A healthcare resume objective is two sentences at the top of the page that name the role you want, the setting and the one thing you bring that a clinic or hospital can check. Below are six complete healthcare resumes with the objective written out, from a new CNA to a healthcare administrator, plus the formula behind them. Pick the closest role, keep the structure and swap in your own licence, setting and numbers.
An objective that says seeking a challenging position where I can grow has been sent to every hospital in the country, and the hospitals have stopped reading it. That is the correct reaction. Write the version they can verify.
Example 1: a new CNA with a fresh licence
Start here if your licence is new and your clinical hours came from training, not a job. The objective names the licence, the setting and the hours, because those are the things a long-term care facility screens for first.

What the sources agree on
The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET database describes what a registered nurse does in one sentence: "Assess patient health problems and needs, develop and implement nursing care plans, and maintain medical records." An objective that uses the same verbs (assess, monitor, document, administer) sounds like the job instead of sounding like a wish.
MIT's career office says in its resume guide that "when applying for a job you want to build a resume that targets a specific position or employer." That is the whole case for an objective: it is the one place where the target is stated in words.
Harvard's career services, in its resume and cover letter guide, says to "Tailor your resume to the type of position you're seeking." A healthcare employer filling a night shift on a dialysis unit is not looking for a generic caregiver, so say which unit and which shift pattern you want.

The formula under every objective
- Who you are. Licence or certificate first, then years of experience. Newly certified nursing assistant beats caring individual.
- What you want. The exact role and setting: skilled nursing facility, medical-surgical unit, cardiology clinic.
- Proof. One number the employer can check: clinical hours, patients per day, prescriptions per shift, budget.
- Stop. Two sentences, never three. If you need more space, the rest belongs in a summary, and our resume summary examples show how.
Not sure whether you need an objective at all? Our resume objective examples explain when an objective beats a summary. For role-specific wording see the CNA resume objective guide, the LPN resume objective guide and the nursing resume guide. If you want a full page to build from, the registered nurse resume and certified nursing assistant resume are ready to fill in.
What to cut from a healthcare objective
- Seeking a rewarding position. Every position is rewarding on paper. Name the unit instead.
- Passion and compassion as claims. Show compassion with a task: feeding, repositioning, calming a confused patient.
- Your needs. A role that offers growth is about you. Say what you bring.
- A licence you do not hold yet. Write that the NCLEX-RN is scheduled for March, never an implied licence.
- Numbers you cannot back up. Hours, patients and budgets get verified, in an interview or on a reference call.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good objective for a healthcare resume?
Two sentences: your licence or certificate, the role and setting you want, and one checkable number such as clinical hours or patients per day.
Should a healthcare resume have an objective or a summary?
An objective suits new graduates and career changers, because it states the target. If you have years of experience, a summary of results usually works better.
How do I write a healthcare objective with no experience?
Use clinical rotations, volunteering and training hours as your proof, name the licence you hold and say which setting you want.
How long should an objective be on a healthcare resume?
Two sentences, about 30 to 40 words. Anything longer starts to repeat the rest of the page.
Can I use the same objective for every healthcare job?
No. Change the role and setting each time. A pharmacy objective sent to a hospital ward reads as a mistake.
