Apprenticeship Cover Letter: 6 UK Examples for Every Level

An apprenticeship cover letter has one job: to show the employer you will turn up, learn fast and stay for the whole programme, using evidence from school, part-time work or hobbies rather than a career you have not had yet. The constraint is that an apprenticeship is a real job with training attached. GOV.UK says apprentices "get time for training and study related to your role (at least 20% of your normal working hours)", so the employer is hiring someone to work four days and study one, and wants to see you can handle both. Below are six complete apprenticeship cover letter examples, checked in October 2026: a school leaver, an IT apprentice, an electrical apprentice, a degree apprentice, an adult changing career, and a short email version. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

The advert says "no experience needed". The application form then asks you to describe a time you showed leadership in a professional setting. You are sixteen. Your professional setting was a Saturday job at a bakery. That is fine. Use the bakery.

School leaver, level 2 or 3

Most apprenticeship applicants are applying straight from school or college. Your evidence is your subjects, your attendance, anything practical you have done and any part-time job.

School leaver: level 3 business administration apprenticeship (186 words)

Dear Mrs Patel,

I am applying for the Business Administration Apprenticeship at Hartley & Co Accountants, advertised on Find an apprenticeship. I am finishing Year 11 at Oakfield Academy and expect grade 6 or above in English, Maths and Business.

For the past year I have worked Saturdays at Greggs on Market Street. I open the till, take deliveries and count the float at the end of the day, and my manager now leaves me to cash up on my own. It has taught me that being reliable is mostly about turning up early and checking your own work before someone else has to.

At school I am the treasurer of the Young Enterprise team. We made a profit selling refillable water bottles, and I kept the accounts in a spreadsheet the teacher used as an example for the next year group.

I want an apprenticeship rather than college because I learn best by doing, and your advert says your apprentices work with real clients from the first month. I am available for interview after 3pm on weekdays.

Yours sincerely,

Ella Thompson 07700 900 812 ella.thompson@example.com

IT apprenticeship after A levels

For IT, show something you have built or fixed. A home network, a website for a relative, a Raspberry Pi project: any of them counts, as long as you can explain what went wrong and how you sorted it.

Post-18: IT support apprenticeship, level 3 (174 words)

Dear Hiring Team,

I am applying for the IT Support Technician Apprenticeship at Brookfield NHS Trust. I am completing A levels in Computer Science, Maths and Physics at Ridgeway Sixth Form, predicted A, B, B.

Outside school I run the IT for my family's café. When the card machine kept dropping its connection at lunchtime, I traced it to the guest Wi-Fi sharing the same band, set up a separate network for the till, and wrote a one-page guide so my mum could restart everything without me. It has not dropped since.

I also completed the Google IT Support course on my own time, which covered networking, operating systems and troubleshooting, and I built a small home lab on a second-hand PC to practise Active Directory.

Your advert mentions supporting clinical staff on busy wards. I am used to explaining technical problems to people who just want them fixed, and I stay calm when they are not. I would welcome the chance to talk at interview.

Yours sincerely,

Ryan Ahmed 07700 900 845 ryan.ahmed@example.com

Electrical or construction apprenticeship

Trades employers want to see that you are safe, practical and not put off by early starts. Mention any hands-on work, your maths grade, and how you get to site.

School leaver: electrical installation apprenticeship (161 words)

Dear Mr Wilson,

I am applying for the Electrical Installation Apprenticeship with Wilson Electrical Services. I am 16, finishing Year 11 at St Mary's School, and I expect grade 5 in Maths and grade 6 in Physics.

I have wanted to do this since I helped my uncle, who is a plasterer, on a house renovation last summer. I spent three weeks on site carrying materials, clearing up and watching the electrician run the first fix. I asked him a lot of questions, and he told me to apply for an apprenticeship rather than college.

At school I took Design and Technology, where I wired a working LED lamp from a circuit diagram, and I am the person my family calls when something needs putting together.

I live in Bramley, ten minutes from your yard, and I can start at 7am. I am happy to do any test or trial day you use.

Yours sincerely,

Callum Hughes 07700 900 876 callum.hughes@example.com

Degree apprenticeship

Degree apprenticeships are competitive, and the letter reads more like a graduate application. Show academic strength, one technical project and a clear reason for choosing this employer.

Complete Post-18: engineering degree apprenticeship, level 6 example, 173 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Post-18: engineering degree apprenticeship, level 6 (173 words)

Dear Recruitment Team,

I am applying for the Mechanical Engineering Degree Apprenticeship at Aldermoor Aerospace. I am studying A levels in Maths, Further Maths and Physics, with predicted grades of A*, A, A.

