A resume for nursing school is not a job application. It is a one or two page record that shows an admissions committee you have been near patients, can handle a hard workload and will finish the program. Below are six complete examples for different starting points, from a high school senior to a graduate applicant, checked in November 2026. Pick the one nearest to you and replace the details.
The committee is not looking for a nurse yet. It is looking for evidence that you know what the work is like and still want it. One hospital volunteer shift in a waiting room that you describe honestly is worth more than a paragraph about caring.
Example 1: a high school senior with volunteering and a part-time job
If you have never worked in healthcare, use what you have: volunteering, caregiving at home, a job where you handled people under stress.

What admissions offices say
The University at Buffalo School of Nursing answers the common questions in its resume FAQ for nursing school applicants. On length: "Most resumes should be one or two pages." On extra schools: "List only the institutions where you earned a degree, even if you attended additional schools during your nursing education." On shadowing: "Nursing admissions love to see that students have either shadowed a health care professional or helped with a research project."
On the objective or summary at the top, Buffalo says "Summary and objective statements are stylistic choices for applicants." Its page is about graduate nursing applications, so check your own program's rules. For a bachelor's program, skip the objective and let the education and healthcare sections lead.
Two general university guides apply as well. MIT's resume guide says "When applying for a job you want to build a resume that targets a specific position or employer." Substitute program for job. Harvard's guide to a strong resume says "Within headings, list information in reverse chronological order (most recent first)".

Frequently asked questions
What should a resume for nursing school include?
Education with GPA, healthcare experience with hours, work history, certifications and honors. Keep it to one or two pages.
Do I need healthcare experience to apply?
Not always, but programs like to see it. Volunteering, shadowing and caregiving count, and a real job that shows reliability helps too.
Should I put an objective on a nursing school resume?
Usually not. Your personal statement says why you want to be a nurse, so use the resume for facts.
How long should it be?
One page for most applicants, two for graduate applicants with several years of work.
Should I include a job that has nothing to do with nursing?
Yes if it shows responsibility, teamwork or dealing with people under pressure. Keep each entry to two or three bullets.
