Internal Resume Example: 5 Samples for a Promotion or Move

An internal resume example looks like a normal resume with three changes: your current company sits at the top with every title you have held there stacked underneath, the summary names the internal role you want, and the bullets prove results the hiring manager can check with your current boss. The constraint is that the reader may already know you, so you cannot rely on reputation and you cannot inflate anything. Coursera's guide to internal applications advises writing it fresh: "it's best not to rehash your current resume, especially as the hiring manager may already be familiar with it." Below are the structure and five complete internal resume examples. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Applying for a job in your own building feels like auditioning for a play you are already in. Everyone knows your lines, and somehow that makes it harder.
What makes an internal resume different
The format is the same reverse chronological resume you would send anywhere. The weight moves. Coursera lists what to stress: "your advancement within the organization, your quantifiable achievements, and how your length of service could benefit the proposed position."
- Put the company name once, then stack each internal title with its own dates and bullets. This shows promotions at a glance.
- Write the summary for the new role, not the one you have now.
- Use the internal names for teams, systems and projects, because the reader knows them, but write the result in plain numbers.
- Add internal training, awards and stretch projects. They are proof you were already growing toward this job.
- Shorten older outside jobs to one line each unless they prove a skill the new role needs.

How to stack several titles at one company
Stacking is the single most useful trick on an internal resume. The company appears once, in bold or capitals, and each title under it has its own dates. The reader sees a promotion history in two seconds instead of piecing it together from repeated company names.
Keep the most bullets under your current title and two or three under each earlier one. If two roles were nearly identical, combine them into one line such as "Associate and Senior Associate, 2021 to 2024".
Internal resume example for a lateral move

Before you send it
Tell your current manager before you apply, so they hear it from you and not from HR. Augsburg University's career center suggests "scheduling a meeting with your current supervisor to discuss your career goals" and then following the formal process, "such as submitting an updated resume and a strong cover letter." For that letter, our internal cover letter guide has six examples. CareerOneStop adds a rule that applies inside the company too: "Use the exact terms in your resume." Copy the posting's wording, even if you know the team calls the job something else.
For more on writing the summary at the top, see our resume summary examples, and for the interview that follows, our job interview tips. If the internal move is a promotion, our interview questions for job promotion page has six full answers to the questions an internal panel asks. CVBooster can help you build the internal version: you need an account, the free plan lets you fill in your resume by hand and see your ATS score and the keywords you are missing, and the AI tailoring, templates and the finished file are Pro.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a resume for an internal job?
Usually yes. Even when the hiring manager knows you, HR often needs a resume to compare candidates fairly, and other people on the panel may not know your work. A short, targeted internal resume also shows you take the move seriously rather than expecting it because you already work there.
How do I list multiple positions at the same company on a resume?
Write the company name once, then list each title underneath with its own dates and bullets, newest first. Put most of your bullets under the current title. This stacked layout makes promotions obvious and saves space compared with repeating the company for every role.
Should an internal resume include jobs outside the company?
Keep them, but shorten them. Give older outside jobs one line each with title, employer and dates, unless one proves a skill the new role needs, in which case add one or two bullets. Most of the page should be about what you have done at your current company.
What should the summary say on a resume for an internal promotion?
Name the role you are applying for, your time at the company, your current scope and the one or two results that fit the new job best. For example: "Operations manager with eight years at the company, applying for Director of Operations, runs two sites and 140 staff."
Can I use internal jargon on an internal resume?
Use internal names for systems, teams and projects, because the reader knows them, but explain results in plain numbers. Remember that HR or a panel member from another department may also read it, so avoid acronyms that only your own team uses.
