The best maintain synonyms for a resume are serviced, updated, upheld, retained, stabilized and documented, picked by what you actually kept going. The one constraint: "maintained" tells the reader that something existed and you did not break it, which is the lowest bar a job has. The Cambridge Dictionary defines the word as "to continue to have; to keep in existence, or not allow to become less". Below are 30 verbs in six groups, seven before and after bullets from entry level to senior, and the cases where "maintained" is the right verb. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

"Maintained records. Maintained equipment. Maintained relationships." Three bullets, one verb, and the reader cannot tell a filing clerk from a plant engineer.

One bullet, fixed before you read further

The usual case is a bullet that leaves out what was kept, how, and what would have happened if it were not. A mid-level facilities coordinator.

Mid level: Facilities coordinator, office building, complete example, 52 words

Mid level: Facilities coordinator, office building (52 words)

Before - Maintained building systems and maintained vendor relationships

After - Serviced HVAC, fire panels and elevators on a fixed calendar across a 12-floor office building, with no unplanned shutdown in two years - Retained the same four vendors for three contract cycles by paying invoices within terms and logging every call-out

Two verbs replaced one, because two different things were being kept going. That is the method: one verb for each thing you did.

30 maintain synonyms, grouped by what you kept going

"Maintain" hides six different jobs. Choose the group, then the verb.

The O*NET occupation database lists the real tasks of an office manager under its first-line office supervisor entry. One of its tasks reads "Maintain records pertaining to inventory, personnel, orders, supplies, or machine maintenance." That is the job-description verb, but on a resume you would write recorded, tracked or reconciled, depending on what you actually did with the record.

Before and after, one rewrite per group

Each pair keeps the same job and the same facts. Only the verb and the detail change.

Why "maintained" costs you the interview

MIT's career office tells applicants to "Record accomplishments and contributions, not just responsibilities" in its resume guide. "Maintained" is the standard responsibility verb. It says you were present while something existed.

The fix is to ask a question the verb does not answer: what would have gone wrong if you had not? If the answer is a missed deadline, a safety finding or a lost client, that is your bullet.

For other tired verbs, see our page on resume synonyms. For the verb behind "was responsible for", the resume action verbs page has more options, and our oversaw synonym page covers the supervisory sense.

Frequently asked questions

What is another word for maintain on a resume?

Use the verb that names what you did. Serviced or repaired fit equipment, updated or reconciled fit records, upheld or ensured fit standards, retained or cultivated fit clients, and stabilized fits a level you held steady. Then add the detail: how many items, how often and what the result was.

How do you say maintained records on a resume?

Replace "maintained records" with the action and the scale. "Updated 300 patient files weekly and corrected every error before billing" tells the reader how many, how often and why it mattered. Use recorded, updated, reconciled, tracked or audited, depending on what you did with them.

Is maintained a weak verb for a resume?

It is a weak verb when it appears alone, because it describes a state rather than an action. It is acceptable when the posting uses it or when the object is a standard term such as a license or a grade point average. In most other cases a more specific verb will serve better.

What can I use instead of maintained relationships?

Retained, cultivated, nurtured, managed and sustained all work. Retained is the strongest when you can show clients stayed, as in "Retained the top six clients over four years." Cultivated fits relationship building, and managed fits an account list. Add a number or a duration to make it credible.
