Example 3: treasurer
The treasurer entry is the one finance and accounting recruiters read twice. Give the budget and what you tracked.

Mid level: Chapter treasurer (71 words)
LEADERSHIP Treasurer, Omega Rho Kappa Sorority, Delta Chapter, Corlett University | May 2024 to May 2025 - Managed an annual operating budget of $85,000 for a chapter of 110 members - Collected dues through an online payment system and cut late payments from 22 to 6 per semester with automatic reminders and a payment plan option - Presented a monthly budget report to the executive board and the chapter advisor

Example 6: fraternity officer

Where it goes on the resume
- Leadership section. Use it if you held an office or chaired a committee. It sits under Education for students and recent graduates.
- Activities or Involvement section. Use it for membership, committees and events. See the activity resume example for layout.
- Experience section. Only if the role was paid, such as a house manager position. Otherwise keep it out of Experience.
- Honors. Greek honor societies are not social sororities. List them with your awards on the resume or near your dean's list line.
How to write each bullet
- Start with a verb. Ran, managed, organized, led, designed.
- Give a size. Members, budget, events, dollars raised, hours.
- Show a result. On time, up from last year, new process kept by the next officer.
- Match the job. For a sales role, lead with recruitment. For finance, the treasurer budget. For HR, new member education.
For first-year students, see the college freshman resume. For more lines on leadership, see leadership skills examples. For service hours, see resumes with volunteer work.
When to leave it off
Keep the entry if it shows a skill the job needs. Cut it or shorten it when you have real work experience that says the same thing, or when the line is only membership with nothing under it. You never have to list it. Some applicants also remove Greek letters from a resume for a field where they think it will not land well; the choice is yours, and the skills can stay under a neutral line such as "Treasurer, student organization."
Frequently asked questions
How do you put a sorority on a resume?
Write the full organization name and chapter, your role, the dates and one to three bullets with numbers, the range Rochester's resume guide gives. Put it under Leadership if you held an office, or under Activities if you were a member.
Should I put my sorority on my resume?
Yes, if you were active and can show a skill such as budgeting, recruiting, event planning or leading a team. If you only paid dues, the line adds little.
How do I list a fraternity on my resume?
The same way: organization and chapter, role, dates and results. Officer roles go under Leadership.
Where does Greek life go on a resume?
Under Leadership for officer roles, under Activities or Involvement for membership. Place it below Education while you are a student or recent graduate.
When should I take my sorority off my resume?
When your work experience shows the same skills more strongly, usually a few years after graduation, or when you only have a membership line with nothing to back it up.
