Pharmacy Technician Job Description for Resume: 7 Examples

A pharmacy technician job description for a resume is the handful of bullet lines under each job title that say what you did, where, and how much of it. Below are seven complete experience entries you can copy, one for each common setting: retail, trainee, hospital, IV compounding, mail order, long-term care and lead technician. Change the numbers to your own, keep the shape.

Every pharmacy technician resume says "filled prescriptions." So does the pharmacy's sign. The lines that get a call say how many, in what system, and what you caught before the pharmacist had to.

Example 1: retail pharmacy technician

What the job actually covers, per the government

The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the core duties in its pharmacy technician profile. Among them: "Collect information needed to fill a prescription from patients or health professionals", "Measure amounts of medication for prescriptions" and "Accept payment for prescriptions and process insurance claims". It also sets the limit every resume line should respect: technicians work under the supervision of pharmacists, and a pharmacist must review each prescription before it is dispensed.

That last sentence matters for wording. You prepare, enter, count, compound and label. The pharmacist verifies and counsels. A line that says you dispensed medications to patients on your own reads as a scope problem to anyone in the field.

O*NET's pharmacy technician task list adds the data side: "Enter prescription information into computer databases." Most of a retail tech's day is in that sentence, so make it specific.

Example 2: pharmacy technician trainee

If your state lets you work as a trainee while you study for certification, list it like any job. Training is experience.

How to write your own lines

Certification and state rules

BLS states that "Most states regulate pharmacy technicians in some way," and that "Some states and employers require pharmacy technicians to be certified." The title differs by state: registered, licensed or certified technician. Use your state board's exact wording on the resume.

If you hold the national CPhT credential, list it with its status. PTCB states on its CPhT page that "PTCB CPhTs are required to renew their certification every 2 years to maintain their credential." A lapsed credential listed as current is the kind of thing a background check finds.

Where these lines go

The job description bullets go under each job in the experience section. Above them, put a two to three line summary. Frequently asked questions

What should a pharmacy technician put on a resume job description?

A few bullets per job: prescription volume, data entry and insurance work, counting and labeling, inventory, phones, and any compounding or cabinet work, each with a number where you have one.

How do I describe pharmacy technician duties without sounding like everyone else?

Add size and system. Prescriptions per shift, units or facilities served, the type of software or automation, and one thing you improved or caught.

Should I list my CPhT and state registration?

Yes. Put both on their own line with status and expiry, under the job or in a certifications section.

What if I am still a trainee?

List the trainee role as a job with what you do under supervision, and put your exam date and training program under education.

Can I say I dispensed medications?

Say you prepared, filled or processed prescriptions for pharmacist verification. That matches how the work is supervised and reads correctly to pharmacists.
