How to write a banker resume

A banker resume is a sales document about a regulated job. The branch or market manager reading it wants two things at once: proof that you produce, and proof that you produce inside the rules. Production without compliance history is a risk hire, and compliance language without any production numbers reads like a teller applying above their level.

Which kind of banker you are needs to be obvious in the first line. A personal banker opening deposit accounts, a relationship banker managing a book of small business clients, a private banker serving high net worth households, a commercial banker underwriting credit and a mortgage banker running an origination pipeline all wear the same title in casual conversation and compete for entirely different jobs.

This guide covers how to structure a banker resume around a book of business, how to write production numbers that survive a reference check, where the licenses and registrations belong, and the questions bankers ask when they move between retail, business banking and wealth management.

Format: production visible early, licenses in their own block

One page is standard, two only once you carry a substantial commercial or private client book. Reverse-chronological, single column, and no dense graphics, because bank recruiting systems are usually strict parsers bolted to a large applicant workflow.

Give registrations and licenses a dedicated block near the top rather than mentioning them in passing. Securities registrations through FINRA, a state insurance producer license, and the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System number for mortgage origination are pass or fail screens at many institutions, and a recruiter should not have to search the page for them.

Summary: segment, book, and what you grew

Name the client segment, the size of the book you carried, the products you sold, and one production fact. A banker who serves small business clients with deposit, treasury management and lending needs should say exactly that, because the hiring manager is filling a seat with a defined client base and wants to know whose relationships you can replicate.

Do not write results driven and client focused. Every applicant claims both, and neither survives contact with a manager who is looking at last quarter production reports while reading your resume.

Experience: the book, the pipeline, the retention

Open each role with the book: number of households or businesses, deposit and investment balances under your management, and the segment. Then write bullets covering the three things a banking manager measures: acquisition, deepening and retention. New relationships opened, referrals sent to and received from partners in mortgage, investments and business banking, product per household growth, and attrition in your book all belong here.

Show the credit side if you have it. Loan applications taken, consumer and small business credit structured, files submitted to underwriting with a clean approval rate, and how you handled a declined application with the client are what separates a banker from a salesperson with a bank badge.

Referral partnership is worth a bullet of its own. Retail banking runs on the handoff between the branch, the investment representative, the mortgage originator and the business banking officer, and a banker who can prove they fed that network is easy to place.

Compliance and risk: the paragraph most bankers skip

Put a line in each role on the control side of the job: customer identification and know your customer procedures, currency transaction reporting, suspicious activity referrals, adherence to sales practice policy, and clean audit or exam results in your branch. An examiner-ready banker is a hiring manager relief.

Fraud prevention experience belongs here too. Catching an attempted account takeover, holding a suspicious wire for verification or stopping an elder financial exploitation attempt is memorable, defensible and rarely on a competitor resume.

Systems, products and keywords

Name the core banking platform and the customer relationship management system, since both appear in postings: Fiserv, Jack Henry, FIS, nCino, Salesforce Financial Services Cloud, Encompass for mortgage. Then name the products, because product breadth is the real currency of a banking resume: checking and savings, certificates of deposit, treasury management, merchant services, consumer and small business lending, home equity, credit cards and referred investment and insurance products.

Mirror standard posting language once in the skills area and once in a bullet: client acquisition, relationship management, needs based conversation, cross referral, portfolio growth, deposit growth, loan origination, regulatory compliance and customer experience.

Banker resume summary examples

Personal banker, first year

Personal banker with 18 months in a high traffic branch, opening deposit accounts, taking consumer loan applications and referring clients to mortgage and investment partners. Consistently in the top third of the district for new checking relationships, and studying for the Securities Industry Essentials examination.

Relationship banker

Relationship banker carrying a book of 340 small business and affluent households with combined deposit balances above 60 million dollars. Grew the book 14% over two years through referral partnerships and annual financial reviews, and holds Series 6 and 63 registrations plus a state insurance producer license.

Branch or market manager

Branch manager leading a team of nine bankers and tellers across two locations, accountable for deposit growth, consumer lending production and audit results. Rebuilt the referral routine with mortgage and investment partners, and returned a branch with prior sales practice findings to a clean examination.

Work experience bullets: before and after

Before: Exceeded sales goals every quarter.

After: Finished above goal on checking, savings and consumer lending for six consecutive quarters, ranking third of 42 bankers in the district on new relationship production.

A ranking against a named peer group is checkable, while exceeded goals is the single most common unverifiable line in banking resumes.

Before: Managed a portfolio of clients.

After: Managed a book of 310 affluent households, completed annual financial reviews with the top 80, and held attrition below the branch average through two rate cycles.

Book size, the review routine and retention describe how the portfolio was managed rather than that it existed.

Before: Referred clients to other departments.

After: Sent 96 qualified referrals to mortgage, business banking and the investment representative in one year, of which 61 closed, and held a standing weekly partner huddle to track them.

Referral counts with a close rate and a named routine prove the partnership worked instead of being claimed.

Before: Followed all bank compliance policies.

After: Maintained clean know your customer files across the book through two internal audits, filed 11 suspicious activity referrals, and stopped a wire request that proved to be an attempted account takeover.

Compliance is only credible when it is specific, and an intercepted fraud attempt is the kind of detail a manager remembers.

Before: Helped small business customers with their banking needs.

After: Onboarded 45 small business relationships across treasury management, merchant services and lines of credit, structuring nine loan requests and getting seven through underwriting on first submission.

Product breadth plus credit outcomes shows commercial capability, not just account opening volume.

Banker resume questions

Which production numbers belong on a banker resume?

Book size, new relationships opened, deposit and loan balances you personally grew, referral counts and close rates, retention, and ranking within your district or region. Rankings and counts travel better than percentages of a goal nobody outside your bank can interpret.

Do I need FINRA registrations to be a relationship banker?

Many relationship and personal banker roles ask for the Securities Industry Essentials exam plus Series 6 and 63, or expect you to obtain them within a set window after hire. If you are unregistered, say you are eligible and willing to sit them promptly.

How do I move from teller to banker on paper?

Reframe the teller role around referrals, product conversations and accuracy. Referrals sent and closed, accounts opened, cash handling with no differences, and any time spent covering the platform desk show the manager you already do parts of the banker job.

Should a banker resume mention audits and examinations?

Yes, briefly and factually. A clean internal audit, a satisfactory examination in your branch, or a remediated finding you helped close tells a hiring manager you can produce without creating regulatory work for them later.

How do I show client relationships if I cannot name clients?

Describe the segment and the pattern instead: household count, average relationship size, industries for business clients, and the review routine you ran. Naming individual clients is a confidentiality problem and adds nothing a hiring manager can use.
