The best well-rounded synonyms for a resume are versatile, adaptable, multi-skilled, all-around, cross-trained and broad, and the best of all is a short list of the different things you did. The one constraint: well-rounded is a verdict, and a resume should hold evidence. The Cambridge Dictionary defines it as "involving or having experience in a wide range of ideas or activities", so the proof is the range itself. Below are 25 alternatives in five groups, seven before and after lines from entry level to senior, and when well-rounded is still the right word. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

A well-rounded candidate is a person who can do several jobs reasonably well. The resume has to say which jobs.

The range is the same. The new version lets the reader see it.

25 well-rounded synonyms, grouped by what you mean

"Well-rounded" is used for five different things. Choose the meaning, then the word.

Most well-rounded lines are about the first or third group. If you can do several jobs, say versatile. If you know many areas, say generalist. If you only mean you are a nice person, say approachable.

Harvard's resume checklist asks that wording be "Written to express not impress". Well-rounded is an impress word. The alternatives below mostly express.

Each pair keeps the same facts. The claim is turned into a list of things done.

What MIT asks of a resume instead

MIT's career office says to "Describe your experiences with specificity and strong action verbs." in its resume guide. The guide continues: "Record accomplishments and contributions, not just responsibilities". Well-rounded is a general claim. Specifics are what the reader trusts.

Frequently asked questions

What can I say instead of well-rounded on a resume?

Say what you can do: versatile, cross-trained, adaptable or generalist. Then list two or three different things you did, with a number for each. The list is the proof of range.

Is well-rounded a good word for a resume?

It is not wrong, it is unproven. It states a conclusion with no facts. Use it once, in a summary, if the job ad does, and let the bullets show the range.

What is another word for a well-rounded candidate?

Versatile, adaptable, multi-skilled and all-around all work. Versatile suits someone who can do several jobs, and adaptable suits someone who fits many settings.

How do I show I am well-rounded without saying it?

Put different kinds of experience side by side: a job, a project, a volunteer role and a skill. Three different items with a result each show range better than any adjective.
