A good CV for a support worker says, in the first three lines, who you have supported, in what setting, and which checks and training you already hold: your DBS, your Care Certificate or diploma, and whether you drive. The constraint is that support work is hired on trust, so the CV has to prove you are safe and reliable before it proves anything else. The National Careers Service says it plainly: you will need to "pass enhanced background checks". Below are six complete support worker CV examples, tagged by level, and a fill-in template. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, a qualified care worker who has hired care staff and been hired as one.

Every support worker CV in the pile says "caring, compassionate and patient". The manager reading it already assumed that, because you applied for a job that involves showers at seven in the morning. What she is looking for is the line that tells her you have done it.

Support worker CV with no experience

You have more experience than you think. The National Careers Service is clear: "Time spent caring for someone you know also counts as having experience in a caring role." Put that caring first, then any volunteering, then the job you have now.

Support worker CV template

Copy this CV template for a support worker and replace each line in brackets. Keep it to two pages at most, and one page if you are applying for your first role.

What care managers check on a support worker CV

Safety first. Support workers need a DBS check, and GOV.UK explains that an enhanced check "shows the same as a standard check plus any information held by local police that’s considered relevant to the role". If you already have one on the Update Service, put it in your header.

Training they can see. The Care Certificate sets the standards "that health and social care workers adhere to in their daily working life". If you hold it, or a Level 2 or Level 3 diploma, name it in your profile. If you do not, say you are willing to complete it.

The daily tasks, in your words. The National Careers Service lists what the job involves, such as "help with washing, dressing and personal care" and "keep client records and care plans up to date". Your bullets should cover the same ground, with the setting and how many people you supported.

A CV that matches the advert. The National Careers Service CV guide says "You should tailor your CV to the job or opportunity you’re applying for." If the advert says autism, PBS and community outings, those words go in your profile. Leave out your date of birth and photo; see what not to include on a UK CV.

Many care jobs also ask for a supporting statement, and our care worker supporting statement shows how to write one. When you get the interview, prepare with these support worker interview questions. Moving into nursing later? The nursing CV example shows what changes. Applying to a US employer instead? Use our disability support worker resume guide. Frequently asked questions

What should I put on my CV for a support worker job?

Your contact details, a three line profile, your care experience with the setting and the people you supported, any unpaid caring or volunteering, your training such as the Care Certificate or a diploma, and whether you have a DBS and a driving licence. Match the words in the advert and keep it to two pages.

How do I write a support worker CV with no experience?

Lead with any caring you have done for family or friends, because the National Careers Service counts it as experience in a caring role. Add volunteering, then your current job, written around people skills: calming upset customers, following procedures, working shifts. Say you are willing to complete the Care Certificate and a DBS check.

What skills should a support worker put on a CV?

Personal care, medication administration, record keeping, safeguarding, moving and handling, and person-centred support planning are the core skills. Add communication methods such as Makaton or PECS if you use them. Back each skill with a bullet that shows where you used it, rather than listing adjectives like caring or patient.

How long should a support worker CV be?

One page is enough for a first support worker job. With a few years of experience, two pages is standard in the UK. A senior support worker can use two full pages, but older roles should shrink to one line each. Anything beyond two pages usually means the profile and bullets need cutting.

Do I need qualifications to be a support worker?

Not always. The National Careers Service says you can apply directly and receive on-the-job training, and many employers offer training to applicants with the right personal qualities. If you do not hold the Care Certificate yet, say you are willing to complete it, and add a Level 2 or Level 3 diploma when you have one.
