Accounting Executive Resume: 5 Examples by Career Level

An accounting executive resume has to prove two things in the top third of page one: which ledgers or which finance function you own, and how clean and how fast you close them. The title means two different jobs. In many companies an accounting or accounts executive is the accountant who runs a set of books day to day; in others it means a senior leader, a controller or a chief accounting officer. The one constraint is that the reader decides which one you are from your first line, so say it there. Job duties below are quoted from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and O*NET, and the page has five complete resumes, from first accounts role to the top of the function. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
If your current resume says "responsible for accounting activities" and nothing else, it is describing every person in the department, including the one who left in March. Start with the most common version of the title.
Accounting executive resume for an accounts executive role
This is the hands-on version: payables, receivables, reconciliations and the monthly close for one entity or a group of them. The reader wants volume, systems and accuracy.

What the reader checks first on an accounting executive resume
The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the core of the work plainly: "Accountants and auditors prepare and examine financial records." O*NET OnLine lists the first task as "Prepare, examine, or analyze accounting records, financial statements, or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards." Your resume is a list of proof that you did exactly that, at a named scale.
Four things decide whether an accounting executive resume gets read past the summary:
- Scope. Entities, revenue, number of accounts, invoice volume or headcount you report to. "Two entities and around 900 invoices a month" places you instantly.
- Close speed. The working day you close on, and whether it moved while you owned it.
- Systems. The ERP and the tools by name: NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, BlackLine, Excel.
- Credentials. The BLS notes that accountants "typically need at least a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field to enter the occupation" and that becoming "a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA), may improve job prospects." Put the degree, the CPA status or the exam sections passed near the top.
Mid level accounting executive resume: running the close
At three to six years the title often stays the same while the job grows. You now own a close, review other people's work and answer the auditors.

Mid level: senior accounting executive, five years, one page (176 words)
Rachel Lindqvist, CPA Columbus, OH | (614) 555-0127 | rachel.lindqvist@email.com

Senior accounting executive resume: assistant controller and controller
Once you lead people, the resume changes shape. The reader wants the size of the team, the size of the books and what improved because you were there. The BLS page on financial managers says controllers "direct the preparation of financial reports that summarize and forecast an organization's financial position" and that "Often, controllers oversee the accounting, audit, and budget departments of their organization." Write your resume at that altitude.

Executive level: chief accounting officer or VP of accounting
At the top, the resume reads less like a job description and more like a record of decisions. The BLS notes that financial managers "typically need a bachelor's degree and 5 years or more of experience in another business or financial occupation," and nobody reaches this level on five. Show the whole arc in one line and spend the space on the last two roles.

How to write each section of an accounting executive resume
Summary. Three lines: title and years, the scope you own, one measured result. Leave out "detail oriented" and "team player"; every accounting resume says both, which is why neither registers.
Experience bullets. Start with the verb, add the volume, end with the result. "Reconcile four bank accounts monthly and clear unmatched items within the same close" beats "responsible for reconciliations" because it says how many and what happened.
Skills. Systems first, then standards (GAAP, ASC 606, ASC 842, SOX), then functions. O*NET lists tasks like "Establish tables of accounts and assign entries to proper accounts," and that kind of language maps cleanly to skills such as chart of accounts design.
Credentials. CPA with state, CMA if you hold it, and the exam sections passed if you are mid way. A candidate with two sections passed and a date for the third looks like someone in motion.
Length. One page up to about ten years, two pages for controllers and above. If you are on the edge, the two page resume guide shows what earns the second page, and the one page resume guide shows what to cut first.
Accounting executive resume keywords by level
- Accounts executive: accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliation, three way match, vendor management, accruals, month end close, 1099.
- Senior accounting executive: general ledger, close calendar, flux analysis, intercompany, fixed assets, audit support, review.
- Assistant controller and controller: consolidation, external audit, internal controls, ASC 606, ASC 842, team leadership, reporting package, budget.
- Chief accounting officer: external reporting, SEC filings, SOX 404, technical accounting, audit committee, shared services, global close.
Use the words that appear in the posting you are applying to, in the posting's own spelling. If the job ad says "accounts executive", that is the title in your headline, even if your employer called it "staff accountant".
Mistakes that sink an accounting executive resume
- Duties without numbers. "Handled payables" tells the reader nothing; "around 900 invoices a month" tells them your job.
- The wrong level of title. Applying for a controller role with a resume that leads with invoice processing. Lead with what you led.
- Hiding the CPA. Put it after your name and in the credentials section.
- No systems. An accounting resume without an ERP named looks like it was written before ERPs existed.
- Claims an interviewer can unpick. If you write "reduced the close by five days", be ready to say from what to what. The accounting interview questions page shows how those follow up questions go.
When you have the resume, the accountant cover letter shows how to turn your strongest number into the opening line of the letter.
Frequently asked questions
What is an accounting executive?
The title covers two jobs. In many companies an accounting or accounts executive is a hands-on accountant who runs payables, receivables, reconciliations and part of the close. In others, especially in US job ads for senior roles, an accounting executive means a leader such as a controller, VP of accounting or chief accounting officer. Read the posting's duties to see which one they mean.
What should an accounting executive resume include?
Your contact details, a three line summary with your scope and one result, experience bullets with volumes and systems, a skills section that names your ERP and standards, and your degree and CPA status. Senior resumes add team size, audit outcomes and the reporting you own. Every bullet should carry a number or a named system.
How long should an accounting executive resume be?
One page for accounts executives and accountants with up to about ten years of experience. Two pages for assistant controllers, controllers and executives, where team size, audits and acquisitions need room. A chief accounting officer can use an executive summary page followed by experience, as long as every line stays relevant to the role.
What skills should I list on an accounting executive resume?
List your ERP and tools first, such as NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Sage Intacct, BlackLine and Excel. Then standards and frameworks like GAAP, ASC 606, ASC 842 and SOX, then functions: reconciliation, close management, consolidation, audit support, budgeting. Leave soft skills out of the list and show them through results in your experience bullets.
Do I need a CPA to become an accounting executive?
Not for every role. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says accountants typically need a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, and that a CPA license may improve job prospects. For controller and chief accounting officer roles, a CPA is commonly listed in job postings, so if you are on that path, show your progress toward it on the resume.
