The best provided synonyms for a resume are delivered, supplied, equipped, supported, trained and advised, and the best of all is the exact thing you gave plus who got it. The one constraint: provided is a delivery verb with no content. The Cambridge Dictionary defines it as "to give something that is needed or wanted to someone", and a resume reader wants to know what was given and what it changed. Below are 25 alternatives in five groups, seven before and after lines from entry level to senior, and when provided is still the right word. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Bullets that start with provided often hide the best part of the job behind the weakest verb. Swap the verb and the thing you gave becomes visible.

One line, fixed before you read further

The common version says provided and then names a vague noun. A customer service representative, provided and nothing else.

Mid level: Customer service representative, support line, complete example, 46 words

Mid level: Customer service representative, support line (46 words)

Before - Provided customer service and provided information about products

After - Resolved about 40 customer chats and calls a day, and answered product questions with a 95% satisfaction rating - Wrote 12 help articles from repeat questions, which cut the same ticket by a third

The work is the same. The verbs now say what happened to the customer.

25 provided synonyms, grouped by what you mean

"Provided" covers five different actions. Choose the action, then the word.

Most "provided" lines are really one of these five. If you gave a document, say you wrote it. If you gave training, say you trained. If you gave a number, say what it was.

On this verb the Harvard resume guide asks for language "Written to express not impress". Provided does neither, because it names no action. The verbs below mostly express.

Each pair keeps the same facts. The delivery is turned into an outcome.

What MIT asks of a resume instead

MIT's career office says to "Start descriptions with a strong action verb like built, managed, developed, wrote, etc." in its resume guide. Its next line asks you to "Record accomplishments and contributions, not just responsibilities". Provided is a responsibility verb. Pick the action behind it.

Frequently asked questions

What can I say instead of provided on a resume?

Start the bullet with the verb that matches what you did: supplied, delivered, trained, advised, supported or secured. Then add who received it and a number. Provided training becomes: Trained 30 new nurses on infusion pumps over six months.

Is provided a weak word on a resume?

It is not wrong, it is vague. It says something was given and nothing about what changed. One use is harmless. A page of bullets that start with provided reads like a list of duties instead of results.

What is a stronger word than provided for customer service?

Resolved, supported, advised and guided all work. Resolved is the strongest when it comes with a figure, such as the share of tickets closed on the first contact.

How do I describe a service I provided without saying provided?

Name the service as the verb. Provided bookkeeping becomes delivered the books, provided training becomes trained, provided support becomes supported. Then add the people served, the volume and one result.
