Resume for Sports: 6 Athletic and Sports Job Resumes

A resume for sports does one of two jobs: it gets a college coach to watch your film, or it turns your athletic record into proof for an employer, and both work when they lead with facts a coach or hiring manager can check, such as position, level, stats, time commitment and results. The constraint is that the reader is different in each case, so a recruiting resume and a job resume should never be the same page. The Lewis & Clark College Career Center puts the job resume rule simply: "describe your athletic experience in the same way you would describe your campus involvement or work experience." Below are six complete sports resumes, from a high school recruit to a former professional athlete changing career, checked against O*NET and NACE guidance in October 2026. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Twenty hours a week of practice, film, travel and lifting, and the resume says "Member, varsity soccer". That is like describing a full-time job as "was in the building".

Athletic resume for college recruiting

A recruiting resume is a one-page fact sheet for a coach. Put the athletic profile first: sport, position, height and weight where it matters, graduation year, GPA and the link to your film. Coaches compare numbers, so give the ones your sport uses.

College athlete resume for a first job

Employers outside sports want to know what the hours taught you, which is also the core of any first job resume. The Lewis & Clark career center says to "Focus on your accomplishments" and list athletics "under Activities, Campus Involvement, Athletics, Relevant Experience, or Leadership Experience" on the page. Pick the heading that matches the job, then write bullets the way you would for a paid role.

Sports resume format

A sports resume format depends on the reader, though the base is the same chronological resume format every employer knows.

Employers say what they are looking for. NACE, the National Association of Colleges and Employers, defines teamwork as the ability to "Build and maintain collaborative relationships to work effectively toward common goals, while appreciating diverse viewpoints and shared responsibilities." Athletes have done exactly that for years. Write the bullet that proves it instead of using the word.

Sporting resume template

A sporting resume template should be plain: one column, bold headings, standard fonts, no team logos. The film link and stats do the work on a recruiting resume; numbers and results do it on a job resume. For coaches, our coach resume guide has six more complete examples. Role pages for the student athlete resume, the professional athlete resume and the sports coach resume carry role-specific skills and bullets. Frequently asked questions

How do I put sports on a resume?

List the team, level and dates like a job, under a heading such as Leadership Experience or Athletics. Add two to four bullets with what you did and the result: captaincy, hours a week, awards, a team project you led. Lewis & Clark's career center advises describing athletics exactly as you would describe work.

What should a sports resume include?

For recruiting: position, physical measurements your sport uses, graduation year, GPA, test scores, club and school teams, stats, awards, a highlight video link and coach references. For a job: education, experience, athletics with results, and skills. Both should fit on one page and be easy to scan.

Is a curriculum vitae for sport different from a resume?

In the US, a sports CV usually means the same thing as a sports resume, a one-page summary of your athletic and academic record. A longer academic CV is only for research and university faculty roles, such as a sport science professor. For coaching and athlete applications, a resume is what coaches expect.

Should athletes list stats on a resume?

On a recruiting resume, yes, because coaches compare numbers. On a job resume, keep only stats an employer understands, such as games started or awards, and spend the space on leadership, time commitment and results. A batting average means little to a hiring manager in finance.

What is a good sports resume format for a student athlete?

Reverse chronological, one page: contact details, education with GPA, then athletics and any work, internships or volunteering, then skills. Put the experience that best matches the job first. A student athlete applying in sports should lead with sports operations work; one applying elsewhere should lead with transferable results.