For my Extended Project I designed and 3D printed a gearbox for a model wind turbine, then tested three gear ratios to find the one that produced the most power at low wind speeds. The first two prints failed because I had not allowed for shrinkage, which taught me more about tolerances than anything in class.

Last summer I spent a week of work experience at a local precision engineering firm, shadowing a CNC programmer and checking parts against drawings.

I want a degree apprenticeship because I want to see the engineering on a real aircraft while I learn the theory, and your programme rotates apprentices through design, manufacturing and test. That rotation is the reason I am applying to Aldermoor rather than to university.

Thank you for considering my application.

Yours faithfully,

Priya Sharma 07700 900 903 priya.sharma@example.com

Adult apprentice changing career

GOV.UK puts the age rule as "16 or over" and gives no upper age, so if you are 30 and changing career, you can apply. Use your work history as evidence of reliability and say why you are retraining.

Adult: career changer into a level 3 accounting apprenticeship (166 words)

Dear Ms Ward,

I am applying for the Accounts Assistant Apprenticeship at Ward Bennett. I am 31 and I have worked in retail for twelve years, the last five as an assistant store manager at Boots, and I want to retrain in accounting.

The part of my current job I enjoy most is the numbers. I reconcile the store's takings every day, investigate any discrepancy over five pounds, and prepare the weekly wage and stock reports for the area manager. Last year I found a recurring till error that had been miscounting refunds, and the area manager rolled my fix out to eleven stores.

I have completed the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting through evening study, and an apprenticeship is the way I can carry on learning while working full time.

I understand the apprenticeship pay is lower than my current salary. I have planned for that, and I would rather earn less now and qualify properly.

Yours sincerely,

Daniel Brooks 07700 900 934 daniel.brooks@example.com

Short email to a training provider or employer

Some apprenticeships are applied for through a training provider, or by email with a CV attached. Keep this one to five sentences and put the vacancy in the subject line.

Subject: Application, Dental Nurse Apprenticeship, reference DN-0426

Dear Sarah,

Please find my CV attached for the Dental Nurse Apprenticeship advertised on Find an apprenticeship. I am 17, studying Health and Social Care at Kingsway College, and I have two years of Saturday work on reception at a busy hair salon, booking appointments and handling payments.

I would like to work in dentistry because I enjoyed helping nervous customers relax at the salon, and I want a job where that matters every day. I can start in September.

Thank you for your time.

Kind regards,

Prospects describes apprenticeships as "a great way to gain hands-on experience while studying towards an industry recognised qualification and earning a salary", so say which of those three matters most to you and why. Before you apply, read the conditions on GOV.UK's become an apprentice page, including the apprentice pay and conditions, where GOV.UK states: "The current National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice is £8 per hour." Rates change each April, so check the page on the day you apply. Prospects' apprenticeships guide covers the levels in more depth.

I wrote adverts for my own company, and when I hired someone with no experience I was not looking for experience. I was looking for proof they would show up and care. The posting is the brief: if it says "reliable" and "good with customers", give one example of each and stop.

Mistakes that get apprenticeship letters binned

For the CV that goes with the letter, the CV personal statement with no experience guide has eight UK examples, and what not to include on a UK CV covers the rest. If you are applying by email, see the job application email templates. For the general method, read how to write a cover letter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a cover letter for an apprenticeship?

Say which apprenticeship you are applying for and where you saw it, then give one example of reliability from school, a part-time job or a hobby. Add something practical you have done that relates to the role, explain why you want an apprenticeship with this employer, and close with your availability. Keep it under one page.

What should I put in a cover letter for an apprenticeship with no experience?

Use school, part-time work, volunteering, sport, caring for a family member and projects you have done at home. Employers are not expecting work experience in the field. They want to see that you turn up, take responsibility and are genuinely interested in the job, so give one specific example of each.

How long should an apprenticeship cover letter be?

Three to five short paragraphs, around 150 to 200 words, on one page. If you are applying by email with a CV attached, five sentences in the email body is enough. Employers reading dozens of applications for one vacancy read short letters in full.

Do you need a cover letter for an apprenticeship?

Many apprenticeship applications ask for a supporting statement or cover letter, and some use an online form with questions instead. If the form has a box for why you want the role, treat it as your cover letter. If you are applying by email, always include a short one.

Can adults write a cover letter for an apprenticeship?

Yes. GOV.UK lists the age requirement as 16 or over and gives no upper age, so adults changing career apply too. Use your work history as evidence of reliability, explain why you are retraining, and show you have thought about the pay, because employers sometimes worry an adult apprentice will leave for a higher salary.
