RN Resume: Two Complete Examples and Every Section

An RN resume is decided in the top third of page one: license status, specialty, and one number that shows the size of your patient load. Everything else supports those three. A new graduate resume leads with clinical hours, where an experienced one leads with unit and acuity. License and certification wording below is quoted from NCSBN, ANCC and O*NET OnLine, fetched in September 2026. Two complete resumes follow, new graduate and experienced, then every section written at both levels. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, a qualified care worker who has hired care staff and been hired as one.

License and certification wording, quoted
Write the credential the way the issuing body writes it, because that is how a recruiter and a screening system both search for it.
NCSBN describes the licensure exam plainly: "The NCLEX uses computerized adaptive testing (CAT) technology to deliver the exam, ensuring a valid and reliable measurement of nursing competence", on its exams page. On a resume, write "NCLEX-RN passed" with the month and year, not "nursing boards completed".
Board certification has a fixed cycle. ANCC states that "ANCC certification is renewed every five years through completion of continuing education and professional development activities that demonstrate continuing competence", on its certification renewal page. Put the expiry year on the resume so nobody has to ask.
The pay number to hold, with its source
O*NET OnLine records "Median wages (2025) $46.90 hourly, $97,550 annual" for registered nurses, with "Employment (2024) 3,391,000 employees" and growth described as "Faster than average (5% to 6%)", on its registered nurses summary.
That is a national median, not an offer. Hold it in the negotiation, and ask which source and which year any lower figure comes from.
The numbers that make an RN bullet work
Four numbers do most of the work on a nursing resume, and almost nobody includes all four.
- Patient load. Four patients on days, five on nights, seven if you were charge.
- Unit size and type. A 32-bed med-surg unit is a different job from an eight-bed ICU.
- Volume. Clinical hours for a new graduate, years on the unit for everyone else.
- A before and after. Falls from nine to four a quarter, missed screenings from fourteen to two.
If you have none of the four, the bullet is describing the job description rather than your work in it.
Length and format
One page for a new graduate, two at most for an experienced nurse, reverse chronological, no photo. Some employers set the limit for you: the USAJOBS Help Center states that you "must upload or build a resume that is two pages or less and meets all requirements listed in the job announcement", on its resume help page.

What gets an RN resume screened out
- License status missing, so a recruiter cannot tell if you can start.
- Certification acronyms with no issuing body and no expiry year.
- No patient load and no unit size anywhere on the page.
- "Fast paced environment" and "high quality care", which describe every nursing job ever posted.
- A skills list with no charting system named.
- Three pages for four years of experience.
Tip: Put license, specialty and one number in the first three lines. That is the part a nurse recruiter reads before deciding whether to read the rest.
Frequently asked questions
What should an RN resume include?
Name and credentials, contact details, a three-line summary, licenses and certifications with expiry years, experience with patient load and unit size, education, and a skills block naming your charting system. Put licenses high on page one, because that is the first thing a nurse recruiter checks.
How do I write a nursing resume summary?
Three lines: license status, specialty with unit size or clinical hours, and the position you want. "Registered nurse with six years on a 32-bed med-surg unit and two as charge nurse, moving to critical care" does more than any paragraph about dedication or compassion.
What skills should I put on an RN resume?
Split them into clinical, systems and leadership. Clinical means assessment, telemetry, IV, wound care and the bundles you run. Systems means Epic, Meditech, barcode medication administration and SBAR handover. Leadership means charge shifts, preceptorship and any audit you owned.
How long should an RN resume be?
One page as a new graduate, two as an experienced nurse. A third page is only justified by publications, research or a long certification list. Federal applications cap it at two pages, and most hospital recruiters read the first half of page one anyway.
How do I list nursing certifications on a resume?
Use the issuing body's own name, then the credential, then the expiry year. "Basic Life Support, American Heart Association, valid to July 2027" is complete. ANCC board certification runs on a five-year renewal cycle, so always show the year it expires.
How do I make an RN resume ATS friendly?
Use one column, standard section headings, no tables and no text inside images. Spell out credentials once in full and once as the acronym, such as Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse and CMSRN. Save as a PDF unless the employer asks for a Word file.
