How to Add Contract Work to Resume: 5 Examples by Situation

How to add contract work to resume pages: list it in your experience like any other job and mark it "Contract". Give your title, the company you did the work for, the agency or your own business if there was one, and the dates, so nobody reads several short roles as job hopping. Then group short contracts under one heading when they are similar. The one constraint is honesty about who employed you, because a background check will show the agency, not the client. The IRS definition of an independent contractor, quoted below, helps you label it right. Five complete examples follow. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Three six-month contracts in eighteen months is a career. On a resume with no labels, it looks like you were asked to leave three times, and somebody in a meeting says "flight risk" without reading the dates.
The basic format for contract roles
Every contract entry needs five things:
- Your job title, the one you actually did, such as Data Analyst or Project Manager.
- The client, the company where you did the work.
- The employer of record, if different, the staffing agency or consulting firm that paid you, or your own business name.
- Dates, month and year, so short contracts are clear.
- The word "Contract" next to the title or dates, and the reason it ended if it is not obvious, such as "contract completed" or "fixed-term project".
The most common layout puts the client first, because that is the name the reader recognizes, and the agency in brackets.

Mid level: One contract through a staffing agency at a well-known client (106 words)
Data Analyst (Contract) Pacific Mutual Insurance, via Brightstaff Technical Staffing, Phoenix, AZ March 2025 to February 2026, 12-month contract, completed
- Built claims dashboards in Power BI used by the regional claims managers each week - Automated the monthly fraud report, reducing the preparation time from two days to a few hours - Cleaned and documented the claims data tables so the permanent team could maintain them after the contract ended - Trained four analysts on the new dashboards before handover
Why it works: the client name carries the weight, the agency is honest, and "completed" answers the question of why it ended before anyone asks.
Contractor, freelancer or employee: label it correctly
The label matters, because a reference check calls whoever paid you. The IRS definition of an independent contractor is precise: "You are not an independent contractor if you perform services that can be controlled by an employer (what will be done and how it will be done)." So a person placed by an agency and paid on a W-2 is usually an agency employee on assignment, and a freelancer who invoices clients from their own business is an independent contractor.
On the resume, that turns into three simple patterns:
- Agency or consulting firm: Title (Contract), Client, via Agency.
- Your own business: Title, Your Business Name, then each client underneath.
- Directly on a fixed-term contract: Title (Fixed-term contract), Company.
If you were treated like an employee but paid as a contractor, the Department of Labor's misclassification page explains your rights: "Misclassification occurs when an employer treats a worker who is an employee under the FLSA as an independent contractor." On the resume, simply describe the work and say "contract" without arguing the legal point.
How to list multiple short contracts
When you have several short contracts doing similar work, group them under one heading so the reader sees one career, not a string of exits. Our guide to employment history on a resume covers grouping in more detail.

Senior: Independent consultant with several clients grouped under one business (115 words)
Independent IT Project Manager Meridian Project Services LLC, Denver, CO January 2022 to present
Selected engagements: - Rocky Mountain Health, 9 months: led the rollout of a new scheduling system to 14 clinics, delivered on the agreed date - Summit County Schools, 6 months: managed the migration of student records to a new platform before the school year started - Alpine Credit Union, 7 months: ran the vendor selection and contract for a new online banking platform - Front Range Logistics, 4 months: rescued a delayed warehouse system project and brought it to go-live
Why it works: one heading, one business and a clear thread. The reader sees four results instead of four short jobs.
The IRS self-employed tax center says you are generally self-employed if "You carry on a trade or business as a sole proprietor or an independent contractor". If that is you, list your business as the employer and the clients underneath, and keep invoices or contracts handy in case a new employer asks for proof of dates.
Temporary and agency work for entry-level jobs
Temp assignments are often how people get their first office or warehouse jobs. List the agency as the employer and the assignments underneath, with the most relevant first.

