A social media manager cover letter is a one-page letter that shows how you grew an audience or an outcome, with the platform, the content and the numbers named, and says what you would do for this employer's accounts. The one constraint: the reader can open your accounts in a minute, so every claim has to survive a click. O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, lists "Post and update content on the company's Web site and social media outlets." among a public relations specialist's tasks, and its search marketing entry adds "Execute or manage social media campaigns to inform search marketing tactics." I am applying for the Social Media Manager position at Fieldstone Foods. For three years I have run Instagram, TikTok and email for Hearth Kitchenware, a home goods brand, growing the Instagram account from 18,000 to 61,000 followers and the email list from 4,000 to 15,000.

Two results are relevant to your posting. First, a recipe series I planned and shot with a local chef averaged 40,000 views per video, and the shop's product pages linked from them took the brand's best sales week of the year. Second, I built the content calendar and approval flow that moved us from posting three times a week to daily, with one editor and one part-time freelancer.

Your brand has strong product photography and little video. I would start with a short weekly series built around your pantry products and report reach, saves and click-throughs to the marketing director every Monday. My accounts are linked in my resume.

MIT's career office says to build a resume "that targets a specific position or employer" in its resume guide, and its advice to "Quantify if you can" applies even more to social media, where every result is a number. Purdue's Online Writing Lab adds the structure: "Focus each paragraph on one qualification that shows you are a good match for the job and organization." A strong letter does three things:

Names the platforms and the audience. The posting probably says Instagram, LinkedIn or TikTok. Match it.
Gives two or three results with numbers. Followers are the weakest metric. Reach, saves, link clicks, leads and sales are stronger, and a time period makes each believable.
Says what you would do first. One or two specific moves for this brand, from looking at their feed.

Each letter is complete and can be adapted. Names and brands are invented.

What to leave out

"Passionate about social media". Everyone who applies is. Show the feed.
Vanity metrics only. A follower count without reach, clicks or sales invites the question "so what?".
A list of platforms. Name the two or three the job needs.
Claims about trends you cannot show. A post that went viral is a result only if you can name the number.
Disrespect for the employer's current feed. Suggest what to try, not what is wrong.
