Server Certification on a Resume: 6 Worked Examples

Write the exact certificate name, the body that issued it, the certificate number and the date, and say which state permit sits alongside it. The trap is that server certification means two unrelated things: food and alcohol service certificates for restaurant work, and CompTIA Server+ for hardware and server administration. One page for both, checked in September 2026, with six complete resume lines covering a restaurant server, an alcohol seller, a beer specialist, a shift supervisor, an IT server technician, and a new hire whose course is booked. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Here is the line for hospitality. Copy the shape, not the details.

Four parts: certificate name, issuing body, certificate number, date. The number is the only part a manager can verify.

Two certifications share this name

Search results for server certification mix restaurants with data centers. Decide which one you mean before you write the line.

Write the full name once, then the short form. "Server certified" on its own tells a reader nothing, in either industry.

Where the line goes, section by section

Your situationWhere to put itWhy
Restaurant server, host, busserCertifications section under ExperienceIt is a hiring condition, not a differentiator
Bartender or anyone selling alcoholCertifications section, with the state permit numberThe permit is what the licensee is inspected on
Beer, wine or spirits focused roleCertifications section, plus one experience bulletThe exam content is the selling skill
Shift lead or kitchen managerCertifications section, with the proctored manager exam namedState rules often require a certified manager on site
Server administrator or field technicianCertifications section above Education, plus a skills lineRecruiters filter on the certification name
Course booked, not yet passedCertifications section, marked booked with the dateTexas gives new hires 30 days, so the date matters

Keep it out of the summary unless the advert names the certificate. One line in the right section does the same work.

Renewal: only write what the body publishes

Hospitality validity is set locally, not nationally. Texas DSHS states the rule the employer is inspected against: "Texas requires that many food service employees complete an accredited food handler training course within 30 days of getting a job." Check your own state or county rule for how long the card lasts, and write the issue date so the reader can work it out.

ServSafe publishes the deadlines that catch people out. On the ServSafe Alcohol page: "Unused courses are valid for one year from the date of purchase", and "ServSafe Alcohol courses must be completed in 90 days." So a bought-and-forgotten course is not a certificate.

Proctoring separates the two exam tiers. ServSafe states that "The ServSafe Food Handler online exam and the ServSafe Alcohol Primary Online Exam do not require a proctor", while the Manager certification "must be provided to you under the supervision of a registered ServSafe Proctor". Name the proctored one when you hold it. It is the harder credential and the resume should say so.

CompTIA renewals run on continuing education. Its page states that "some options automatically renew your certification, while others require you to submit proof of your activities", including "passing the newest version of your certification exam". Put your renewal date on the line, not just the year you first passed.

Notice what changes. The alcohol seller leads with the state permit, because the licensee is the one inspected. The technician pairs the certification ID with a score. The new hire writes the booking date, since Texas counts days from hire.

Mistakes that cost the shift

With the line fixed, build the page around it using our server resume guide, the skills section and how to make a resume. Bartenders should also read the bartender job description guide before writing the experience bullets.

Frequently asked questions

What is a server certification?

It is one of two things. In hospitality it is a food handler, alcohol server or beer service certificate, usually from ServSafe or a state commission, sometimes paired with a state permit. In IT it is CompTIA Server+, an exam on server hardware, storage and administration. Name the exact one you hold.

Are there qualifications to take the ServSafe Food Handler course and assessment?

No. ServSafe states that "The ServSafe Food Handler Course and Assessment do not have an official prerequisite" and that it "may be completed by any individual seeking knowledge of basic safe food handling procedures". That is why the certificate alone is weak on a resume without the certificate number and date.

Are there state-specific requirements for the ServSafe Alcohol Examinations?

Yes. ServSafe says that "Several states require that supplemental information and, in some cases, a state-specific quiz be administered during a responsible alcohol service class". Some states also run their own free program, as Indiana's Alcohol and Tobacco Commission does, and issue an employee permit number worth writing down.

Can I take a course and exam online or do I have to go to a location site?

Both exist. ServSafe states that the Food Handler online exam and the Alcohol Primary Online Exam "do not require a proctor", while the Manager certification must be taken under a registered proctor. Write which version you sat, because a proctored exam carries more weight with an inspector.

What is a Cicerone?

Cicerone is a beer service certification program whose first level is the Certified Beer Server. The exam has 60 multiple choice questions, a 30-minute limit and a 75 percent pass mark, and is listed at $79 (USD). On a resume, name the level and the year, then what you did with it.