Entry level: Temp worker with several agency assignments (96 words)
Administrative Assistant (Temporary Assignments) Keystone Staffing, Columbus, OH June 2025 to present
- Ohio Valley Medical Group, 4 months: scheduled patient appointments and scanned records for two clinics - Brookfield Law Office, 2 months: covered the front desk during a parental leave, managing calls and client check-in - Central State Distributors, 6 weeks: entered purchase orders and supported the month-end inventory count
Asked back by Ohio Valley Medical Group for a second assignment.
Why it works: short assignments become one steady job with the agency, and the last line shows that clients wanted this person again.
Contract work in healthcare and other assignment-based jobs
Travel nurses, locum doctors, therapists and some trades work in short assignments by design. Readers in those fields expect it, so the goal is clarity: facility, unit, dates and what you handled.

Mid level: Travel nurse with three assignments (99 words)
Registered Nurse, Travel Assignments Horizon Travel Nursing, nationwide September 2024 to present
- St. Luke's Medical Center, Boise, ID, ICU, 13 weeks: cared for two patients per shift in a 24-bed medical ICU, including ventilated patients - Mercy Regional Hospital, Springfield, MO, ICU step-down, 13 weeks, extended once: oriented to a new charting system in the first week - Valley General Hospital, Fresno, CA, ICU, 13 weeks: floated to the cardiac ICU as needed
Why it works: each assignment shows the unit and the level of care, and "extended once" is the travel nurse version of a strong reference.
Contract-to-hire and contracts that became permanent
If a contract turned into a permanent job at the same company, show both, because the conversion is proof that you did well.

Mid level: Contract-to-hire role converted to permanent (82 words)
Marketing Coordinator Greenleaf Outdoor Gear, Portland, OR April 2024 to present Joined on a six-month contract through Cascade Creative Staffing; hired permanently in October 2024
- Run the email calendar and weekly newsletter for the company's customer list - Coordinate product launch campaigns with the design team and outside agencies - Report campaign results to the marketing director each month
Why it works: one entry, one line explaining the conversion, and no confusion about dates when the employer calls for a reference.
Common mistakes with contract work on a resume
- Leaving out "contract". The reader assumes the worst about short tenures.
- Hiding the agency. A background check will show it; list it in brackets.
- Listing every tiny gig. Group them, and keep the strongest three to five.
- No results. Contract roles are often project roles, so they are full of measurable outcomes.
- Gaps between contracts with no explanation. A line such as "between contracts, completed a certification" helps; our employment gaps guide covers more.
A chronological resume format suits most contractors, and our guide to the best resume format explains when a hybrid works better.
Frequently asked questions
How do you list contract work on a resume?
Like any other job: title, client company, the agency or your own business if one paid you, dates and location, then results in bullets. Add "Contract" next to the title or dates and, where useful, "contract completed". Group several short, similar contracts under one heading so they read as one career.
Does contract work look bad on a resume?
No, when it is labeled. Unlabeled short roles can look like job hopping, but clearly marked contracts show employers you are trusted with projects and deliver them. Results, extensions and conversions to permanent roles are strong signals. Many fields, such as IT, nursing and consulting, rely on contractors.
Should I put the agency or the client on my resume?
Both. Put the client first because the reader recognizes the name and the work happened there, then the agency, for example "Pacific Mutual Insurance, via Brightstaff Technical Staffing". The agency was usually your employer of record, so it is what a background or employment check will confirm.
How do I list freelance work for several clients?
Create one entry for your freelance business or "Independent Consultant", with the overall dates, then list your strongest clients underneath with a line on each project and its result. Leave out minor jobs. If confidentiality applies, describe the client by type, such as "a regional bank", instead of naming it.
How do I show a contract that became a permanent job?
Use one entry with the total dates, and add one line explaining that you joined on a contract through the agency and were hired permanently, with the month. It avoids two confusing entries for the same company and shows the employer valued your work enough to keep you.
