Licensed Practical Nurse Resume: 6 Examples in Canada

Write the protected title, the regulator, your registration number and the current registration year, in that order, near the top of the page. The catch is that the licensed practical nurse title is provincial, so the regulator changes when you cross a border. The Canadian Council for Practical Nurse Regulators describes its members as the bodies "responsible for the safety of the public through the regulation of Licensed/Registered Practical Nurses". Below are six complete resume lines, checked in September 2026, for a new graduate, a ward LPN, an operating room role, a move between provinces, a care aide moving up, and a community role. The exact line, Registration and Certification block, experienced LPN (42 words)
REGISTRATION AND CERTIFICATION
Licensed Practical Nurse, College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA). Registration 41928. Active, renewed for the year ending 30 November 2026. CPNRE passed March 2019, first attempt. Professional liability insurance in place. Basic Life Support, renewed 05/2026.
Four parts: title, regulator, number, current registration status with its date. The number is the part a manager can verify in a public registry before your interview.
What the regulator calls you depends on the province

The Ontario difference is not cosmetic. CCPNR puts it this way: "Many nurses from around the world have found rewarding careers in Canada as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or registered practical nurse (RPN) as called in Ontario." Trained in Ontario, applying in Alberta? Write both titles once, then use the local one.
Quebec ties the title to membership. Quebec.ca lists as a requirement: "Membership in the Ordre professionnel des infirmières et infirmiers auxiliaires du Québec (OIIAQ [Quebec Order of Licensed Practical Nurses]) to use the title of Licensed Practical Nurse." So the membership year belongs on the line, not in a covering note.
Name the right exam, because there are three
The CLHA states the Alberta requirement: "One of these requirements is the successful completion of the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE)." The same page records the split that confuses applicants: "in 2022, Ontario and British Columbia switched to an alternative registration exam, reducing the number of national writers for the CPNRE."
So write CPNRE if you sat the CPNRE, and your own regulator's exam if you sat it in Ontario or British Columbia. CNO words its requirement without naming a product: "You must successfully complete the registration examination approved by CNO for the category of nursing in which you want to register." The NCLEX-PN is a United States exam run by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. It does not belong on a Canadian LPN resume unless you also hold a US licence.
CNO lists a second exam that most candidates leave off: "You must successfully complete either the RN/RPN Jurisprudence Examination or the NP Jurisprudence Examination." Put it on the line. It is dated evidence that your Ontario registration is complete.

Renewal, insurance and the numbers a manager can check
Alberta publishes a hard deadline: "LPNs are required to complete Registration Renewal by November 30 to continue practicing in Alberta", on the CLHA renewal page, which also states that "Professional liability insurance is required every year in order to renew". Write the renewal year and the insurance in one clause and you have answered two screening questions.
The registry is public and live. CLHA calls it "The real-time Public Registry of LPNs and HCAs", which lets anyone "determine the current registration status" of an LPN or health care aide in Alberta.
CNO also requires currency: "You must show that you have experience practicing as a nurse within the past three years." Out of practice longer than that? Write the refresher or transition course you are booked on.

- Carried a 28-resident wing on days and nights as the only LPN on shift, holding CLHA registration 41928 and the advanced authorization for immunization. - Completed the Continuing Competence Program learning plan every year since 2019, with the 2025 plan audited by the college. - Precepted 11 practical nurse students from two approved programs and wrote their mid-placement evaluations.
Operating room LPN, Quebec, Registration block (47 words)

Registration: LPN, CLHA 41928, active to 30 November 2026. Class 5 driver's licence and own vehicle.
Notice what changes. The new graduate leads with the exam date, the only date a manager needs. The mover carries two registrations and an application reference. The community example puts the driver's licence next to the registration, because Quebec.ca lists it as a home care requirement.
Mistakes that cost the interview
- Writing "LPN" with no regulator and no number. It cannot be checked, so it counts as a claim.
- Naming the NCLEX-PN on a Canadian application when you sat the CPNRE.
- Using "Licensed Practical Nurse" in Ontario, where the protected title is Registered Practical Nurse.
- Leaving off the renewal date, which is the one fact a manager needs before scheduling you.
- Hiding a three-year gap in practice rather than naming the refresher course.

Frequently asked questions
How to become a licensed practical nurse in canada?
Complete a practical nursing program approved by your provincial regulator, pass the registration examination it approves, then register with the college. CNO also requires a jurisprudence examination, language proficiency, proof of status and a police criminal record check. Titles differ: Ontario registers you as a Registered Practical Nurse.
How long to become a practical nurse?
No regulator sets a national duration. Approved programs publish their own length and delivery options, and NorQuest College offers daytime, evening and rural blended routes to the same diploma. Add the registration examination and the college application after graduation, then the renewal cycle begins in your first year of practice.
How to become a licensed practical nurse online?
The theory can be online, the clinical hours cannot. NorQuest College states that "You will be required to complete your labs and clinical components in person at your designated lab location", alongside a full-time clinical practicum. Treat any fully online practical nursing credential as one your regulator will not accept.
How to become a licensed vocational nurse?
Licensed vocational nurse is a United States title, not a Canadian one. In Canada the regulated titles are licensed practical nurse and, in Ontario, registered practical nurse, according to CCPNR. To work in the United States you apply to that state's board of nursing and sit the NCLEX-PN, run by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
How to become a licensed nurse practitioner?
A nurse practitioner is a separate registration category, not a promotion from LPN. CNO registers Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses and Nurse Practitioners separately, and requires the NP Jurisprudence Examination for the NP category. The usual route runs through RN registration and graduate nursing education, not through practical nursing.
