Resumes with volunteer work follow one rule: write the volunteering like a job. Name the organisation, your role, the dates and what you did, with a number or an outcome. Below are six complete resumes where volunteering carries real weight, for a student, a career changer, a parent returning to work, a nonprofit hire and a senior professional, checked in November 2026.
Volunteering is the only experience on your resume that you were not paid to be good at, which makes it the one hiring managers find hardest to fake. Give it the same space as paid work when it is relevant. Give it one line when it is not.
Example 1: a student whose best experience is volunteering
When you have no paid work yet, the volunteer role goes under Experience, not at the bottom. List it in the same format as a job.

What career offices say about volunteering
Berkeley's career center answers the question directly in its resume advice, and the answer is yes: "Volunteer work allows you to acquire hands-on experience and develop skills in the same way that paid positions do." So the skills count. What changes is how much space you give it.
Two more university guides give the general rules that apply to volunteering too. MIT's resume guide says "When applying for a job you want to build a resume that targets a specific position or employer." Harvard's guide to a strong resume says "Within headings, list information in reverse chronological order (most recent first)". Put together: choose the volunteer roles that match the target job, and order them like any other entry.

Where to place volunteer work
- Under Experience if it is relevant, recent or your strongest material. Use the same format as a job.
- In its own section called Volunteer Experience if you have both paid and volunteer roles you want to separate.
- In one line under Activities if it is unrelated and small.
- Leave it out if it adds nothing for this job and the page is full.
For a longer treatment of related parts of the page, see our guides to things to put on a resume, hobbies in a resume and first job resume writing. If you are applying for volunteer roles themselves, see the volunteer resume and the volunteer coordinator resume. For a gap, see the employment gaps guide.
What to leave out
- Every one-day event. Group small things in one line.
- Hours you cannot back. Round down, never up.
- Political or religious roles unless the job is connected to them and you want them seen.
- Duties with no results. "Helped at events" is thin. Say how many people and what changed.
Frequently asked questions
Should I put volunteer work on my resume?
Yes when it is relevant, recent or fills a gap. Write it like a paid job with the organisation, role, dates and results.
Where do I put volunteer work on a resume?
Under Experience if it is strong, in a separate Volunteer Experience section if you have both, or in one line under Activities if it is minor.
Can volunteer work replace work experience?
For a first job, yes in practice. Employers read it as experience when it shows reliability, responsibility and a result.
How do I list volunteer work with no dates or hours?
Give the year range and describe the regular commitment, such as every Saturday for two years. Do not invent hours.
Do I have to write the word volunteer?
Be honest about it. Label it volunteer in the title or organisation line, and let the bullets show the skills.
