Technician Resume: The Sections Every Technician Job Checks

A technician resume works when the person reading it can find four things fast: the certification or license the job requires, the tools and equipment you have actually used, how you keep work safe and documented, and what you finished, counted the way your work orders already count it. The one constraint is the job post itself: CareerOneStop, the U.S. Department of Labor's career site, warns that "Any variation from what’s written in the job posting may fail to be recognized as a qualification." Below is the layout that works for any technician job, checked in October 2026, five short complete examples from five technician families, and links to 39 technician resume pages by job. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

The word technician covers a person resetting passwords, a person running blood samples and a person hanging off a cell tower. Most technician resume advice is written for none of them. The resume underneath is the same shape for all three.

The five parts every technician resume needs

This is also the order a supervisor reads them in.

Here is that shape for an IT support technician, in plain text, because plain text survives an upload.

Example 1: IT support technician, mid-level

The certifications sit above the summary and every bullet names a system. O*NET's task list for computer user support specialists includes the line "Maintain records of daily data communication transactions, problems and remedial actions taken, or installation activities." If the job lists it, the resume should show it.

Certifications and licenses go near the top

For many technician jobs the certificate is the permission to touch the equipment, so it belongs where the reader looks first. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says HVAC workers who handle refrigerants "must be trained and certified in handling refrigerants", and it adds that "some states and localities require HVAC technicians to be licensed; check with your state and locality for more information." For automotive work the BLS is shorter: "Certification may be required." For clinical labs it says "Some states require technologists and technicians to be licensed. Employers may prefer to hire candidates who have certification."

Write each one as a single line with the issuing body and the number or level. A college certificate is coursework and goes under Education; a certification you passed an exam for goes under Certifications. Our technician certificate guide shows the exact line for NICET, EPA Section 608 and state programs.

Tools, equipment and safety

"Problem solving, teamwork, attention to detail" tells a supervisor nothing. Name the meter, the scan tool, the analyzer, the software. Show safety in a bullet, not an adjective: lockout and tagout, confined space entry, biohazard handling, working at height. The technician skills guide has 24 skills with the resume line each one belongs in.

Example 2: Medical laboratory technician, entry-level

Quality control is the heart of that resume because it is the heart of the job: O*NET lists "Perform quality control analyses to ensure accuracy of test results." among the core tasks for medical and clinical laboratory technicians.

Measurable work, without inventing numbers

Your work is already counted: tickets closed, work orders completed, vehicles serviced, units installed, preventive maintenance routes kept on schedule. Use the numbers your system or supervisor already tracks, and leave out anything you would not be able to show if asked. CareerOneStop says the same thing about AI-written resumes: a resume "Includes only true information about you."

If you have no count, describe the scope instead: the size of the building, the number of sites, the equipment brands, the shift you covered alone.

Example 3: HVAC service technician, experienced

A format that passes applicant tracking systems

Most technician applications pass through an applicant tracking system first. You do not need a special template; you need a boring file.

That last point is the CareerOneStop rule from the top of this page: "Use the exact terms in your resume." If the post says "preventive maintenance", do not write "PM work". More in our ATS-friendly resume guide.

Example 4: Automotive service technician, mid-level

O*NET puts the last step of the job in one task: "Test and adjust repaired systems to meet manufacturers' performance specifications." The road test bullet says that in shop language.

Field and telecom: show the travel, the tools and the paperwork

Field technicians are hired on trust, because nobody watches them work. Show the territory, the test equipment and the paperwork you close out on site. O*NET's task list for telecommunications equipment installers includes "Test circuits and components of malfunctioning telecommunications equipment to isolate sources of malfunctions, using test meters, circuit diagrams, polarity probes, and other hand tools."

Example 5: Field telecom technician, career changer

A career changer leads with the certification, then shows the habits that transfer: prints, safety, records. See our career change resume guide.

Frequently asked questions

What should a technician put on a resume?

Put your target job title, a certifications and licenses block, a short summary, experience bullets that name the equipment and the result, a tools list and your education. Use the exact words from the job post for titles, tools and certifications, because applicant tracking systems match terms.

How do I write a technician resume with no experience?

Lead with your certification or training program, then list the hands-on lab hours, clinical rotation, apprenticeship or school projects as experience, with the equipment you used. Add any job where you followed procedures, kept records or worked safely, because those habits transfer.

Should certifications go at the top of a technician resume?

Yes, when the job requires or prefers them. Put a Certifications block under your header or summary, one line each with the issuing body and number or level. Many technician jobs cannot hire you without the credential, so make it impossible to miss.

What is the best format for a technician resume?

A reverse chronological resume in one column, with standard headings, no tables or graphics, saved as .docx or a text-based PDF. CareerOneStop's advice is to "Keep the resume to 1-2 pages." Use plain bullets that start with what you did to which equipment.

What skills should a technician list on a resume?

List the hard skills the post names: diagnostic methods, equipment brands, test tools, ticketing or maintenance software, and safety procedures. Put the strongest ones in your experience bullets with a result, then repeat them in a short tools list. Leave out traits like "hard worker".
