Where to Put Internship on Resume: 6 Layout Examples

Put an internship in your Experience section, listed with your jobs in reverse chronological order, and give it the same format as a paid job: title, organization, city, dates and two to four bullets. The one exception is volume: with two or more internships, give them their own Internship Experience section above any unrelated work. Harvard's career office states the rule underneath: "List headings (such as Experience) in order of importance". Below are six complete resume layouts, tagged by level, showing where the internship goes in each situation. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
You spent ten weeks doing real work, and now the only question is whether it goes above or below the summer you spent scooping ice cream. It goes above.
Sample 1: one internship and part time jobs
The most common student resume has one internship and a couple of part time jobs. Put everything in one Experience section, newest first, and let the internship sit wherever its dates fall. If the internship is older than your current job but more relevant, move to Sample 2.

Sample 2: two or more internships get their own section
When the internships are the reason you are being hired, give them a heading of their own: Internship Experience or Relevant Experience. Put that section directly under Education and the part time work below it under Additional Experience. This is the order Harvard describes, headings by importance, and inside each heading the same guide says to "list information in reverse chronological order (most recent first)".

Sample 5: a career changer's internship
An internship after a career change goes in a Relevant Experience section above your older career, even if the older jobs were longer and better paid. MIT's career office puts it this way: "Remember: experience comes in many forms. In addition to jobs, internships, UROPS or leadership roles, consider including class projects, competitions or even personal projects." The reader of a career changer's resume wants the new field first.

Sample 6: an experienced professional with an old internship
After a few years of full time work, the internship moves down. Keep it in Experience as a single line, or drop it once you have five years or more in the field. Harvard's guide also says to "Avoid information gaps such as a missing summer", which is the one reason to keep an old internship that fills a gap.

How to format an internship entry
Penn State's library guide defines the document simply: "A resume is a one- or two-page summary of your education, skills, accomplishments, and experience." The internship is part of that experience, so format it like a job.
- Title. Use the title on your offer letter: Marketing Intern, Summer Analyst, Co-op. Do not upgrade it.
- Organization, city and dates. Month and year for both ends, or a season for short summer internships.
- Two to four bullets. Start with a verb and show what you produced: reports, posts, models, sessions, analyses.
- A number where you have one. Forty posts, 18 sessions, 12 clients. Leave it out if you would have to guess.
- No duty list. "Assisted the team with various tasks" is the line every reader skips.
When an internship can go under Education
Put an internship under Education only when it was a required part of the degree, such as a practicum, clinical rotation or student teaching, and you have other experience to fill the Experience section. Even then, give it a line with the site and dates. If it is your strongest experience, move it back to Experience, because readers look for work there first.
For the full layout of a student resume, the intern resume page has a complete sample, and the marketing intern resume shows one for a specific field. When you send it, the intern cover letter guide covers the letter, the resume objective examples cover the top two lines, and the two page resume guide explains when a second page is worth it.
Frequently asked questions
Where do you put internships on a resume?
In your Experience section, in reverse chronological order with your other jobs, formatted like a job: title, organization, city, dates and two to four bullets. If you have two or more internships, give them their own Internship Experience section under Education and above unrelated work.
Should internships go before or after work experience?
Before, if they are more relevant to the job you want. Create an Internship Experience or Relevant Experience heading and put it above Work Experience. If you have one internship and it fits the dates, keep it in a single Experience section, where it may already sit near the top.
Can I put an unpaid internship on my resume?
Yes, in the same place and format as a paid one. Do not write unpaid in the entry. Readers judge the work, not the pay, so describe what you produced, the hours a week if it was part time, and the tools you used.
Should I list a current internship on my resume?
Yes. Put it at the top of Experience with the start date and "to present" or an expected end date, and write the bullets in the present tense. Only describe work you have already done, not tasks you expect to do before the internship ends.
When should I take an internship off my resume?
When you have about five years of full time work in the same field, or when you need the space for newer results. Until then keep it as a single line under your first job. Keep it longer if it fills a gap or is your only experience in the field you want.
