The best troubleshoot synonyms for a resume are diagnosed, resolved, debugged, repaired, restored and corrected, and the best of all is the fault, the fix and the time it took. The one constraint: troubleshoot covers three steps and names none of them. The Cambridge Dictionary defines it as "to find the cause of a product or system not working correctly", and a resume reader wants to know what broke, who it affected and how fast it was back. Below are 25 alternatives in five groups, seven before and after lines from entry level to senior, and when troubleshoot is still the right word. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Troubleshoot appears on nearly every technical resume. It tells the reader that you are a person who fixes things, and it never shows a single thing fixed.

One line, fixed before you read further

The common version states the skill and stops. A help desk technician, troubleshooting everything and proving nothing.

After - Diagnosed and resolved about 35 hardware and software tickets a day for 220 staff, and closed most on the first call - Restored a failed file server within four hours using the last night's backup, with no files lost

The skill is the same. The new version shows the fault, the fix and the speed.

25 troubleshoot synonyms, grouped by what you mean

"Troubleshoot" bundles several steps. Choose the step, then the word.

Most troubleshoot lines are really one of these. If you traced a fault, say diagnosed. If you fixed a bug, say debugged. If the fault never came back, say eliminated.

Read the Harvard resume guide and one line stands out: language "Written to express not impress". Troubleshoot is a skill label. The verbs below mostly express.

What MIT asks of a resume instead

MIT's career office says to "Describe your experiences with specificity and strong action verbs." in its resume guide. The office also wants you to "Record accomplishments and contributions, not just responsibilities". Troubleshoot is a duty. The repaired machine is the accomplishment.

Keep going with resume synonyms for the bigger picture, then strong synonym and excited synonym for single words.

Frequently asked questions

What can I say instead of troubleshoot on a resume?

Choose the verb for the step you did: diagnosed, resolved, debugged, repaired or restored. Then add the number of faults, the people affected and the time to fix. A line with all three needs no skill label.

Is troubleshooting a skill or a verb on a resume?

Both. In the skills section it is a fine one-word entry. In an experience bullet the verb is weak, because it only says you worked on problems and not which ones.

What is a stronger word than troubleshoot for IT?

Diagnosed, resolved, restored and debugged all work. Restored is the strongest when you can give a time, such as a server back within four hours.

How do I show troubleshooting skills without the word?

Describe one real fault from start to end: what broke, what you found, what you did and how long it took. One case beats a list of adjectives.
