Hiking Resume: 7 Examples for Guides, Trip Logs and Gaps
By CVBooster Team · Published · Updated

A hiking resume means one of two things. It is either a trip log, the list of hikes, peaks and nights out that a guide course or club leadership program asks for, or it is a normal resume for a paid outdoor job: hiking guide, wilderness guide, trip leader. This page has seven complete examples covering both, plus one for the person who walked from Georgia to Maine and now has to explain it to an office.
Nobody reads "Interests: hiking" and books an interview. A line that says you led 14 day hikes for groups of up to 10 with zero evacuations gets a call. Same hobby, different sentence.
Example 1: the hiking experience resume (trip log)
Guide training programs and mountaineering courses often ask for a skills resume that proves you have done the miles before they teach you to lead them. It is a table, not a story. Route, area, date, and the detail the program asks for, such as elevation gain or nights out.

What the programs actually ask for
The clearest public example is the application package for the Assistant Hiking Guide course in Thompson Rivers University's Canadian Mountain and Ski Guide program. It asks for two documents: a personal resume and a hiking skills resume. Per that package, the skills resume has to show 30 day hikes, 10 of them off-trail in alpine terrain with at least 700 meters of elevation gain or loss, plus 21 backpacking trip nights and trips that needed map and compass navigation. The same package warns: "Poorly organized applications or unformatted resumes jeopardize your acceptance as your background, skills and qualifications may not be clear and/or may compare unfavourably to other applications."
Other programs set other minimums, and they change. Read the current requirements of the course you apply to, then copy its categories as your headings. If it asks for alpine days, give it a column called alpine days. Do not make the reader search.
Example 2: mountaineering resume
A climbing or mountaineering course wants the same table with different columns: peak, route, grade, season, and whether you led or followed.

Entry level: Mountaineering resume for an alpine course (159 words)

| Mount Baker, Easton Glacier | Cascades, WA | Glaciated, roped team of 4 | Team member | 06/2025 |
| Sahale Peak, Quien Sabe Glacier | North Cascades, WA | Glaciated, 4th class summit block | Team member | 08/2025 |
| Mount Shuksan, Sulphide Glacier | North Cascades, WA | Glaciated | Co-lead | 07/2026 |
Skills: Crevasse rescue (Z-pulley, practiced on two field days), ice axe self-arrest, roped glacier travel, avalanche forecast reading. Turnarounds: Two, both for weather, both noted in my trip log with the reason. Training: Wilderness First Aid; avalanche awareness course, winter 2025.
Example 3: seasonal hiking guide, first paid season
For a job, the resume changes shape. Now the employer is the reader, and the employer wants to know if you can keep a group of strangers safe and happy for a day. O*NET's profile of recreation workers, the federal category for people who run group activities, camping included, describes the work as: "Organize and promote activities, such as arts and crafts, sports, games, music, dramatics, social recreation, camping, and hobbies, taking into account the needs and interests of individual members." The last part is the job. Write about the group, not just the mountain.

Example 6: student trip leader
College outdoor programs are where most guides start. Whitman College's career center shares a sample for outdoor leadership roles, and its trip leader bullets talk about the group and the logistics, not the scenery. Its advice on layout is simple: "Please remember to use consistent formatting throughout your resume." See the Whitman outdoor leadership examples.

Example 7: the thru-hike on an office resume
You took six months off and walked from Georgia to Maine. It is a gap on paper and a project in real life. List it as a project with dates, so nobody wonders.

Mid level: Thru-hike listed as a career break (86 words)
Career Break Thru-Hike, Appalachian Trail | March 2025 to Sept 2025 - Planned and self-funded a 6-month walk from Georgia to Maine; set and tracked a budget for food, gear and resupply - Organized 22 resupply points by mail and in town, with a written schedule shared with family - Adjusted the plan after a knee injury in month 2 without leaving the trail
Experience Operations Coordinator, Harbor Lane Logistics, Richmond, VA | Oct 2025 to present - Coordinate weekly delivery schedules for 40 routes
How to write each part
- Pick the right document. A course wants a trip log. An employer wants a resume. Some ask for both; send both.
- Copy their categories. If the program lists day hikes, alpine days and trip nights, use those as headings.
- Lead with the group. Number of guests, ages, length of trip, and what you decided when things changed.
- Put certifications where they can be seen. First aid level and expiry date, near the top for guide jobs. If you need help with the line, see how to add CPR certification to a resume.
- Use real dates. Month and year for every trip and job. Guiding is seasonal, so write "seasonal" instead of leaving a mystery gap.
For a city or museum role, the tour guide resume is closer. For summer camp work, see the camp counselor resume. For a parks job, see the park ranger resume.
When hiking is a hobby, not the job
On an office resume, hiking goes in interests only if you can say something specific about it. The single word hiking is filler. A line about finishing the Colorado Trail in sections over three summers says planning and persistence. Our guide to hobbies in a resume covers when interests help. For a long trip that left a gap, see employment gaps. For club roles, volunteer trail work and leadership outside a job, see the activity resume example.
Frequently asked questions
What is a hiking resume?
It is either a log of your hikes, climbs and nights out for a guide course or club leadership program, or a regular resume for a paid hiking or wilderness guide job. Check which one the application asks for.
What should a hiking experience resume include?
Route, area and date for every hike, plus the details the program asks for, such as elevation gain, off-trail days, nights camped, navigation and the hazards you managed.
How do I write a resume for a hiking guide job with no guiding experience?
Use camp counseling, college trip leading, volunteer trail work and your own trip log. Add a current first aid certification and write about the groups you have led, even small ones.
Should I put a thru-hike on my resume?
Yes, if it explains a gap or shows planning. List it as a project or career break with dates and two or three lines on budget, logistics and problems solved.
What certifications should a wilderness guide resume list?
List the first aid level the job asks for, often Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder, with its expiry date, plus CPR and any avalanche, swiftwater or climbing courses you hold.
