Technician skills split into four groups that hiring people read in order: diagnostics, planned maintenance, documentation and compliance, and the customer-facing part. The one that decides the shortlist is the certification named in the posting, because for refrigerants and vehicles it is a legal gate rather than a preference. Skill wording below is quoted from O*NET OnLine, the EPA Section 608 rules and CompTIA, fetched in September 2026. Twenty-four skills come first, each with the resume line it belongs in, then the certifications, sourced pay for four trades and the skills worth nothing. The 24 technician skills, each with its resume line
A skill in a list is a claim. A skill inside a sentence with a number is evidence. Each line below is written to be pasted straight into an experience bullet.
Diagnostics and repair, six skills with the line each belongs in (107 words)
1. Fault diagnosis. Diagnosed 400 residential no-heat calls a year with a 92 percent first-visit fix rate. 2. Reading schematics. Traced control faults from OEM wiring diagrams on 14 rooftop units without factory support. 3. Multimeter and clamp meter use. Measured amp draw and capacitor microfarads on every compressor call before quoting a part. 4. Component replacement. Replaced contactors, blower motors and igniters on site, carrying 38 common parts in the van. 5. Brazing and pipework. Brazed line sets on 60 split-system installs with nitrogen purge on every joint. 6. Vibration and bearing checks. Caught two failing pump bearings on route inspection, avoiding an unplanned line stop.
Planned maintenance, five skills with the line each belongs in (86 words)
1. PM schedule execution. Completed 1,100 planned maintenance tasks a year against a CMMS route with zero overdue. 2. CMMS use. Closed work orders in Maximo the same shift, including parts used and labor minutes. 3. Lubrication programs. Ran the grease route on 96 assets, cutting repeat bearing failures from nine to two a year. 4. Filter and belt changes. Standardized filter sizes across 40 air handlers, dropping stock lines from 11 to 4. 5. Calibration. Calibrated 22 pressure transmitters annually against a certified reference gauge.
Documentation and systems, four skills with the line each belongs in (70 words)
1. Job sheet accuracy. Wrote job sheets accepted by the client's audit with no returns across 18 months. 2. Asset records. Rebuilt the asset register for 310 items, adding model, serial and install date to each. 3. Parts and stock control. Cut van stock value by 3,400 dollars while raising first-visit fix by six points. 4. Handover discipline. Ran the written shift handover for a three-shift team of nine technicians.
Safety and compliance, five skills with the line each belongs in (86 words)
1. Lockout and tagout. Applied lockout on every electrical intervention across four years with no recordable incident. 2. Confined space entry. Held a current confined space ticket and acted as top man on 30 tank entries. 3. Working at height. Worked from scissor lift and boom lift with current aerial lift certification. 4. Refrigerant handling. Held EPA Section 608 Universal certification and logged every recovery cylinder by weight. 5. Risk assessment. Wrote the job hazard analysis for each call and stopped two jobs for unsafe access.
Customer-facing and judgement, four skills with the line each belongs in (70 words)
1. Explaining a fault plainly. Explained repair versus replace in writing so tenants could sign off the cost. 2. Time and route management. Ran an eight-call day across a 60 mile territory and kept a 96 percent on-time arrival. 3. Upsell without pressure. Quoted 140 service agreements, of which 41 converted, with no complaint recorded. 4. Working alone. Managed my own diary, parts ordering and invoicing as a one-technician territory.

Technical: fault diagnosis to component level, electrical single and three phase, hydraulics and pneumatics, brazing with nitrogen purge, bearing and belt replacement, vibration checks, PLC fault finding to input and output level.

The certifications that count as skills
For some technician work the certificate is the skill, because without it the employer cannot let you touch the equipment.
The EPA is direct about this: "Technicians are required to pass an EPA-approved test to earn Section 608 Technician Certification" and the agency also confirms that "Section 608 Technician Certification credentials do not expire", both on the Section 608 requirements page. The same page sets out the four types, from "For servicing small appliances (Type I)" through to "For servicing all types of equipment (Universal)". Write the type, not just the number.
For IT technician work, CompTIA names the exam precisely: "Exam series code: 220-1201 (Core 1)" with a "Passing score: A+ Core 1: 675 (on a scale of 900)" and "Recommended experience: 12 months of hands-on experience in an IT support specialist job role", on the A+ Core 1 page. Put the exam code on the resume where the posting names the certification.
What the occupational data says the job is
O*NET OnLine defines general maintenance and repair workers as people who "Perform work involving the skills of two or more maintenance or craft occupations to keep machines, mechanical equipment, or the structure of a" building in repair, on its maintenance and repair workers summary. That is the argument for breadth on the resume rather than a single trade.
The HVAC occupation is defined by the equipment instead. O*NET describes it as work to "Install or repair heating, central air conditioning, HVAC, or refrigeration systems", on the HVAC mechanics summary.

Every figure in that table is the O*NET "Median wages (2025)" line on the occupation page named in the same row. If a recruiter quotes you a different number, ask which source and which year.
How to prove a skill in one line
Four parts, in this order: the verb, the object, the volume, the outcome. "Diagnosed 400 no-heat calls a year with a 92 percent first-visit fix rate" carries all four in twelve words.

Skills that mean nothing on a technician resume
- "Hard working" and "team player". No employer can test either from a page.
- "Mechanically minded" with no equipment named after it.
- "Health and safety aware", which reads as the absence of a ticket.
- A software list with no version and no volume behind it.
- "Excellent customer service" on a resume with no on-time or complaint figure.
Tip: Read the posting and count how many of its named skills appear in your first six bullets. If it is fewer than three, the resume is answering a different job.
