The dental assistant skills for a resume that get read are the specific ones: chairside assisting, sterilization, x-rays, charting, scheduling and the practice software you use, each shown in a bullet with a volume or an outcome. Below are six complete examples, from a new graduate to a lead assistant, checked in November 2026. Each has a skills block grouped by type and the job bullets that prove it. Take the one closest to you and change the details to match what you have actually done.
A skills list of "teamwork, communication, detail-oriented" could belong to a dental assistant, a barista or a bus driver. Dentists hire the person who has already handed over the right instrument before being asked. Show that person.
Example 1: a new dental assistant graduate
If you have just finished a program, the clinical rotation is your job history. Count what you did: patients, procedures, x-rays.

What the sources agree on
The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET database opens its dental assistant profile with: "Perform limited clinical duties under the direction of a dentist." Its task list reads like a skills checklist: "Prepare patient, sterilize or disinfect instruments, set up instrument trays, prepare materials, or assist dentist during dental procedures." It also lists "Schedule appointments, prepare bills and receive payment for dental services, complete insurance forms, and maintain records, manually or using computer." So clinical and front-office skills both belong on the page, in the proportions the posting asks for.
MIT's career office gives the method in its resume guide: "Whenever possible, include how you performed tasks, not just what you did." For a skill like radiography, the how is digital or film, bitewings or full-mouth series, and how many a week.
Harvard's career services says in its resume guide that a resume "should highlight your strongest assets and skills, and differentiate you from other candidates seeking similar positions." Lead with the skills the posting names first, and put the rest after.

How to build your own skills block
- Group by type. Clinical, radiography, infection control, records and software, people. Six to eight groups is too many; four or five is right.
- Order by the posting. Put first what the job post lists first.
- Add one number somewhere. Patients a day, procedures, x-rays or team size.
- Name the software. Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental or Curve, whichever you have used.
- List real credentials. CDA, RDA, expanded functions certificates and BLS only if you hold them, with the state if it matters.

What to leave out
- Skills with no setting. "Sterilization" alone says little. Add the setting or the protocol.
- Duties you were never allowed to perform. Expanded functions depend on your state and certification.
- A long list of soft skills. Pick two and show them in a bullet.
- Software you have not used. Name only what you could use on day one.
Frequently asked questions
What skills should a dental assistant put on a resume?
Chairside assisting, sterilization and infection control, radiography, charting, scheduling, and the practice software you use, plus any certificate you hold.
What are the top skills for a dental assistant with no experience?
Training-based skills such as instrument setup, sterilization and x-rays, plus soft skills backed by an example from school, a job or an externship.

Only list certifications you hold, such as CDA, RDA or BLS. Requirements for expanded functions differ by state, so check yours.
