Cover Letter Examples for a Manager Position: 6 Samples

Cover letter examples for a manager position that work all do the same three things: they name the team and the numbers you were responsible for, they show one problem you fixed through other people, and they say why you want this team in particular. A manager is hired to get results through staff, so a letter that only lists your own tasks reads like an application for the job below. CareerOneStop, the US Department of Labor's career site, sets the length: "A good letter can be about 200-400 words, with just 3-4 short paragraphs." Each sample below fits that range. They run from a first time manager to a general manager, checked against O*NET and CareerOneStop guidance in October 2026. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Sample cover letter for a first manager position

Your first management job is usually won on proof that you already lead without the title: training new hires, covering for the manager, running a shift. Name those moments and the result. If you are applying for an internal promotion, say so in the first line.

Entry level: team lead applying for a first manager position (175 words)

Dear Ms. Patel,

I am applying for the Customer Support Manager position posted on your careers page. For the past two years I have been the team lead for eight agents on the billing queue at Northwind Utilities, and since March I have covered for our manager during her leave.

In that time I ran the weekly schedule, held one to one meetings with each agent and trained four new hires. When our first contact resolution dropped after a billing system change, I wrote a short troubleshooting guide with two senior agents and coached the team on it. Within six weeks the queue was back to its earlier level and repeat calls fell.

I want this role because your team handles both billing and service calls, and I have worked both. I am ready to own the schedule, the hiring and the results, not just cover them.

My resume is attached. I would welcome a conversation about how your team is measured and where you want it to be in a year.

Sincerely, Jordan Reyes

Store manager cover letter example

Retail district managers read for sales, payroll and people. O*NET's general and operations managers profile includes "Store Manager" among its job titles and lists the duty "Prepare staff work schedules and assign specific duties." Show that you can run the schedule against the payroll budget and still hit the sales plan.

Dear Mr. Okafor,

I am writing to apply for the Store Manager position at your Westfield Mall location. I have been Assistant Store Manager at Harbor Outfitters for three years, in a store with 22 associates and a sales plan of about $3.4 million a year.

I build the weekly schedule against our payroll budget, run the Sunday inventory counts and open or close five days a week. Last year I took over hiring for the holiday season. We brought on twelve seasonal associates, kept nine of them into January and finished the fourth quarter above plan.

Your store sits in the same mall format I know well, with heavy weekend traffic and a small stockroom. I know how to staff for that and keep the floor covered at peak hours.

I would be glad to walk the store with you and talk through how I would plan the next quarter.

Sincerely, Alicia Moreno

Restaurant manager cover letter sample

Restaurant owners hire managers to protect three numbers: food cost, labor cost and the guest reviews. Put at least two of them in your letter. Mention food safety certification, because many states require a certified food protection manager on site.

Dear Chef Romano,

I am applying for the General Manager position at Trattoria Lucia. I have spent four years as Assistant General Manager at Copper Kettle Bistro, a 140 seat restaurant with about 45 staff in the front and back of house.

I run the schedule and the weekly inventory, place the orders with our three main suppliers and lead the pre shift meeting. When our food cost climbed last spring, I worked with the kitchen manager to change portion specs on our top ten dishes and cut waste on the prep line. We brought food cost back to target in two months without dropping a menu item.

I hold a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate, and I have handled two health inspections with no critical findings. I want to join a restaurant where the owner is in the kitchen and the menu matters, and that is how your team works.

I would love to come in for a working interview on a busy night.

Best regards, Daniel Kim

Operations manager cover letter example

Operations managers are hired to make a process faster, cheaper or safer. Choose the one change you led that best matches the posting, and give the before and after. Keep the rest for the interview. If you are taking that operations experience into consulting instead, our consultant cover letter examples show how to tell the same project as a consulting case.

Dear Hiring Team at Summit Logistics,

I am applying for the Operations Manager position at your Reno fulfillment center. I am currently Shift Supervisor at Cascade Distribution, leading 35 associates across receiving, picking and shipping on the night shift.

Our shift missed its truck cutoff about twice a week when I started. I mapped where the orders were stalling, moved two people from receiving to packing between midnight and 3 a.m. and set up a simple board showing orders left against time left. Missed cutoffs dropped to one or two a month, and we had no recordable injuries that year.

I also run our new hire training and safety walks, and I partner with the day supervisor on a shared handover sheet so nothing gets lost between shifts.

