Self Employment on a Resume: 6 Examples You Can Copy

By · Published · Updated

6 min read

List self employment on a resume as a normal job: a title, your business name (or your own name) as the employer, your city and state, the dates, and bullets that show clients, projects and results. Do not write "self-employed" in the employer line, because it describes your tax status, not who you worked for. Below are six complete entries for a freelancer, a consultant, a tradesperson, an online seller, a gig worker and a business owner, plus where the entry goes and how to handle gaps and references.

Self-employment is the one job where you were also the HR department, the sales team and the accountant. The resume should say so, because it is true and useful. What it should not say is "self-motivated entrepreneur" and nothing else.

The basic entry

The entry has the same parts as any other job. Only the employer line changes.

What the sources agree on

The IRS defines the term on its self-employed individuals tax center: "Generally, you are self-employed if any of the following apply to you." It then lists carrying on a trade or business as a sole proprietor or independent contractor, or as a partner. That is the legal label. On a resume, the useful part is the business you ran, not the tax category.

MIT's career office says in its resume guide: "Record accomplishments and contributions, not just responsibilities." For self-employment, that means clients served, projects delivered and money or time saved, because the reader cannot call a boss to confirm them.

Berkeley's career center tells applicants to "Generate a list of accomplishments" for each section, in its resume advice. Harvard's career services adds in its resume guide that resume language should be "Fact-based (quantify and qualify)". With no employer to vouch for you, the numbers do that work.

Frequently asked questions

How do I list self-employment on a resume?

Give it a title, a business name as the employer, location, dates and three to five bullets on clients, projects and results. Place it with your other jobs in reverse order.

Should I write self-employed as the employer?

No. It describes your tax status, not an organization. Use your business name, or your own name with "(freelance)".

How do I show self-employment with no business name?

Write your name and the type of work, such as Alex Rivera, Freelance Writer. The title, the clients and the dates tell the story.

Does self-employment count as work experience?

Yes. Employers expect it to be listed like any other job, with dates and results.

How can I prove self-employment?

Use numbers (clients, projects, revenue you can document), link to a portfolio or a business page, and offer a client or partner as a reference.
