Careers With Certification: 7 Jobs and the Resume Line

Seven careers below are entered with a certification or a short postsecondary award rather than a four-year degree, and each one has a resume line that shows the credential a hiring manager can check. Every pay figure is the Bureau of Labor Statistics median for that occupation, with the year the BLS attached to it. The list comes first, then how to write the credential, then the questions people ask before they enrol, all checked in September 2026. Seven careers, the credential and the line

1. Pharmacy technician. BLS gives a 2024 median pay of $43,460 per year for pharmacy technicians, with typical entry-level education of a high school diploma or equivalent, and notes that "Some states and employers require pharmacy technicians to be certified."

2. Medical assistant. BLS reports a 2025 median of $45,690 per year for medical assistants and an outlook of 13 percent growth from 2025 to 2035, adding that "Although most states do not require it, employers may prefer or require that medical assistants be certified."

3. Phlebotomist. The 2024 median is $43,660 per year, and BLS describes the route: "Phlebotomists typically enter the occupation with a certificate from a postsecondary phlebotomy program, but some qualify with a high school diploma and on-the-job training", while "Many employers look for phlebotomists who have completed some kind of professional certification."

4. Surgical technologist. BLS puts the 2024 median for surgical assistants and technologists at $62,480 per year, with a certificate or associate's degree as the typical entry route. NBSTSA states that "Only a surgical technologist certified by NBSTSA can be called a CST® professional", and that its program "is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA)".

5. HVAC technician. The 2025 median for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers is $61,010 per year. BLS notes that the EPA "requires nearly all HVAC technicians to be certified in proper refrigerant handling", and that "some states and localities require HVAC technicians to be licensed".

6. Computer support specialist. BLS gives a 2024 median of $61,550 per year for computer support specialists and states that "candidates may qualify with a high school diploma plus relevant information technology (IT) certifications", while "Companies may require their computer support specialists to hold certifications in the products the companies use."

7. Heavy and tractor-trailer truck driver. BLS reports a 2025 median of $58,640 per year, and FMCSA sets the credential: "In order to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), an applicant must pass both skills and knowledge testing geared to these higher standards." Note who issues it: "FMCSA does not issue Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDLs). State governments are responsible for issuing CDLs."

How to write any of these credentials

Four parts, one line: the full credential name, the issuing body or state agency, the credential number, and the date. Add the renewal date when the body sets one and the endorsements when the licence carries them.

Split licences from certifications when you hold both, as the HVAC and pharmacy lines do. A state licence is permission to work, a certification is tested competence, and a hiring manager checks them in different places.

Then add one number from the work itself: draws completed, cases scrubbed, tickets closed, miles driven. The credential gets you read and the number gets you interviewed.

What the pay numbers do and do not say

Each figure above is a national median for the whole occupation, taken from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook with the year BLS published against it. A median is not a starting salary, and the same job pays differently by state, shift and employer.

Outlook varies more than pay. BLS projects 13 percent growth for medical assistants from 2025 to 2035 and a 3 percent decline for computer support specialists from 2024 to 2034, on the same pages quoted above. Read the outlook line before you pay an exam fee.

Mistakes that waste the credential

• Naming the career and not the credential, which leaves a screener nothing to verify.
• Merging a state licence and a national certification into one line.
• Quoting a median wage in a cover letter as if it were an offer.
• Leaving clinical or road hours off an entry-level resume.
• Listing a lapsed CDL endorsement.
• Writing "certified" without the body that certified you.

What careers require certification?

Refrigerant handling requires EPA Section 608 by rule, and commercial driving requires a state-issued CDL. Elsewhere it is employer or state driven: BLS notes that some states and employers require pharmacy technicians to be certified, and that employers may require certification for medical assistants and computer support specialists.

Which certifications lead to a job fastest?

The short postsecondary awards. BLS says many pharmacy technician programs "award a certificate after 1 year or less", phlebotomy programs lead to a certificate with clinical laboratory work, and HVAC programs "generally last from 6 months to 2 years". Check the state rule before choosing, since some states add licensure.

Can a certificate replace a degree?

For these occupations, often yes. BLS lists a postsecondary nondegree award as the typical entry-level education for medical assistants, phlebotomists, surgical technologists, HVAC technicians and truck drivers, and a high school diploma for pharmacy technicians. Degrees matter later, for supervisory and specialist routes.

How much do certification careers pay?

BLS medians for the seven above run from $43,460 per year for pharmacy technicians in 2024 to $62,480 for surgical assistants and technologists in 2024. Those are national medians for whole occupations, not offers, and they move with state, shift pattern and employer.

How do I put a certification career change on a resume?

Put the certifications block above your experience, so the reader sees the new credential before the old job titles. Give the credential number and date, add the clinical, lab or road hours you logged while training, and keep one line of your previous work that shows transferable responsibility.