Your posting mentions a new building opening next year. I have helped set up two new pick zones and would welcome the chance to help launch a site from the start. Thank you for your time; my resume is attached.

Sincerely, Kevin Brooks

Office manager cover letter sample

Office managers keep a business running: vendors, budgets, people and the office itself. The owner or managing partner reading your letter wants someone who will take things off their desk. Show what you took off someone else's desk before.

Mid level: office administrator applying for an office manager position (151 words)

Dear Dr. Nguyen,

I am applying for the Office Manager position at Lakeside Family Dental. I have worked for five years at Pine Street Physical Therapy, first as front desk coordinator and for the last two as office administrator for a team of 16.

I handle payroll inputs, vendor contracts, supply ordering and the front desk schedule. When our insurance claim denials started piling up, I set up a weekly review of rejected claims with our billing company and trained the front desk to check eligibility the day before each visit. The backlog was cleared in three months, and the owner no longer spends her evenings on it.

I know the rhythm of a healthcare office, and I enjoy being the person staff come to when something breaks.

I would welcome the chance to meet you and learn what you would most like taken off your plate.

Kind regards, Samantha Lewis

General manager cover letter example

At senior level the letter is shorter on tasks and longer on judgment. Name the business you ran, its size, a turnaround or growth story and the kind of leader you are. A board or owner wants to know how you think, so give one decision and why you made it. If the job you want is one level down, running a shift rather than a department, use our application letter for a supervisor position instead.

Senior level: general manager applying to lead a larger business unit (156 words)

Dear Ms. Harrington,

I am applying for the General Manager position for your Midwest region. For the last six years I have been General Manager of Prairie Building Supply, a $40 million business with four branches and 120 employees, reporting to the owner group.

When I arrived, two of the four branches were losing money. I closed the smaller one, moved its best staff and accounts to the nearest branch and invested in a delivery fleet so contractors could order without driving in. The business returned to profit in the second year and has grown every year since.

I lead through clear numbers and regular branch visits. Each branch manager owns their plan, and we review it together every month. I spend at least one day a week in a branch, not in my office.

I would welcome a conversation about what you want the Midwest region to look like in three years.

Sincerely, Michael Torres

How to write a cover letter for a manager position

Use four short paragraphs. CareerOneStop's cover letter page advises for the first paragraph: "State the job you're applying for. Mention how you learned of the opening." Then:

Address a real person. CareerOneStop's advice is to "Address the letter to a specific person whenever possible." If you cannot find a name, use the hiring manager's job title. Our guide to how to write a cover letter covers each paragraph in more depth, and our post on to whom it may concern has alternatives.

Manager cover letter mistakes to avoid

The biggest mistake is writing about your own work instead of your team's. A manager letter full of "I processed" and "I answered" says you are still an individual contributor. Write "my team" and give the team result.

Other common problems: repeating the resume line by line, using a number with no comparison (sales of $2 million means little without the target), and sending the same letter to every company. If you need a tighter version, our short cover letter examples show how to cut to 150 words, and our professional cover letter examples cover other office roles. For role specific letters, see the project manager cover letter, marketing manager cover letter and site manager cover letter pages.

Frequently asked questions

What should a cover letter for a manager position say?

Your current role and team size, one result you achieved through your team, why you want this specific team or company, and a clear next step. Keep it to three or four paragraphs and between 200 and 400 words, and address a named person whenever you can find one.

How do I write a cover letter for a manager position with no management experience?

Lead with the leadership you already do without the title: training new hires, running a shift, covering for your manager or leading a project. Give one result from that work. The first sample on this page shows a team lead applying for a first manager position this way.

How long should a manager cover letter be?

Between 200 and 400 words, in three or four short paragraphs, which matches CareerOneStop's guidance. Senior letters can be at the shorter end because your resume carries more of the detail. If your letter runs past one page, cut the paragraph that repeats your resume.

Should I include numbers in a manager cover letter?

Yes, but only the ones that matter for the job: team size, budget, sales, cost or a before and after. One or two numbers per letter are enough. Each number should come with a comparison, such as against plan or against last year, so the reader can judge it.

How do I end a cover letter for a manager position?

Say your resume is attached, thank the reader and suggest a specific next step, such as a call, a store walk or a working interview. Close with Sincerely or Best regards and your full name. Avoid ending with a vague line like hoping to hear back at some point.
