Speech Therapist Resume Example: 6 SLP Samples by Setting

By · Published · Updated

6 min read

A speech therapist resume puts your credentials at the top (CCC-SLP or clinical fellowship status and your state license) and then shows, in numbers, the caseload you carried, the disorders you treated and the progress your clients made. Below are six complete speech-language pathologist resumes, written for a clinical fellow, a school, a pediatric clinic, a hospital, an assistant and a private practice, and the credentials every one of them lists.

Hiring managers in speech-language pathology read for three things before they read anything else: are you licensed, who have you treated, and how many. Put the answers where they cannot miss them.

Example 1: a clinical fellow, new graduate

A clinical fellow has little paid history, so supervised hours and placements are the experience. Name each setting and what you did there.

What the sources agree on

The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET database describes the work of speech-language pathologists in one line: "Assess and treat persons with speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders." The resume should name the areas you treat from that list, not just the word therapy.

Credentials sit in their own block because employers verify them. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) runs the certification program for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP), and its site includes a way to verify an individual's status. State licensure is separate, so list both.

MIT's career office says in its resume guide: "Your experience descriptions shouldn't read like job descriptions." Harvard's career services adds that resume language should be "Specific rather than general" in its resume guide. For an SLP, specific means ages, disorders, caseload and results.

Frequently asked questions

What should a speech therapist resume include?

Credentials (CCC-SLP or fellowship status, state license), experience with caseload, ages and disorders, education and clinical placements, and skills.

How do I write a speech therapist resume as a new graduate?

List your clinical fellowship or temporary license, then your placements as experience, with the setting, number of clients and what you did.

How long should an SLP resume be?

One page suits new graduates and most staff roles. A second page is fine for senior roles with supervision, publications or a practice to run.

Do I list ASHA certification and state license separately?

Yes. They are separate credentials, and employers verify each one.

What skills should an SLP list?

Evaluation and treatment of speech, language, voice and fluency, dysphagia, AAC, language sample analysis, documentation, parent coaching and any second language.
