How to Add CPR Certification to a Resume: 5 Examples

Open the resume you already have, find the block that lists your licences, and add one line there: course name as printed on the card, issuer, credential code, expiry date. If there is no such block, build one and place it where the job advert's requirements sit. What decides the position is the advert, not the trade: a home care advert screens on the certificate, an accounting advert does not care. Decide first: does this advert screen on it?

Three questions, in order.

• Does the advert list first aid or CPR under requirements, or under desirable? If requirements, it goes high on page one. If desirable, it goes in the certifications block wherever that block already is.
• Does the setting legally need a trained responder? Read OSHA 1910.151(b): "In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid." Remote sites, rural care, plant, warehousing and outdoor work all fall under that.
• Is the card current? If it expired last year, add it with the real date and a booked renewal, or leave it off. A stale date on a resume is the thing a careful reader notices.

If the answer to all three is no, the certificate belongs in one short line at the very end of your skills block and nowhere else.

Name the course the way your card names it

There is no national CPR licence in the US, and OSHA says outright that it does not issue one: "OSHA does not teach first-aid courses or certify first-aid training courses for instructors or trainees." The name on your card comes from whoever trained you.

Swapping one of these for another is a small lie that a hiring nurse spots instantly. Write what is printed.

Add the code, because the code is checkable

The reason to type sixteen extra characters is that both issuers built lookup tools for employers. The American Red Cross describes its digital certificate like this: "Each type of certification includes a unique ID and a QR code that shows you meet certain requirements and allows employers to easily confirm your certificate is valid."

The American Heart Association's card portal has an employer side that says "Verify AHA eCards" and asks the employer to "Enter up to 20 eCards codes to verify". If you have just finished a course and cannot find your card, the same page explains the lag: "Training Centers have up to 20 business days to issue eCards."

Take the expiry date straight off the card or the digital certificate. Do not calculate it, and do not write a validity period you half remember; the Red Cross itself tells holders to check the certificate has not expired before ordering a wallet card.

The expired example is the one people avoid writing. It performs better than silence, because the alternative is a screening question you cannot answer.

Where to read the rules yourself

Employer obligations are set out in OSHA standard 1910.151, and the reasoning behind workplace first aid programmes is in OSHA's Best Practices Guide: Fundamentals of a Workplace First-Aid Program. Six ways people get it wrong

• Adding three CPR courses from one training day as three separate credentials.
• Writing "First Aid & CPR (certified)" with no issuer and no year, which a reader has to take on trust.
• Placing it above a state licence or professional registration. Registration first, always.
• Adding a logo or a badge image. It breaks parsing and it looks like a template.
• Repeating the certificate in the summary, the skills list and the certifications block.
• Using a nickname for the course. "CPR Level C" is a Canadian designation, not an AHA or Red Cross course name.
