Cleaning Skills for Resume: Lists and 5 Full Examples

The cleaning skills for a resume that get you hired are the specific ones: the floor machines you run, the chemicals you mix safely, the areas you cover in a shift and the standard you are checked against. The one constraint: a supervisor hiring cleaners checks reliability and safety before speed, so every skill you list should be one you could show on your first shift. O*NET describes janitors and cleaners as workers who "Keep buildings in clean and orderly condition." Below are the skills sorted into four groups, where each one goes on the page, and five complete examples tagged by level and setting. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
You have cleaned three office floors before anyone else arrived, every weekday, for two years, and the resume template wants you to write "attention to detail." Fine. But the person hiring you wants to know which floors, which machine and how many restrooms, and those words are free.
Entry level cleaner resume example with skills
A first cleaning job is hired on availability, reliability and a willingness to learn the chemicals. Put those first and add any cleaning you have done for a family business, a church or a school club.

That skills block is short on purpose. Six true items beat twenty you cannot back up when the supervisor walks you round on day one.
The four groups of cleaning skills
Cleaning postings ask for much the same work in different words. Sorting your skills into four groups makes them easy to match against the advert.
1. Floor and surface care. O*NET's task list includes "Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming." On a resume, name the method and the machine:
- Sweeping, damp and wet mopping
- Vacuuming with upright and backpack vacuums
- Auto scrubber and floor buffer operation
- Stripping, waxing and burnishing hard floors
- Carpet extraction and spot cleaning
- High dusting, glass and window cleaning
2. Chemical handling and safety. Employers care about this group most because mistakes are costly. O*NET lists the task "Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures." The federal rules behind chemical labels are on the OSHA Hazard Communication page. Skills to name:
- Reading labels and safety data sheets
- Diluting and mixing cleaning solutions to the instructions
- Color coded cloths and mops to avoid cross contamination
- Disinfecting high touch surfaces
- Handling sharps containers and biohazard bags under site rules
- Wet floor signage and safe lifting
3. Housekeeping and room standards. For hotels, homes and care settings. O*NET's housekeeping profile includes "Clean rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, corridors, elevators, stairways, locker rooms, and other work areas so that health standards are met." Skills to name:
- Bed making and linen changes
- Room turnover to a checklist and time standard
- Restocking amenities, carts and supply closets
- Laundry: sorting, washing, folding
- Reporting maintenance issues and lost property
4. People and work skills. Cleaners often work alone or before opening, so trust is a skill. Name it with proof: keys and alarm codes held, a supervisor's sign off, guests or residents you dealt with, and a second language if you use it at work.

Where cleaning skills go on the page
Put six to eight cleaning skills in a short skills block under the summary. Then prove the strongest three in your experience bullets with a number: rooms, floors, buildings, square footage you were told, crew size. A skills list with no bullets behind it reads like a wish list.

Mistakes with cleaning skills on a resume
- Writing "cleaning" as a skill. Every applicant can say it; name the method and the machine.
- Leaving out chemical safety, the group a supervisor worries about most.
- Listing equipment you have only watched someone else use.
- Forgetting availability. Many cleaning shifts are early, late or weekends.
- Hiding trust. Keys, alarm codes and working alone are worth a line.
Frequently asked questions
What cleaning skills should I put on a resume?
List the methods and machines you use, such as mopping, vacuuming, auto scrubbers and carpet extraction, plus chemical safety skills like reading labels and diluting solutions. Add housekeeping standards, such as room turnover to a checklist, and work skills like holding keys. Pick six to eight that match the posting and prove three in your bullets.
How do I describe cleaning experience on a resume?
Start each bullet with the area and the amount: floors, rooms, restrooms or buildings per shift. Then add the method, the equipment and the standard you were checked against, such as a supervisor inspection or a client walk through. Close with anything you were trusted with, such as keys, alarm codes or training new staff.
What are good housekeeping skills for a resume?
Good housekeeping skills include bed making and linen changes, bathroom deep cleaning, room turnover to a checklist, restocking carts and amenities, laundry and reporting maintenance issues. Add the number of rooms you clean in a shift if your supervisor tracked it, and any language you use with guests.
Should a cleaner put chemical safety on a resume?
Yes. Reading labels and safety data sheets, mixing solutions to the instructions and using color coded cloths show a supervisor you will not damage surfaces or hurt yourself. Put two or three chemical safety skills in your skills block and mention any site training you completed in your experience bullets.
